Chapter 4 - Awakening the Ancient Shield

Vizette was successfully discharged from the hospital and also claimed his new identity as a member of the Lovegood family.

This was the "family" that Luna had mentioned.

Luna lived in the village of Ottery St Catchpole, a semi-wizard community.

A so-called semi-wizard settlement was a place where wizards and Muggles lived together.

However, wizards needed to restrain themselves and try not to cast spells in front of Muggles to avoid violating the Statute of Secrecy.

Perhaps for this reason, Luna rarely went to Muggle villages; this home was her entire living space.

Even Luna wasn't entirely clear on the specifics of the Statute of Secrecy.

All she knew was that once she entered Hogwarts, she could get the relevant explanations from the courses on the history of magic.

In addition, Luna possessed a wealth of common knowledge about the magical world, which was exactly what Vizette needed.

Without a doubt, Vizette was a very good listener.

After spending these few days together, Luna had become completely open with him, sharing everything with him.

Luna's house was located in a black castle next to the village, shaped like a cylinder and resembling a rook in chess.

Outside the castle, there was a lush garden where all sorts of strange and magical plants grew.

This was Luna's important playground. She was like a butterfly fluttering about, collecting dew, loosening the soil, watering, and fertilizing in the garden, having a great time.

She had many playmates, but her favorite was an owl.

When Vizette first settled in, Luna introduced him to the owl, saying, "Her name is Diana, and she's a very good postman!"

"A postman? Do they deliver mail with owls in the magical world?"

Luna stroked the owl's fluffy feathers. "Yes, whether it's delivering letters or packages, you can ask Diana for help."

Using owls for communication and package delivery was common knowledge in the magical world, and it had a unique kind of romance that belonged to wizards.

Aside from the palm-sized owls, the most active creatures in the garden were gnomes.

Gnomes were small magical creatures that looked like potatoes with legs.

Luna had a good relationship with the gnomes. When she planted, the gnomes would crawl out of their holes and help dig the soil.

The gnome was only friendly to Luna, but his attitude towards Vizette was quite bad; he even bit Vizette's finger.

Luna carefully bandaged his wound and said lightly, "Dad said that the gnomes in the garden are a blessing."

"If you feel a talent emerge today, don't suppress it; it's a blessing from the gnomes!"

Vizette was just beginning to live in the magical world, while Luna had grown up in a wizarding family, and he chose to believe Luna.

He did feel that something was emerging—

In his mind, the second page of "The Wizarding Manual" had been turned, revealing new content.

Ancient Magic: Shield: Guided by meditation and hand gestures, gather ancient magical power and spread it into a magical barrier...

This was a spell that did not require the use of a wand.

Luna had once told him that wizards generally needed the help of a wand to cast spells.

To obtain the wand, Vizette would need an acceptance letter from Hogwarts.

Although Dumbledore had told him that he had to go to Hogwarts to study.

But almost half a month had passed, and the so-called admission notice had not yet appeared.

He was thrilled to be able to obtain magic from "The Witch's & Wizard's Guide to Combat," especially magic that didn't require a wand.

Vizette left the garden and went to a stream to practice the magic.

First, he needed to master the gestures that would be used.

The first movement was to put his hands together in prayer position. After several hand gestures resembling mudras, he opened his hands and touched his index fingers and thumbs together...

The spellcasting gestures weren't complicated, and after practicing them a few times, Vizette memorized them.

Practicing the gestures was only the first step; he also needed to guide ancient magical power and integrate it into the gestures.

This process was obviously much more difficult; every contact between the hands was a collision of forces.

The hands would separate as if they were repelling magnets, and the hand gestures required for casting spells would feel awkward.

"Is it because my power comes from the Obscurus? I'll try combining it with meditation!"

As a student, Vizette was good at thinking about and solving problems.

Entering the state of meditation, everything around became clear.

Even the process of guiding power became smoother.

As he completed the final gesture, ancient silver-blue magical power appeared, gathering into a sphere of light between his hands.

immediately...

The orb of light disappeared, and the power returned to Vizette's body.

According to The Wizarding Manual, once all the steps were completed, the power should spread out to form a magical barrier.

However, the power returned to his body, indicating that the magic had failed to be completed.

However, the appearance of the orb of light was already exciting enough to motivate him to continue practicing this magic.

After practicing over and over again, Vizette's hand gestures became very fluent, but he still couldn't complete the last step.

Whenever the ball of light gathered between the hands and was about to expand, the power returned to the body.

After practicing repeatedly, he felt that something was missing in his spellcasting...

"Vizette, are you practicing magic?" A light, airy voice came from the side.

Diana stood on Luna's shoulder, her eyes half-closed as if she were dozing off.

"It looks like magic that only wizards used to know. Can I see it again?"

"Of course, no problem!" Vizette maintained his meditation, his gestures and the flow of power flowing smoothly in one go.

However, at the last moment, the power still failed to transform into a barrier.

"Perhaps you lack a strong desire?" Luna tilted her head. "I once read an ancient notebook filled with wizards' insights on spellcasting."

"The wizard who left the notes mentioned that when a wizard casts a spell, he always needed to have a wish in order to make the magic docile, just like Diana."

"You actually have a notebook like that?" Vizette asked curiously. "Do you still have that notebook? Can I borrow it and take a look?"

"They're gone." Luna shook her head gently, her voice seeming to become a bit more solid. "Something happened, and a lot of the notes are gone."

"Something happened? Can't magic fix it?" Vizette knew of a spell called the Repairing Spell, which could even quickly repair a house.

Luna shook her head again. "It was a magical accident. My mother... a wonderful witch, she loved to experiment... a spell went wrong..."

"I was there at the time. The power that malfunctioning spell unleashed was very strong. My mother disappeared, and the notes disappeared too…"

Seeing Luna's expression, Vizette felt a pang in his heart and murmured, "I'm sorry... I didn't know..."

He only knew that Luna's mother was gone, but he never imagined that Luna had witnessed her mother's death.

"This is indeed a sad thing." Luna's voice became light and airy again.

"But I still have family... It's not like I'll never see my mother again; there will be other opportunities in the future, won't there?"

Vizette now understood why Luna mentioned her family so solemnly back in St. Mungo.

"Coo coo!"

The owl on Luna's shoulder woke up, flapped its wings, and screamed in alarm.

The calm stream stirred, churning up large sprays of water that splashed onto Vizette and Luna…
