Michael's POV
The question clawed at my mind relentlessly. Why choose me over her boyfriend? What could she possibly find appealing in a damaged, older man like myself?
I had nothing worthwhile to give her except suffering and disappointment. The last thing she needed after her previous relationship was more heartbreak.
I pulled on a pair of loose shorts from the dresser and grabbed my phone, calling Caroline to bring clean bedding.
Within minutes, Caroline appeared at the suite door. Her gaze immediately found the crimson stains on the sheets, and she shot me a curious glance. My jaw tightened as I stripped the bed roughly, pretending not to notice how she watched my every action.
I should have handled this before summoning her, but she would have discovered the evidence regardless. Since when did Caroline's opinion of my private affairs matter? I had never bothered with such concerns before, and I refused to start now.
