Chapter 118 - Chapter 118: Blade Against the Dead

Chapter 118: Blade Against the Dead

"Are you confident you can face these things alone?"

Alice glanced at Jake, then quickly looked away.

This man possessed an inexplicable composure that made a strange thought pop into her head: what could he possibly do?

"No," Jake honestly shook his head. Hundreds of infected in a wide-open space might be manageable with his agility, but in this confined space, he wouldn't be so arrogant.

Even with a large difference in combat strength, the gap would eventually be closed as the numbers increased.

He told Kaplan to quickly modify the Red Queen's mainframe data, then shifted his position, preparing to take position.

Five hundred infected—it was impossible for one person to eliminate them all. Even if each one stood still while he struck them down, it would take quite a while.

Human bones were hard, and the infected required headshots to kill; his arm might ache from striking, and he might not even be able to kill them all.

Not to mention, with the Red Queen shut down, the Lickers that had been contained had also escaped.

If he could just hold out for thirty minutes, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Alice nodded without saying anything more. She didn't know what to say to a confident man who thought he could hold off these creatures for thirty minutes.

Stepping into the laser corridor, Jake stood before the control room, katana in his left hand, facing the surging infected with an air of unwavering resolve.

"Roar!"

An infected, leading the charge, lunged at Jake before the others.

With a whoosh, a black blade was drawn. He gripped the hilt with his right hand, his elbow snapping back, his wrist twisting!

A crescent-shaped arc of silver light flashed between the man and the infected.

The silver arc was fleeting, but the curve it formed resembled a crescent moon, striking the infected's neck.

The infected was still reaching out to grab Jake when suddenly it paused, a red line appearing on its neck.

The red line rapidly widened on the infected's neck.

Finally, due to the force, its head separated from its body along the red line.

The severed head tumbled through the air in a simple arc before crashing to the ground, rolling a considerable distance.

Even without its head, the body continued to move, propelled by the brief momentum.

Coagulated blood gushed from the severed neck.

Taking a step back to avoid the blood splattering on him, his right hand didn't stop; with a swift thrust of his blade, another approaching infected was stabbed directly between the eyes!

His movements were incredibly fast and fluid, as if rehearsed beforehand.

The next moment, the headless infected and another with a pierced skull went limp and collapsed to the ground.

However, this was only the beginning.

He casually flicked his blade, shaking off the blood.

Facing him was a horde of infected surging forward!

Dragging their feet, their faces mangled and rotting, and uncontrollable hoarse sounds emanating from their throats.

He'd been killing them so fast he hadn't even had a chance to properly observe what these infected, who had swept through countless horror scenarios, actually looked like.

Before, he'd only seen them on screen, which always made him feel a little disgusted and uneasy. Now, standing right in front of him, they looked less terrifying than expected.

He wasn't scared, but he felt a lot of revulsion.

"Hey!" Alice's warning suddenly came from behind. "Watch out!"

Jake, who was observing the infected in front of him, was startled to find that this group of slowly moving creatures had already reached him.

Their mouths were wide open, some with missing lips, revealing their gums.

They spewed foul breath, charging toward him!

He kicked out hard with his right foot, striking the nearest infected in the chest, stopping it from getting any closer.

His other hand moved in unison, the scabbard flashing like a black whip, striking an infected dressed in tattered clothes who tried to approach from the side!

The infected, struck, seemed stunned for a moment, swaying briefly.

Unbearable!

Enraged, this infected roared, sticking out its purplish-black tongue, raising its hands high, attempting to tear Jake apart!

Jake wasn't idle either. While attacking with his left hand, his right hand swiftly pressed the blade against the chest of a rapidly charging female infected.

To Alice and the others, it looked as if Jake had performed a difficult backward lean, arms and legs spread, right leg straight, only his left leg on the ground.

"Roar!"

Although blocked by Jake, the three infected simultaneously tried to push forward.

Suddenly, he exerted force with his left leg, leaping into the air.

Rotating 360 degrees from right to left around his body's axis!

His right foot, like a drill, kicked one infected over, sending it flying.

The katana pressed against the female infected's chest, due to Jake's rotation, sliced through her neck!

In an instant, he seemed to transform into a whirlwind of steel, spinning with the blade following!

After slicing through the female infected, the blade's momentum didn't diminish, slashing fiercely at the head of the infected that was tilting its head, trying to bite!

His body spun a full circle, and Jake landed firmly on his feet.

The two infected swayed twice, then collapsed to the ground with two thuds.

In Alice and the others' eyes, this series of attacks was incredibly fluid, flowing like water.

Gun-fu allows one person to fight dozens, so killing these infected, weaker than ordinary people, was naturally like cutting through butter.

The battle continued on Jake's side, and a few more seconds passed before several more infected staggered forward.

This was the terrifying aspect of the infected: kill one, and ten more will follow!

The infected were endless; unless one possessed the power to wipe out billions, no one could escape death in the face of such overwhelming numbers.

Jake seemed to realize that killing infected like this was too slow, and instead of defending the entrance to the laser corridor, he turned and charged toward the horde.

This action startled Rain, who quickly raised her gun and guarded the entrance.

"Don't shoot! They'll come if they hear the noise!" Jake's voice came from the distance. Hearing this, Rain had no choice but to put away her gun and draw her combat knife.

Charging into the horde of infected, facing over a dozen at once, Jake abruptly tossed aside the scabbard, gripped the hilt with both hands, and unleashed a flurry of strikes!

His steps were rapid; following the principles of gun-fu, this fighting technique allowed him to dodge most attacks.

The infected, though still human in appearance, relied on biting and scratching, so their repeated attempts never even touched Jake's clothes.

He moved as nimbly as water through rocks, dodging while simultaneously delivering a slash or two!

The katana, reflecting the lamplight, swung continuously, appearing as if he were wielding light itself.

The infected, resembling nightmares, lunged forward, only to be felled one by one by the silver-gleaming blade.

Alice, watching this scene, couldn't help but wonder: if this world truly was facing disaster because they shut down the Red Queen and unleashed this outbreak, would salvation appear?

She certainly didn't believe in miracles, but the appearance of Jake, this self-proclaimed Father, and the hellish scene before her made Alice subconsciously want to believe.
