The first impact hit like a meteor.
The barrier screamed.
Not cracked—screamed.
Aiden felt it through his bones as the defense grid absorbed the blow, light warping, metal bending inward like it was afraid.
[DEFENSE INTEGRITY: 71%]
"Contacts!" Lyra shouted from the upper platform. "Three—no, five signatures! Fast!"
Aiden didn't look back. His eyes were on the tunnel.
It wasn't a tunnel anymore.
It was moving.
Flesh folded over steel. Veins pulsed along segmented plating. Whatever led the charge dragged its body forward on too many limbs, each step punching dents into the floor.
[HOSTILE CLASSIFICATION: UNKNOWN]
[THREAT RATING: BEYOND SECTOR STANDARD]
Aiden smiled thinly. "Figures."
The creature roared—and the System stuttered.
[WARNING—]
[WARNING—]
[DATA DESYNC DETECTED]
For half a second, every interface froze.
Time didn't.
The thing lunged.
Aiden moved on instinct—rolled as a claw passed where his head had been, the shockwave throwing him into a barrier wall.
Pain exploded up his spine.
[CRITICAL DAMAGE DETECTED]
[RESPONSE DELAY: 0.3s]
"System!" Aiden snapped.
No answer.
It blinked.
The monster smashed into the barrier again.
[DEFENSE INTEGRITY: 39%]
"Varek!" Aiden yelled. "Now!"
"I—I'm trying!" Varek screamed back, hands shaking over the console. "The grid's lagging—like something's eating the signal!"
Lyra fired.
Blue-white bolts tore into the creature's flank, burning holes straight through—but they closed.
Regenerated.
"Great," she muttered. "It heals."
Aiden pushed himself upright, blood dripping from his chin.
"Of course it does."
He focused inward—past the System prompts, past the noise.
Down to the pressure.
The thing inside him that the Warden had acknowledged.
The System flickered again.
[UNAUTHORIZED POWER SOURCE DETECTED]
[SYNC CONFLICT: USER / SYSTEM]
Aiden stepped forward.
The creature sensed it—hesitated.
Good.
Aiden raised his hand.
Not to fire.
To command.
"Stop."
Reality resisted.
The System screamed.
[OVERRIDE ATTEMPT—FAILED]
[OVERRIDE ATTEMPT—FAILED]
[OVERRIDE ATTEMPT—]
Everything went silent.
No warnings.
No prompts.
No maps.
Just Aiden—and the thing charging him.
For the first time since the System existed—
It went dark.
Lyra's voice came distant. "Aiden…? Your UI—"
Gone.
Aiden felt naked.
Then—
Something answered.
Not the System.
Not the Warden.
Something older.
Something that didn't need permission.
The world slowed.
The monster's roar stretched into a deep vibration.
Aiden stepped forward and punched.
Not with strength.
With authority.
The impact didn't shatter the creature.
It erased the space behind it.
The thing flew backward, folding in on itself, slamming into the tunnel wall hard enough to collapse it.
Dust roared outward.
Silence followed.
Then—
The System rebooted.
[RESTARTING…]
[ERROR LOG: DATA LOSS — UNRECOVERABLE]
Lyra stared at Aiden, pale. "What… did you just do?"
Aiden looked at his shaking hand.
"I think," he said slowly, "the System blinked."
And something else opened its eyes.
Deep beneath Sector Black—
Something noticed.
[CORE THREAT — STATUS: AWAKENING]
