Chapter 46: Otto Dismissed
Â
POV: Corwyn Darke
The raven arrived at sunset, bearing news that shifted the realm's political landscape.
I unrolled the message in my study, scanning contents that confirmed what I'd suspected might happen eventually. King Viserys, weary of the endless faction warfare his court had become, had dismissed Otto Hightower as Hand of the King.
[ 📜 POLITICAL UPDATE ]
[ EVENT: HAND OF THE KING CHANGED ]
[ DISMISSED: OTTO HIGHTOWER ]
[ APPOINTED: LORD LYONEL STRONG ]
[ REASON: FACTIONAL TENSIONS ]
[ IMPACT: SIGNIFICANT (GREEN FACTION WEAKENED) ]
Lyonel Strong. Master of Laws, known for honor and impartiality, father to Harwin Strong who... well. The man's reputation for fairness was genuine, his commitment to realm over faction documented across decades of service.
"A better Hand for lords who build things. Otto schemed for Hightower advancement. Lyonel will focus on actual governance."
"News, my lord?" Maester Harlan entered with the evening reports, noting my expression.
"Otto Hightower dismissed. Lyonel Strong appointed Hand."
Harlan's eyebrows rose. "That's... unexpected. Otto has survived political challenges before."
"The King grew tired of watching his family tear itself apart." I set down the message, considering implications. "Lyonel Strong is less dangerous to houses like ours. More interested in competent administration than factional positioning."
"Should we approach him?"
"Carefully. A congratulatory letter, professional tone, demonstrating what we can offer." I moved to my desk, pulling parchment and ink. "The Hand receives hundreds of messages from lords seeking favor. Ours needs to stand out through substance rather than flattery."
POV: Lord Lyonel Strong
The new Hand of the King sorted through correspondence with methodical patience.
Most messages followed predictable patterns—congratulations that masked requests for favor, protestations of loyalty that preceded demands for advancement, flowery language that concealed self-interested agendas. Lyonel had served at court long enough to read the subtext beneath noble rhetoric.
Lord Darke's letter was different.
My Lord Hand,
Congratulations on your appointment. The realm benefits from leadership that prioritizes competent governance over factional positioning.
I attach a summary of Crownlands economic conditions as observed from Duskhollow's position—harbor traffic patterns, trade flows, agricultural productivity, regional development. This information may prove useful in Crown planning. I offer it freely, with no request attached.
House Darke serves the realm through building prosperity. If the Hand's office ever requires regional perspective on Crownlands affairs, I am at your disposal.
Your servant, Lord Corwyn Darke of Duskhollow
Lyonel examined the attached report—detailed economic analysis, professionally organized, containing genuine insight rather than self-promotion. Harbor statistics, trade projections, infrastructure assessments. The kind of practical information that actually helped governance rather than merely demonstrating the sender's importance.
"Interesting," Lyonel murmured, setting the correspondence aside for follow-up. Lord Darke's reputation had reached him through various channels—the minor lord who'd transformed a dying domain into regional economic power. Young, capable, connected to the Velaryons through business partnership.
Black-aligned, almost certainly. But competent enough to be worth cultivating regardless.
POV: Corwyn Darke
Lyonel Strong's response arrived within the week—faster than standard noble correspondence warranted.
Lord Darke,
Your economic analysis was precisely what governance requires and rarely receives. Lords typically offer opinions disguised as facts; you offered facts without disguise.
The Crown would benefit from regular updates on Crownlands conditions. If you're willing to provide quarterly reports of the quality demonstrated, the Hand's office will ensure they receive appropriate attention.
Your reputation for practical competence appears well-earned.
Lyonel Strong Hand of the King
[ 👤 RELATIONSHIP UPDATE ]
[ LYONEL STRONG ]
[ INITIAL: NEUTRAL (20%) ]
[ CURRENT: FAVORABLE (40%) ]
[ STATUS: PROFESSIONAL RESPECT ]
[ NOTE: OPPORTUNITY FOR POSITIVE WORKING RELATIONSHIP ]
I read the response with satisfaction I rarely allowed myself to show. A Hand who valued competence over scheming—refreshing change from Otto's calculated manipulations. Lyonel Strong might not be an ally in the factional sense, but professional respect created its own advantages.
"The new Hand requests quarterly reports," I told Harlan during our evening review. "Economic assessments of Crownlands conditions."
"That's... unusual. Hands typically concern themselves with high politics, not regional economics."
"Lyonel Strong isn't a typical Hand. He governed his own lands competently before serving at court." I filed the correspondence carefully. "This creates an ongoing relationship—regular communication, demonstrated value, professional rapport. When the Dance comes, having the Hand's ear might matter considerably."
"If he's still Hand when it comes."
"If." The word carried weight. Otto Hightower lurked in shadows, his influence diminished but not eliminated. Queen Alicent remained his daughter, her children his grandchildren. The Green faction had lost a leader but not its cause. "But every month of good relations is a month of better positioning. We take what advantages we can."
POV: Maester Harlan
The strategic implications of the Hand's change occupied considerable discussion over the following weeks.
"Otto Hightower will return," Harlan predicted during one session. "He's too capable, too connected, too invested in Green succession to remain sidelined permanently."
"Almost certainly." Lord Corwyn examined political correspondence spread across his desk. "But his return requires either Lyonel failing dramatically or Viserys dying. Neither is imminent."
"You're confident about Viserys's health?"
"I'm confident about his stubbornness. He'll cling to life and peace as long as possible, refusing to acknowledge that both are slipping away." Lord Corwyn's voice carried certainty that Harlan had learned not to question. "Which gives us years of relatively stable governance under Lyonel. Years to build, to strengthen, to prepare."
"For what?"
"For everything that follows." The familiar deflection, delivered without elaboration. Lord Corwyn returned to his correspondence, ending the line of inquiry.
Harlan had served House Darke for four years now—long enough to recognize patterns in his lord's behavior. Lord Corwyn knew things he shouldn't know, predicted events with accuracy that defied conventional intelligence-gathering, planned for futures he couldn't possibly foresee through normal means.
"Whatever his sources, his judgments have been sound. Otto is dismissed, exactly as he implied might happen. The faction balance shifts, exactly as he predicted. Perhaps it's analysis. Perhaps it's something else entirely."
But such questions led nowhere productive. What mattered was that Lord Corwyn's guidance had transformed House Darke from obscurity to regional prominence. The source of that guidance was less important than its reliability.
"The quarterly report for Lord Strong," Harlan said, returning to practical matters. "When would you like it prepared?"
"Begin compilation immediately. I want it comprehensive but readable—economic data, trade patterns, agricultural projections, infrastructure developments. Show him what competent regional governance looks like."
