The silence after the Warden left was heavier than the pressure it brought.
Aiden felt it settle on his shoulders.
Command.
Not power—responsibility.
The System flickered again, sharper now.
[SECTOR BLACK — COMMAND INTERFACE UNLOCKED]
[USER: AIDEN VALE]
[AUTHORITY LEVEL: TEMPORARY / CONDITIONAL]
[FAILURE CONDITION: TOTAL SECTOR LOSS]
Aiden exhaled slowly. "Yeah. No pressure."
Varek stayed kneeling, shaking.
"Stand," Aiden said.
The word wasn't loud.
But it carried.
Varek's body jerked—then obeyed.
He rose unsteadily, eyes full of fear and disbelief. "You… you don't know what you've taken on."
Aiden met his gaze coldly. "I know exactly what it costs."
He pointed at the unconscious provisionals. "Check them. Stabilize the ones still breathing."
Varek hesitated.
The System chimed.
[COMMAND CONFIRMED]
Varek moved instantly.
The silver-haired woman stared at Aiden, voice low. "You can… order the System?"
Aiden shook his head. "No. It just hates arguing with me."
He turned toward the shadows where the Warden had been.
"This sector's a graveyard," he said. "That ends now."
A new interface unfolded in his vision—maps, threat clusters, resource caches, sealed zones.
And something else.
A blinking red icon.
[CORE THREAT — LOCKED]
[ACCESS DENIED: COMMAND LEVEL INSUFFICIENT]
Aiden's jaw tightened.
"So there's still something worse."
Of course there was.
A scream echoed from deep in the sector.
Not human.
Not mechanical.
Old.
The map lit up.
[HOSTILE MOVEMENT — MULTIPLE]
[DIRECTION: CONVERGING]
The silver-haired woman swallowed. "They're coming because of you."
Aiden cracked his neck, pain flaring.
"Good," he said. "I'm done running."
He looked at her. "Name?"
"…Lyra."
"Lyra," Aiden said, already moving, "you're my second. Fire support and evacuation."
Her eyes widened. "Me?"
"You survived this long," he said. "That's enough."
She nodded. "Okay."
Aiden turned to Varek. "You wanted control. Earn redemption. Defense grid—improvise one."
Varek clenched his jaw. "…Yes."
The System chimed again, reluctant but obedient.
[SECTOR BLACK — DEFENSE STATE: ACTIVE]
[COMMANDER DIRECTIVE REGISTERED]
The lights dimmed.
Barriers rose from the floor—crude, imperfect, but real.
Aiden stood at the center of it all.
Bleeding. Exhausted. Still standing.
"Alright," he muttered. "Let's see what breaks first."
From every tunnel—
The enemies came.
And this time—
They came for the Commander.
