Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

As I settled into the comfort of my kitchen, the soft glow of the afternoon sun spilled through the window, creating a cozy ambiance that felt like a warm hug. "Jayla, how are you, girl?" Niqua's voice burst through my phone screen, instantly elevating my mood. "Good, you?" I replied, smiling at her familiar face. Just then, Makyla popped into view like an enthusiastic rabbit, her energy radiating through the pixels. "Hey, you loving it?" she chirped, her excitement contagious. I couldn't help but laugh, but my stomach growled, reminding me of my priorities. "Great, but you've got to let me eat first, okay, girls? Questions later after I eat!" I declared, trying to keep my tone playful. They rolled their eyes, the gesture exaggerated but full of affection, as they nodded in agreement. With that, I turned back to the kitchen, grateful for friends who made even the simplest moments feel like a celebration, but first, it was time to satisfy my hunger.

As I rummaged through the fridge, frustration bubbled inside me, and I couldn't help but mutter, "They may be rich, but they can't even manage a simple sandwich!" The cool air from the fridge seemed to mock my hunger, and with a huff, I slammed the door shut. Just as I turned around, a figure materialized beside me, causing my heart to race. "Fudge, you're seeing things, Jayla," he chuckled, his eyes dancing with mischief. "Is that how you Mexicans greet people? I'd better start working on my Spanish if I'm going to talk to you." His arrogance ignited a spark of anger within me, and I stormed off to my room, questioning who he thought he was to joke at my expense.

Jayla? Jayla? Girl, are you even here?" I felt a rush of annoyance as I realized my phone was still on while I was chatting with the girls. Pulling it out of my pocket, I braced myself for what was coming. As expected, they started bombarding me with questions, their excitement palpable.

"Girl, that guy is smoking hot!" Makayla exclaimed, her voice draped in her signature teasing tone. "I need him to be my man!" She said it with a playful flair, and I had to stifle a laugh.

"Honestly, for the first time, Makayla is right!" Niqua chimed in, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Jayla, if you don't want him, I could make him mine. I mean, he's your stepbrother, right? You can't!"

Before she could finish her thought, I had to step in and set the record straight. "First of all, he is not my stepbrother. He's my stepdad's worker," I clarified, rolling my eyes. "My stepdad treats him like a son, and ugh, it drives me crazy! He's so full of himself!"

As I glanced at my screen, I could see Makayla and Niqua staring at me, their expressions a mix of disbelief and amusement. Niqua was the first to break the silence, her words dripping with sass. "Bitch, do you want him, or if it's a no for you, I'm still down to take him?"

I shot her a look, my mind racing as I questioned her humanity. Could she be this oblivious? I shook my head, both bewildered and entertained by our playful banter. The familiar thrill of teenage drama was already brewing, and I couldn't help but get drawn into it all over again.

Sitting on my bed, I reflected on my conversation with Niqua and Makeyla, both of whom tugged at my heartstrings even as they drove me up the wall. "You're a pain in the ass, you know that, right?" I had teased, feeling a mix of annoyance and affection as they giggled about Miles. Their eyes shone with mischief, but behind that, I sensed the weight of their apology when Makeyla finally admitted, "We thought you were taken." She meant it, and in that moment, I decided to let go of the frustration that had been simmering inside me. "It's okay, I forgive you," I reassured her, wishing they could grasp how much I needed our friendship to stay intact. Niqua's promise to be honest with me warmed my heart; it felt like a pact, a reminder that we could weather any storm together. As I looked around my room, I reminded myself of who I was and who I wanted to be—I wouldn't let the drama consume me. I had my own life to focus on, dreams to chase, and most importantly, friends and my sister Layla, who believed in me. With a determined smile, I stood up, ready to face whatever came next, knowing that I'd remain true to myself no matter how chaotic life got.
