As the sun dropped below the horizon and the city went dark, the Holy Grail War settled into an uneasy quiet.
It didn't last.
At the five-hour mark, the Masters' detection range expanded again — a timed mechanic Max had built in to prevent the endgame from stalling into a permanent standoff. The expanded range swept across the underground of Ryudou Temple and found two red dots sitting right on top of each other.
Lü Bu, standing on the TV tower with nothing particularly pressing to do, heard his Master's report and reached into the air.
"A Bu — three red dots converging near Ryudou Temple."
"Leave it to me," Lü Bu said. "They chose to huddle there. I'll crack the shell."
He pulled a handful of arrows from nothing and set them to the bowstring.
Regarding his Master: Lü Bu had no strong feelings one way or another about Little Cat's tactical decisions, which were generally sensible. What he did have strong feelings about was being stared at with that specific expression while she flexed his arm muscle and said nothing. As a man with ordinary heterosexual preferences, there was a limit to how long he could stand there and let that happen. Fortunately, she'd also handed over two Command Seals without much argument when he mentioned his magical energy was running low, so the arrangement had its merits.
He released the bowstring.
Several arrows became fiery streaks across the night sky, descending on Ryudou Temple hill with the unhurried confidence of someone who had already calculated the outcome.
The lament of the earth was considerable.
Ryudou Temple, which had already flooded once today, was now on fire.
[Chat]: ryudou temple is having the worst week
[Chat]: what's the lore reason Ryudou Temple is always the one that gets destroyed
[Lore_Answer]: it sits on the dragon pulse. most concentrated magical energy in the city. it's basically a target painted on a hill.
[Chat]: that explains so much
Lü Bu looked at the results, found them acceptable, and grabbed another handful of arrows. The magic arrow mechanics were different from historical arrows — less about material quality, more about energy expenditure. Tight-grouping sniper shots required more power to stabilize. A missile barrage like this needed less finesse: just push energy out at maximum force and let the instability do the work on arrival.
Another volley. Ryudou Temple erupted with light visible from across the city.
Underground, the peace of the assembly line was interrupted by the ceiling shaking.
Edison straightened up to his full lion-headed height and roared with the voice of a man whose property was being damaged.
"That Eastern Heroic Spirit is absolutely without manners! Ambushing! Attacking the President's mansion! Original Mechanical God-Soldier — ACTIVATE!"
Wei, covered in plaster dust from the ceiling collapse, raised his hand.
Thirty thousand robots surged up through the exits of Ryudou Temple.
[Chat]: he made thirty thousand. thirty thousand. I watched every one.
[Wei_Chat]: Wei, you are the Master. you give the orders. you don't take them.
[Also_Wei_Chat]: Wei, wake up. you've been brainwashed.
[Edison_Chat]: the two lightbulbs on Edison's shoulders just lit up like floodlights. he is personally announcing his location to the enemy Archer.
[Edison_Chat]: Edison, buddy.
The lightbulbs on Edison's shoulders were, admittedly, a choice. But before anyone could fully process this, the robots at the far ends of the formation opened their head panels — and hundreds of forward-facing lights shot into the sky, flooding the battlefield with brilliance that completely swallowed Edison's glow. Edison, with quiet satisfaction, stepped into the middle of the formation.
"Excellent work, Master. You're becoming a capable commander."
"Thank you for your guidance, sir."
"Think nothing of it. Now — I'll leave the battle to you. I need to return to production. We're still 70,000 units short."
[Chat]: 70,000 short. still 70,000 short.
[Chat]: Teacher Pu has one Command Seal left. Teacher Pu. THE COMMAND SEAL COMMANDS SERVANTS. USE IT.
[Teacher_Pu_Chat]: Teacher Pu is aware of this. Teacher Pu is keeping this information to himself for now.
Wei straightened up, accepted the Gatling gun from the nearest elite unit, and turned to face the battlefield with the energy of a man who had been tightening bolts for three hours and was very ready to do something else.
Then the robot formation in front of him parted.
Lü Bu walked through it.
Not through a gap. Through the robots themselves — sweeping them aside with one arm as he came forward, the ones that didn't move in time launching into the air and landing in pieces.
He was carrying the Fangtian Halberd now, not the bow. He'd switched configurations somewhere between the TV tower and here, arriving at melee range before anyone had processed the transition.
He stopped at the edge of the formation and looked at Wei.
"You didn't run. You came to me instead."
"If I don't get close," Wei said, "how am I supposed to kill all of you?"
Lü Bu's expression shifted — not anger, not quite. More like the specific appreciation a craftsman feels when someone hands him an interesting problem.
"Oh? You've got nerve. The only person who's talked to me like that before is the man who stood beside Lord Xuande."
[Chat]: he's comparing Wei to Zhang Fei
[Chat]: Wei. wei. that's either a compliment or a death sentence.
[Chat]: both. it's both.
