Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38 — Sector Black

Darkness wasn't the absence of light.

It was pressure.

Aiden felt it the moment the door sealed behind him. The air thickened, heavy enough to sit on his shoulders. Every sound—his breathing, his footsteps—felt too loud.

The System flickered weakly.

[LOCATION CONFIRMED: SECTOR BLACK]

[ENVIRONMENTAL THREAT: HIGH]

[SYSTEM SUPPORT: LIMITED]

"Of course it is," Aiden muttered.

Dim red lights blinked on one by one, revealing a vast industrial maze—collapsed walkways, rusted platforms, deep shafts dropping into nothing. Old blood stained the floor. New blood layered over it.

This place wasn't a trial ground.

It was a dumping ground.

Aiden took three steps forward.

Something laughed.

Not human.

Not monster.

Broken.

"Fresh one," a voice croaked from the shadows. "Did they finally send food?"

Aiden stopped.

"Come out," he said. "Or don't. Either way, I'm moving."

Metal scraped.

A figure emerged—once human. Armor fused to skin. One arm replaced with a jagged mechanical limb sparking erratically. His rank tag flickered.

D-3

STATUS: FAILED

"Name's Rax," the man said, grinning with too many missing teeth. "I survived eight hours longer than the others."

Aiden's eyes narrowed. "Then you should run."

Rax laughed harder. "You don't get it, kid. We're locked in until one of us stops breathing."

The System chimed.

[NOTICE: PROVISIONAL FAILURE BEHAVIOR CONFIRMED]

[WARNING: ENTITY HOSTILE]

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"Yeah," he said. "I figured."

Rax lunged.

Fast.

Too fast for someone half-broken.

Aiden barely twisted aside as the mechanical arm slammed down, crushing concrete.

He countered with a knee to the ribs.

CRACK.

Rax didn't scream.

He smiled wider.

"Good," he rasped. "That's good."

Aiden felt it then.

The wrongness.

This man wasn't trying to win.

He was trying to feel.

Aiden drove an elbow into Rax's throat and stepped back.

"Don't do this," he said. "They already used you."

Rax coughed. Blood sprayed.

"Doesn't matter," he wheezed. "If I kill you… I exist again."

The mark on Aiden's chest burned.

[UNCONFIRMED INTERACTION DETECTED]

Rax charged again.

Aiden didn't retreat.

He stepped in and smashed his fist into the man's chest.

Not hard.

Precise.

The impact rattled Rax's core implant. Sparks erupted. The mechanical arm seized.

Rax froze.

"…Huh," he whispered. "That's new."

He collapsed.

Didn't move again.

The System hesitated.

[ENTITY NEUTRALIZED]

[KILL CONFIRMATION… PENDING]

Aiden stared down at the body.

"I didn't kill you," he said quietly. "They did."

A sound echoed above him.

Slow.

Heavy.

Another presence.

Then another.

Six left.

The System whispered:

[PROVISIONAL ENTITIES ACTIVE: 6]

[TIME REMAINING: 23:11:42]

Aiden rolled his shoulders, ignoring the pain.

"Alright," he murmured. "Let's survive."

From deep within Sector Black—

Something roared.

Not broken.

Not failed.

Hungry.

Aiden smiled grimly.

"…Yeah. I was hoping you'd show."
