Chapter 13: Clash of Shadows

The Hunters had anticipated her hesitation.

As Lina and Kael descended from the ridge toward the valley floor, cloaked figures emerged from the mist, encircling them with silent precision. More than thirty Hunters, weapons gleaming with dark energy, their eyes locked on the glowing pendant at Lina's chest.

"Stay close to me," Kael said, drawing his sword, its edge shimmering faintly. "They'll test you first."

Lina's hands glowed with silver light, tendrils wrapping around her fingers, ready. She could feel her mother's presence within the Rift—a calm, guiding force—urging her to trust herself.

The lead Hunter stepped forward, hooded and imposing. "So, the key finally awakens. We've been waiting a long time for this."

"You won't get the Rift," Lina said firmly. Her voice carried a confidence that surprised even her.

Without warning, the Hunters attacked. Blades and dark energy surged toward Lina, but she was ready. Her shield flared into existence, silver light radiating outward, deflecting the first wave. The impact made the ground shiver, but she held firm.

Kael engaged the Hunters beside her, moving like a shadow through the chaos. The scouts created openings, but it was Lina's power that commanded the battlefield. Tendrils of silver surged from her hands, binding and knocking Hunters aside, pushing them back without striking lethal blows.

Then the lead Hunter lunged directly at her. Lina's instincts took over. She felt the Rift's pulse through her pendant, her mother's voice guiding her movements. With a swift motion, Lina channeled her energy, wrapping it around the Hunter like a cage of light. The figure struggled but could not escape, the silver tendrils tightening with her intent.

"You… control it?" the Hunter hissed, eyes wide.

"I am it," Lina said, her voice steady. The pendant blazed, bathing the valley in silver.

The other Hunters faltered, their attacks wavering as Lina's power radiated outward. The air itself seemed to hum with energy. For the first time, the Hunters hesitated—uncertain, afraid of the very power they had chased for decades.

Kael shouted over the clash, "She's not just defending herself—they can't touch the Rift now!"

Lina felt a surge of exhilaration. The fear and doubt that had plagued her vanished, replaced by determination and clarity. Her mother's essence whispered, This is only the beginning, Lina. Stand tall.

The battle raged on, but for the first time, Lina knew she was no longer just running. She was leading.

The valley trembled beneath the glow of her awakening. And far above, the silver skies watched, waiting for what would come next.
