Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: First Encounter with Survivors

"HK, no need to support me. You should enter combat alert status too. My hands hurt a bit, but I don't have any other injuries."

After sheathing the blade, Lux spoke calmly. He didn't want MDR to be attacked by zombies due to his own carelessness.

HK416 hesitated for a moment, then gripped her gun again.

Rat-a-tat-tat…

MDR's crisp gunfire echoed through the empty museum hall as a zombie wearing a security uniform dropped to the ground.

Lux followed behind MDR and exchanged a displayed artifact with the system.

At the same time, a routine system notification sounded in his mind.

[Ding. Fossilized Penis of a Dinosaur Value: 13,000 resource points]

"Holy crap, I'm rich!"

Hearing the system prompt, Lux's eyes practically turned into money symbols. This single fossil was basically a vaccine. Coming here had been the right choice. If he took a few more, he could upgrade the system and improve MDR and the others' living standards.

With MDR clearing the way and HK416 bringing up the rear, Lux quickly looted everything in the first-floor exhibition hall.

The automatic vending machine was smashed apart by HK416 with her rifle butt, and Lux stored the snacks and drinks inside into the system storage.

After clearing the zombies wandering the third-floor corridor, the three of them arrived at a door marked Director's Office.

Looking at the resource points soaring to 340,000, Lux felt his heart sink.

He had practically looted the entire museum like a bandit. If the museum director came down and saw that all the antiques were gone, suspicion was inevitable.

For a moment, Lux felt the urge to turn around and leave.

Without a doubt, opening the door and interacting with survivors was not a good thing.

"The gunfire stopped, and there are no zombie sounds anymore. It must be the police coming to save us. Hurry and move the barricade blocking the door!"

Heavy, chaotic noises came from inside the room.

A dark emotion rose in Lux's heart.

He motioned to MDR, who lightly hopped back to his side.

"What does the great Miss MDR need to do now?"

"Do your onboard control systems prevent you from attacking humans?"

"No such system exists. As long as you give the order, Commander, even humans would be easy for Miss MDR to deal with."

"Same here. Lux, why didn't you ask me?"

HK416 also looked over, asking with a hint of dissatisfaction.

"Huh? Because I know you can…"

"I see."

HK416 accepted the explanation.

"Why ask that question?"

Lux suddenly froze.

Had he… just been thinking about killing them to silence them?

In the worldview of the apocalypse… after personally killing zombies, it seemed that he himself had also become a little more despicable.

But if the museum director somehow survived in a place where law still existed and reported this incident, Lux might end up wanted…

"Commander, you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but rest assured, as long as you give the order, I can pull the trigger on anyone."

HK416 whispered into Lux's ear, her words carrying a faint fragrance.

"Sorry, I'll tell you later."

Lux shook his head, brushing away the dark thoughts that had arisen.

There were other options. He could leave some food for the director, pretend he knew nothing about the museum below, and perhaps the director wouldn't betray him for the favor. With a bit of luck, they might not even notice the disappearance of the museum's exhibits.

Thinking this through, Lux took a backpack from his storage space, tossed in some puffed snacks and drinks taken from the vending machine, along with a few buckets of instant noodles, and slung it onto his back.

Taking supplies directly from the storage and handing them over would be too suspicious—any fool could see something was off.

A few minutes later, the office door opened, revealing five people.

Three were middle-aged men around thirty. One wore a security uniform with a bloodstained baton at his waist.

Among the two women, one wore a standard pink OL outfit, looking about twenty-six or twenty-seven. Her meticulous makeup couldn't hide her pallor.

The other wore a low-cut tank top and a super short skirt, her legs wrapped in black stockings, exuding a seductive aura. Lux, still a virgin, couldn't help but glance at her figure.

His gaze quickly shifted to the man beside her.

A young man with a wolf tattoo on his arm and a chain wrapped around his waist stood next to the seductive woman. They seemed to be a couple.

But Lux sensed these two didn't fit the museum's atmosphere. A delinquent and a sexy girl coming here to admire antiques? No way—most likely they were survivors who had fled here.

All five looked pale and gaunt, clearly starved for some time.

"Miss, hello. I'm Bob, the head of security for this museum."

Bob, holding the baton, forced a smile and extended his hand toward the seemingly serious HK416.

"Stand still."

HK416 raised her gun and disengaged the safety, instantly causing all five to raise their hands.

"Has anyone been bitten or scratched by a zombie? If so, step back to the window. Noncompliance will result in immediate termination."

HK416 said coldly.

"P-please rest assured, Miss. No one here is injured. No one would dare leave such monsters in a room."

"Please lower your weapon. We'll remove our clothes for inspection."

Bob exhaled and stepped back to show he meant no harm.

"Hey, what kind of attitude is that? Aren't you the people from the government here to rescue us? Coming so late and checking us for injuries?"

"And only two women and a young kid came? How can you protect all five of us?"

The tattooed youth complained.

"Drake! Quiet! How can you speak to Miss like that!"

Startled, Bob stepped toward Drake, pulling him back with an apologetic smile.

"We are neither police nor rescue teams. Remember that—they are only my personal guards, and we have no obligation to protect you."

Lux coldly glanced at Drake, speaking calmly.
