The workday had dragged on endlessly, stretching like a stubborn shadow that refused to lift. Since dawn, my attention had been consumed by phone conferences, all centered around that damned server malfunction. We managed to resolve it eventually, compensated the necessary parties, brought in the technical experts we needed, and for the moment, everything was stable. With any luck, there would be no midnight emergency calls. No sudden trips to the office. Just one quiet evening beside my beloved Allyson, free from the constant interruptions that kept pulling me away from her.
My fingers worked loose the collar button of my dress shirt as my footsteps carried me down the hallway toward our bedroom.
