Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: S-Class Mission

Kael Vane walked up to Makarov. "Master, can I go on that job now?"

Makarov waved his hand. "Fine, fine. Go, go!"

This kid was strong, but he was a stubborn one. He was definitely going to be another troublesome brat.

Just then, Mirajane spoke up. "Wait! Kael Vane, you're a new member and don't know the mission process. I'll have Elfman go with you."

"Elfman!" Mirajane waved to him.

"What is it, sis?" Elfman walked over when he heard his sister call.

"Elfman, Kael Vane is still new. He doesn't know how missions work. Please show him."

"No problem! Leave it to Elfman the Man!" Elfman beat his chest.

It was common in the guild for veteran members to guide new ones.

"My name is Elfman. Elfman the Man. I'll lead you on this mission."

"I'm Kael Vane. Please take care of me."

Even though Kael had seen the anime, he wasn't familiar with this world. There were many places he had never heard of. It was good to have a veteran with him.

"We shouldn't waste time. Let's get ready and leave in half an hour," Elfman said. He didn't drag his feet, which was something Kael liked.

"Sounds good!"

Elfman went home to get his bags. Kael waited in the guild. He had suddenly crossed into this world and had no luggage, so he had nothing to prepare.

Just then, Mirajane brought a large plate of food to Kael Vane.

"This... I didn't order anything."

Kael was actually starving, but he was broke and had no money to eat.

Mirajane winked and smiled. "Eat! It's on the house! You can't go to work on an empty stomach. And I'm not really paying for it. You won it when you beat Natsu."

Kael Vane looked at Mirajane as if she were an angel.

Beautiful! Kind! Thoughtful! It would be such a waste not to marry her!

Macao saw Kael's expression from the side. "Sigh! Another young man has fallen!"

Wakaba nodded. "It's normal. Our little Mira is just too cute."

Soon, Elfman returned to the guild. Kael Vane was full. It was the best meal he'd had in the half-month since he'd crossed over.

Kael and Elfman set off. On the road, Kael found that although Elfman was huge, he was actually a big talker. He told Kael a lot about the Fairy Tail members.

How Gray was a pervert who took off his clothes without realizing it.

How Natsu was a troublemaker who caused disasters on every job.

How Cana was a huge drunkard who started drinking at thirteen. Her record was ten barrels in one go, and she drank 30% of the guild's alcohol supply for the year.

How Loke was a playboy who had dated countless girlfriends.

Even the Master didn't escape Elfman's gossip. He said the Master was a lecherous old man who was always staring at the young girls' butts.

Kael found it all very interesting, and it made the characters feel much more real. The two of them quickly became friendly.

After a long day of travel, the two arrived at the mission location.

"Huh? What's going on?"

"This is a huge setup!"

The mission location was completely surrounded by the Magic Council's Rune Knights. The Rune Knights were mages whose main job was to arrest criminal mages. They were the Magic Council's official army.

Right now, the Rune Knights had the mansion locked down tight, letting no one near.

When the two tried to approach, they were stopped by the Rune Knights.

"Stop! Who are you two?!"

"We are mages from Fairy Tail. We're here for a mission."

"Fairy Tail..."

The Rune Knight captain saw the Fairy Tail guild marks on Elfman's neck and the back of Kael's hand, and he let them pass.

"Go on in."

The two followed the Rune Knights inside.

Soon, they met the client for the mission.

"Hello. I am the mayor of this city and the client for this mission, Kos. Let's get straight to the point."

Kos placed a letter on the coffee table.

Kael Vane picked it up. Words were written on the envelope:

"In three days, I will take your life! —Phantom Lord!"

"A threat letter?"

Kos nodded. "Yes! Phantom Lord has been causing trouble in this city. Many wealthy merchants have already been killed. The whole city is in a panic. Many citizens are afraid for their lives and have chosen to leave."

Elfman's eyes went wide. "What about the Rune Knights? Haven't they caught them?"

Kos shook his head, his face full of worry. "No. They come and go like ghosts. They move too fast. By the time the Rune Knights arrive, they are long gone."

"This letter arrived three days ago. That's why I posted the request to the guild."

Kael Vane frowned. "With so many Rune Knights outside, they wouldn't be stupid enough to just walk in, would they?"

Kos sighed. "Sigh! I would have thought so before. But I recently learned the identity of the one leading the group operating here. Now, I'm not so sure."

"The leader's identity? Who is he?" Elfman asked.

"A Spatial mage. The King of Assassins, Kamil."

"What?!" Elfman was shocked.

"Who?" Kael Vane had never heard the name, but the title sounded impressive.

"The King of Assassins, Kamil, is a famous Spatial mage. He was the top ace of the assassin guild, Slaughter Guild. Because his magic lets him move without a trace and he never fails a kill, they call him the King of Assassins. Later, the Magic Council sent a huge army to destroy the Slaughter Guild, and he vanished. I can't believe he resurfaced and is now leading Phantom Lord's elite team in this city!"

Elfman's face was serious. Kamil was a veteran mage and very dangerous.

"A guy like that is too dangerous. This isn't a 700,000 J job."

"700,000 J? Oh! That must be the old request! I have already raised the request to S-Class. The reward is 7,000,000 J!"

"S-Class?!"

"7,000,000 J?!"

Elfman was shocked it was an S-Class mission, but Kael Vane was focused on the 7,000,000 J.

Seven million!!

Kael Vane's eyes practically lit up with money signs.

"I'm sorry, a mission like this..."

Elfman immediately tried to refuse. S-Class missions were too dangerous. Only S-Class mages could take them. He had lost his sister forever on an S-Class mission. It was a pain he carried always.

"We'll take it!"

Before Elfman could finish, Kael Vane spoke up.

"Ehhhh?!"

Elfman's eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his head.
