Chapter 3 - Brewed storm

Brewed Storm

Lara Hunter got ready for the day, her movements efficient as she juggled getting herself presentable and grabbing her bags. She was a hustler, working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and today was no different. Her shift at "The Daily Grind", a small but cozy cafe in the heart of the city, was about to start.

As she arrived at the cafe, a colleague, Mina, pulled her aside, her expression worried. "Lara, you're in trouble. The boss is fuming, looking for you."

Lara's brow furrowed. "What's going on?"

Mina leaned in. "I don't know the details, but he said it's about you. Loan sharks came here yesterday, caused a big scene, and chased away customers. He's blaming you."

Lara's stomach dropped. Those loan sharks again. She quickly changed into her work clothes, her mind racing, but before she could even tie her apron, the boss's voice boomed from the back. "Lara Hunter, get in here. Now."

Lara took a deep breath and walked into the boss's office. Mr. Kofi, a man with a bald head and a thick mustache, was seated behind his desk, his face red with anger. As she entered, he slammed his hands on the table, pointing a finger at her. "You, Lara! What's going on with you and those loan sharks?"

Lara swallowed. "Sir, I—"

"Don't 'sir' me!" Mr. Kofi cut her off. "Those men came here yesterday, shouting and causing trouble. They were looking for you. Do you know what that does to my business? My customers ran away, scared out of their wits! I can't have this, Lara."

Lara tried again. "I understand, sir. I'm sorry—"

"Sorry?" Mr. Kofi's voice rose. "Sorry won't pay my bills. You are a big shot, Lara, with big problems. I run a small cafe. I can't have you bringing trouble here."

Lara's heart sank as Mr. Kofi's words hit home. "So, what's going to happen?"

Mr. Kofi leaned back, his expression cold. "I'm letting you go, Lara. Effective immediately. I can't risk my business with your... issues."

Lara felt like she'd been punched. Sacked. Just like that. "Okay, sir," she said, trying to keep her composure. "I'll collect my things."

As she turned to leave, Mr. Kofi added, "And Lara? Be careful. Those loan sharks are still out there. Don't bring them here again."

Lara nodded, though she knew he wasn't worried about his cafe anymore. She was on her own now. Unemployed, and the loan sharks were still after her.

She walked out of the office, her eyes stinging. Another job gone. What next?

Outside the cafe, the city bustled, oblivious to her turmoil. Lara took a deep breath. She had to think fast. The mysterious man's words came back to her – "I'm the one who can help you, Lara." Was it desperation talking, or a lifeline?

The address on the card in her waste bin seemed to burn in her mind. She had nowhere else to turn.

She didn't know what to do next?
