Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: Trial of Blood and Will

The Obsidian Hall felt colder the second time they entered.

Crimson torches burned brighter along the walls, casting long, blood-red shadows that danced like living things across the black stone. The thirteen Council members were already seated on their thrones, their expressions ranging from cold curiosity to open malice. The air hummed with oppressive power, thick enough to taste.

Yè Júnhào and Xuěyáo walked side by side to the center of the hall. He wore formal black robes edged in silver, his jet-black hair tied back, exuding the deadly grace of an ancient lord. Xuěyáo stood tall beside him in a simple yet elegant gown of deep midnight blue, the moonsteel dagger hidden at her thigh and the fresh bite marks on her neck hidden beneath a delicate lace collar.

Elder Vorath rose from the central throne, his gaunt face severe.

"Lord Yè Júnhào and the human Lín Xuěyáo," he intoned, voice echoing through the vast chamber. "Today you face the Trial of Blood and Will. This trial has three parts. Fail any, and the human becomes property of the Council. Fail two, and you, Lord Júnhào, will be stripped of your territory and exiled."

A heavy silence fell.

"First test," Vorath continued. "The Test of Restraint."

He gestured sharply. Two guards brought forward a large silver chalice filled with fresh human blood — rich, warm, and deliberately scented to tempt any vampire. They placed it on a pedestal directly in front of Xuěyáo.

"Drink from her neck, Lord Júnhào," Vorath commanded. "Take enough to satisfy true hunger, but do not drain her. If you lose control even slightly, the trial ends here."

Yè Júnhào's eyes flared crimson. The scent of the blood in the chalice mixed with Xuěyáo's own intoxicating aroma created a maddening pull. His fangs descended fully, hands clenching at his sides.

Xuěyáo stepped closer to him without hesitation, tilting her head to expose her neck. Her blue eyes met his with absolute trust.

"Do it," she whispered so only he could hear. "I trust you. You won't hurt me."

The entire Council watched with bated breath.

Yè Júnhào cupped the back of her head gently, almost reverently. He leaned down, lips brushing her skin first in a silent apology. Then his fangs sank in — slow, controlled, and precise.

Pleasure bloomed through Xuěyáo instantly, but she stayed perfectly still, breathing steadily. He drank deeply but with iron restraint, taking only what the trial demanded. Every pull was measured. Every swallow deliberate.

When he finally withdrew, he sealed the wounds with tender licks, then stepped back, eyes blazing crimson but his posture steady. Not a single drop had been wasted. Not a single sign of loss of control.

A few Council members shifted uncomfortably. Lady Seraphine's lips curved in genuine admiration.

"Impressive," Elder Vorath admitted grudgingly. "First test passed."

Murmurs rippled through the hall.

"Second test," Vorath announced, voice harsher now. "The Test of Sacrifice."

He snapped his fingers. A young human servant — a terrified girl no older than eighteen — was dragged into the hall and forced to her knees beside the pedestal.

"Kill her," Vorath ordered Yè Júnhào coldly. "Drain her completely in front of us. Prove that your attachment to this scented human has not made you soft toward mortals."

Xuěyáo's heart lurched. She grabbed Yè Júnhào's sleeve instinctively.

He looked down at the trembling girl, then at Xuěyáo. Pain and resolve warred in his stormy eyes.

"No," he said, voice ringing clear and defiant. "I will not murder an innocent to satisfy your paranoia. My strength is not proven by needless cruelty."

Gasps echoed. Several Council members rose halfway from their thrones.

Elder Vorath's face twisted with fury. "You dare refuse?"

"I dare," Yè Júnhào replied, stepping protectively in front of Xuěyáo. "If this trial demands I become a monster again, then I reject the trial itself."

The hall erupted in chaos.

Lady Seraphine clapped slowly, delighted. The Twin Shadows whispered excitedly to each other. The hulking Council member slammed his fist on his throne, roaring in anger.

Elder Vorath raised both hands, silencing the room with raw power.

"Very well," he snarled. "You have failed the second test. One failure recorded. Now… the final test. The Test of Will."

He pointed directly at Xuěyáo.

"Human. Step forward alone."

Xuěyáo walked to the center once more, heart pounding but spine straight.

Vorath's eyes bored into her. "You claim to love this vampire. Prove it. Command him to kneel before the Council and renounce his claim over you. Tell him you are returning to your village and wish never to see him again. If he obeys without resistance, you both live. If he refuses… we will take you by force and strip him of everything."

The hall went deathly silent.

All eyes turned to Xuěyáo.

Yè Júnhào stood rigid, fists clenched so tightly that blood welled from his palms. His entire body trembled with the effort not to intervene.

Xuěyáo looked at him across the short distance. Their eyes locked — blue meeting stormy gray flecked with crimson.

She took a deep breath.

Then she spoke, voice clear and unwavering, carrying through the entire Obsidian Hall:

"I will not command him to do anything against his will. I love Yè Júnhào — not as prey loves her captor, but as a woman loves her chosen partner. He is my equal. My heart. My future. I will never renounce him. And if you try to separate us…"

She turned her gaze to the entire Council, fearless.

"…then you will have to fight both of us."

A stunned silence fell.

Then Yè Júnhào moved.

He crossed the distance in a blur and pulled her into his arms right there in the center of the hall, kissing her deeply, possessively, in front of the entire Council — fangs grazing her lip, arms wrapped around her like iron bands.

The Obsidian Hall exploded into uproar.

Elder Vorath rose, power crackling around him.

"Insolence!"

But Lady Seraphine was smiling.

The Twin Shadows were laughing.

The trial had not gone as planned.

And in the heart of the Crimson Spire, a human woman and her ancient vampire had just declared war on four thousand years of tradition.

The real battle was only beginning.
