I stopped in the corridor, processing the cascade of information. The blueprint materialized in my consciousness—architectural specifications, material requirements, functional layouts. A research facility designed for serious scholarship, with specialized areas for different fields of study.
"Dragon Lore specialization. That's the key feature. Everything else is valuable, but understanding dragons—really understanding them—could change everything."
"Maester Harlan," I said to a passing servant. "Ask him to meet me in the library. Immediately."
POV: Maester Harlan
The library had grown considerably since Harlan's arrival.
What had been a modest collection of perhaps forty books—mostly practical texts on agriculture and governance—now filled multiple rooms with over five hundred volumes. Lord Corwyn had invested consistently in acquiring texts, purchasing collections from declining houses, commissioning copies of rare works, even corresponding with Oldtown factors who specialized in antiquarian materials.
"You wanted to see me, my lord?"
Lord Corwyn stood among the shelves, running his fingers along leather spines with an expression of unusual intensity. "I'm ready to build a proper research facility. Something beyond a library—a place where scholars can actually advance knowledge rather than merely preserve it."
"That's... ambitious. Research facilities of the type you're describing exist only at the Citadel and a few wealthy noble houses."
"Which is why we need one." Lord Corwyn turned from the books. "We have the resources. We have the collection to justify it. What we need are the right people."
"Scholars? The Citadel trains maesters, but they're assigned to houses rather than recruited."
"Not maesters. Independent scholars—men trained at Oldtown but pursuing research outside Citadel constraints. They exist, Harlan. Some find the Citadel's restrictions stifling. Others have research interests the Archmaesters consider inappropriate."

[ - VALYRIAN HISTORY ]
[ - DRAGON LORE ]
[ - GENERAL RESEARCH ]
[ RECRUITMENT APPROACH: BETTER PAY, ACADEMIC FREEDOM ]
[ BUDGET: 500 GOLD/YEAR (PER SCHOLAR) ]
"You want me to recruit them."
"You have Citadel connections. You know who might be dissatisfied with conventional academic paths." Lord Corwyn's voice carried conviction that made impossible things seem achievable. "Offer them what they can't find elsewhere: resources, freedom, and a patron who actually cares about their work."
POV: Scholar Aldric of Oldtown
The offer seemed too good to be true.
Aldric had spent fifteen years at the Citadel, pursuing research into Valyrian history that the Archmaesters considered impractical at best and dangerous at worst. His theories about dragon bonding, about the blood magic underlying Targaryen power, about the connections between Old Valyria's rise and the dragonlords' genetic manipulation—all dismissed as speculation unsuitable for serious scholarship.
"Lord Darke offers five hundred gold annually," Maester Harlan explained during their meeting in Oldtown. "Private quarters, access to his growing library, and complete freedom to pursue your research interests. In return, you share your findings with him and assist with his own inquiries."
"What inquiries?"
"Dragons, primarily. Lord Darke has developed... interest in understanding how the creatures function. Their biology, their bonding, their history." Harlan's expression revealed nothing. "He's a practical man, but he appreciates that theoretical knowledge often precedes practical application."
Aldric considered carefully. The Citadel had tolerated his research but never supported it. His quarters were cramped, his funding nonexistent, his colleagues dismissive. Here was a patron offering resources and respect for work that everyone else considered worthless.
"I'll want to bring my notes. My books."
"Of course."
"And I have colleagues—Septon Myles, who studies ancient religious practices, and Master Yorick, a generalist researcher of considerable skill. If Lord Darke values my work, he might value theirs."
"I'm authorized to recruit multiple scholars." Harlan produced additional contracts. "Lord Darke believes in building teams rather than relying on individuals."
"A minor Crownlands lord who understands research methodology. Strange times indeed."
"Very well." Aldric signed the contract. "When do we leave?"
POV: Corwyn Darke
The scholars arrived a month later, filling my keep with energy it had previously lacked.
Aldric of Oldtown was thin and intense, his eyes constantly searching for connections others missed. Septon Myles was older, calmer, his expertise in ancient religious practices providing context for magical traditions the Faith preferred to ignore. Master Yorick was youngest—barely thirty—but his generalist capabilities made him invaluable for synthesizing information across disciplines.
"Your library is impressive," Aldric admitted during our first formal meeting. "Several texts here I've only read references to. How did you acquire them?"
"Persistence and gold." I gestured for them to sit. "I didn't bring you here to preserve knowledge—I brought you to advance it. Specific questions need answers, and I believe you're capable of finding them."
"What questions?"
"Dragons." The word hung in the air. "How they bond. How they grow. What factors determine their size and temperament. What the Valyrians knew about breeding and hatching that we've forgotten."
[ 🎯 RESEARCH PRIORITIES ]
[ PRIMARY: DRAGON BONDING MECHANICS ]
[ SECONDARY: DRAGON GROWTH OPTIMIZATION ]
[ TERTIARY: HATCHING METHODOLOGY ]
[ BACKGROUND: BLOOD MAGIC CONNECTIONS ]
[ CLASSIFICATION: SENSITIVE (SCHOLAR ACCESS ONLY) ]
Aldric's expression shifted from curiosity to excitement. "You're pursuing what I've spent years theorizing about. The blood of the dragon, the bonding rituals, the—"
"Carefully." I held up a hand. "These topics are sensitive. The Citadel discourages research for reasons that are sometimes valid. We proceed methodically, document everything, and share nothing outside this room until I authorize it."
"Understood." Aldric exchanged glances with his colleagues. "My lord, if you're serious about this research, we could accomplish things the Citadel never attempted."
"That's what I'm counting on."
