Chapter 15 - Handmaiden

Heaven's POV

It was already morning, the day of my wedding.

I laid on my bed, looking at the ceiling. I couldn't even sleep at all last night. I kept thinking about my life and what Sophia had said to me. She was actually right, the Alphas hate me so much that they wouldn't mind seeing me dead.

Knock! knock!

The knock at the door made me flinch. There was no point in answering. They had locked me up, so... Whoever it is, had the key.

I heard the door click open and someone stepped in.

"Good morning, Miss Heaven"

I sat up and saw a girl standing by the door. She looked about a year or two younger than me. She had a nervous but sincere smile.

"I am your newly appointed handmaiden. My name is Becca," she said with a small curtsy.

I stared at her surprised and confused. Like, why would anyone appoint a handmaiden who me when they didn't even want me as their Luna.

Becca must have noticed my confusion because her smile softened. "The Alphas requested it. They thought you might need help from today, since you'll be crowed the Luna. I hope that's all right," She curtsied again.

I nodded slowly, as I smiled, processing what she just said. The Alphas had ordered this for me because they knew I would need help? It's weird, but I mean, I liked the thought of them caring.

I stood up and walked towards my drawer, took out the little notepad that Mrs. Higgins had given me years ago, I hadn't bothered to use it all this time because I felt like it wasn't necessary to share my thoughts with anyone since they didn't care. I just preferred not to talk at all. But right now, I felt like it was necessary to communicate with Becca.

"Are you new?" I wrote on the notepad.

Her face wasn't familiar. I knew almost everyone in this pack, and I haven't seen her around before.

Her eyes widened as she read my notes. "Oh, yes, Miss Heaven, I'm from a neighboring pack, and I arrived just yesterday. Beta Hayden appointed me."

I frowned immediately. The thought of her being appointed by Sofia's father didn't sit well with me, but it was his responsibility as the Beta of the pack to appoint new staffs besides Becca seemed genuine and even kind. kind even.

Then I nodded smiling softly. It didn't really matter, what mattered was that she wasn't from here. That meant she didn't witness my parents death and she hasn't seen me treated badly by my soon-to-be husbands.

I gestured to my throat and shook my head, hoping she would understand.

"Oh," Becca's eyes widened with realization. "I know you can't speak, Beta Hayden told me about it. I don't want you to be worried about everything, and I hope that you get your voice back," she said with concern and it was genuine.

"Thank you. And please just call me Heaven," I wrote

"I... I can't... I can't do that. I could get punished for it," she said terrified.

Hearing the fear in her voice made my heart ache. I had experienced it every day for the past six years.

"Call me heaven when it's just us," I wrote underlining the last part twice.

She hesitated but nodded. "Okay, heaven, shall we get you ready? Today is your wedding day."

I nodded. It was more like the worst day of my life rather than my wedding day. I dropped my notepad back into my drawer, since I wouldn't be needing it anymore.

" I will prepare the bath" Becca said

She went in and came out a few minutes after. "It's ready, Miss Heav… l mean, Heaven," she said with a smile. "Let me bath you."

I refused. I didn't want anybody seeing my scarred naked body, she would definitely freak out and it would be hard for me to explain how I got them.

I would have to tell her that I would always get punished by the quadruplets anytime I had done nothing and that my former best friend initiated most of the punishments.

"It's my duty, heaven. Please, let me bath you. I have to, please."

I nodded again and hurriedly went into the bathroom and locked the door. Then I came out minutes later with my robe on and my hair wet.

Becca rushed to my side and guided me to the dresser. I sat down in front of the mirror.

"Let me dry your hair. We don't want you catching a cold," she said drying my hair with a cloth.

"You have such beautiful features. Your green eyes compliment your red hair," she said gazing at me through the mirror and I gave her a small smile. She was really kind to me. My Father used to admire me too, he would call me beautiful every single day.

Suddenly, the door opened and Mrs. Higgins walked in. My eyes instantly lit up as I saw her.

She had a white gown on her hand, which appeared to be my wedding gown.

I ran to her and gave her a hug, a really tight one.

"I heard you tried to escape,"she whispered worried. "Were you really that scared of getting married that you wanted to run away even without having anywhere to go?"

I pulled away and saw sadness in her eyes. I nodded and tears began to fall down my face.

Mrs Higgins pulled me back for a hug. "I came as soon as I got back from the seamstress but you are locked in."

I know, I heard her yelling at the guards to let her in, but they refused.

"I'm sorry I wasn't here for you, Mrs. Higgins said hugging me. "Don't cry, dear, you'll be fine. All this will pass."

Although it didn't seem like anything would get better, I still felt safe in her arms.

She pulled away and looked over my shoulders.

"Oh, you've met your new handmaiden."

I wiped my tears and nodded.

"Yes, I was just about to get her ready," Becca said.

"Okay, Here you go," she said handing over the wedding gown to her.

Becca moved closer and took the gown.

"Go on, dear. You need to look really beautiful," Mrs. Higgins said smiling.

Becca lifted the dress from its covering, and she went still. "Wow, it's really beautiful."

It was honestly a beautiful dress. In fact, it looked almost like the exact gown that Sofia and I had once picked out when we were looking at wedding magazines. But now, it felt like a prisoners uniform.

Becca helped me put on the dress. She curled my red hair and put tiny white flowers in them. She applied little makeup to cover up my dark circles and puffy under-eye that I got from lack of sleep.

When she was done and she finally turned me towards the mirror I barely recognized myself, the girl staring back at me looked like a true bride, and I hated it, but I forced a smile for Becca's sake.

"This is going to be the most happiest day of your life," Becca said, squeezing my hand.

I could see that she was genuinely happy for me, but I didn't believe her. This was a sham marriage, not a real one.

"You look really beautiful," Mrs Higgins who had been waiting patiently said.

She walked close, sat to me, and held my hand. "Are you ready, heaven? It's about to start."

I actually wasn't ready, but I nodded anyways, because I didn't have a choice.

She brushed my hair back gently. "I know that this isn't what you want, but trust me, you're stronger than you think and you're going to survive this."

It's not true, I'm not strong enough. I'm just an ordinary wolfless mute who is on her way to exchange vows with men who hate her.
