Irina's POV

Rush hour traffic had me running late. By the time I arrived, most guests were already decked out in evening gowns and sharp suits, making me stick out like a sore thumb.

I wore the same black puffer jacket and faded jeans I'd thrown on that morning—nothing fancy. Sue followed behind in her white winter coat, looking just as out of place among all the formal wear.

From where I stood near the entrance, I could overhear conversations drifting through the crowd. Erik's voice carried as he spoke to someone nearby.

"This is exactly what you've earned, Linda," I heard Erik declare. I caught a glimpse of him giving Annie's arm an approving squeeze. "You've brought up one hell of a daughter. Just for my goddaughter Annie alone, I'd make damn sure you got this spot."

I watched Erik's face darken as he continued. "What a waste, though. That worthless girl cost us an invitation. Buck could've been here with us."
