Max had not, in fact, implemented a bladder mechanic in Holy Grail War.

For reasons: one, it was unseemly. Two, if you triggered it in the VR environment, there was the practical question of what happened to the hardware.

Wei, standing in the crater Lü Bu had just put in the concrete, confirmed this was the case. The sensation had been entirely psychological. He was fine. Technically.

Edison's large hand caught him by the collar and hauled him backward just as Lü Bu's follow-up strike came down. The ground wailed. Another chasm. The mechanical soldiers that had been flanking Lü Bu's left side received a casual one-armed horizontal sweep that didn't even interrupt his forward momentum — and two hundred robots, each weighing several hundred pounds, went airborne like dandelion seeds.

[Chat]: no pants, no problem, Maverick and Dai just arrived on the rooftop

[Chat]: actually wait — NERO IS HERE

Brilliant fireworks bloomed in the dark sky.

Nero descended like a small meteor wrapped in Primordial Flame, sword aimed at the back of Lü Bu's head, moving at the speed that Emperor's Privilege and Agility A could produce together.

Lü Bu tilted his head.

The thrust passed the side of his mask by an inch.

His free hand came up and caught the front of Elizabeth's spear — Elizabeth had launched her Dragon God Dive at the same moment, the two attacks coordinated to deny him any clean dodge. He caught the spear. His entire musculature became visible under the strain, every fiber loaded simultaneously.

And then he flung Elizabeth like a throwing weapon — she left his hand at considerable speed and impacted a cluster of mechanical soldiers hard enough to scatter them.

[Chat]: HE USED ELIZABETH AS A PROJECTILE

[Chat]: THE COORDINATION WAS PERFECT AND HE USED HER AS A PROJECTILE ANYWAY

Nero saw this, widened her eyes, and accelerated. She was faster now, everything feeding into speed. Still not fast enough.

Lü Bu raised the halberd. She had no choice but to catch it on her sword — the ground under her feet cracked into a spider web pattern in all directions, the shockwave kicking debris outward. Her hands went numb to the elbow. Blood from both palms.

"Not bad," Lü Bu said. He sounded genuinely pleased. "You blocked forty percent of that. I'll need to be a bit more serious."

"Forty percent?!" Nero stared at her hands. "I can't feel my arms and that was FORTY PERCENT?!"

"Grit your teeth. Here comes the—"

"AHHHHH—"

Dragon's Breath E. Not a powerful attack — Elizabeth was fourteen, pre-crimes, carrying only the lowest grade of wyvern dragonification. The breath had sound waves and a beam component but limited raw damage. Under normal circumstances she wouldn't bother with it.

These were not normal circumstances. Her best friend was about to trigger a defeat cutscene.

The beam hit Lü Bu from the side while he was committed to the downswing. It was a distraction, not a killing blow. He acknowledged it as such: he backhanded the halberd shaft into Nero — who was already on her knees — and then turned and split the Dragon Breath beam clean in half with a forward chop.

The two halves swept past him and took out the upper floors of two buildings behind him.

[Chat]: he cut the dragon breath in half

[Chat]: he cut it. in half. with a halberd.

[Chat]: I want to go home.

The roar came from the side. Darius III arrived, both axes swinging horizontally at Lü Bu's waist — a strike with the weight of a man who had been reconstituted from bone and dead tissue and was not happy about it.

Lü Bu caught both axes on the halberd shaft.

The ground under his feet groaned. He slid backward. Sixty feet. The concrete beneath his heels carved two parallel trenches. Then he stopped.

He shifted the halberd from defense to horizontal grip, both hands. And returned the favor.

Darius crossed his axes in front of him. The impact made a sonic boom audible three blocks away. From the strain in Darius's stance — the arch in his back, the bend in his knees, the way the ground under him sank — it was clear who had the edge in raw strength.

Three Servants. One Archer-class Heroic Spirit who had transitioned to melee. And he was winning.

[Chat]: this is actually Three Heroes vs Lü Bu and Lü Bu is still winning

[Chat]: in the original story it was a draw with Liu Bei, Guan Yu, AND Zhang Fei combined. these three are not Liu Bei Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.

Behind the battle: Edison appeared at Maverick's shoulder.

He raised both hands in a gesture of non-aggression.

Maverick raised the submachine gun and the Command Seal on his right hand in one smooth motion.

"One wrong move," Maverick said, "and I summon Nero back. Your Archer dies first either way."

Edison smiled. He kept his hands up.

"Relax. I'm here to make a deal."
