Chapter 12 - Chapter 12

As I was reading the same book for the umpteenth time, I felt really inspired but also embarrassed, because no matter how much I think about it, what I did yesterday was stupid. But at least it helped me make up my mind: during the time I have left in this hospital, I'm going to enjoy it.

Suddenly, I heard my door creak. When I turned around, I saw Léon peeking inside to check if I was there, and the moment he noticed my gaze, he quickly looked away, pretending he hadn't seen me. I let out a small laugh. He's really such a big kid.

I stood up and opened the door myself.

"Good morning," I said, since he clearly wasn't going to make the first move.

"Uh… good morning," he replied, surprised.

"Come in instead of standing there, you'll catch a cold," I said, tired but amused by this strange doctor. He really is comical.

"So~ What are we doing today?" he asked, sounding motivated, though he kept avoiding my eyes—probably because of yesterday…

"I'd like you to bring me some notebooks—three, preferably. And besides that, I want to go to the garden more often. And in a month, I want to go to an amusement park with you. That's all, I think," I said in a dull voice.

"That's a pretty busy schedule… Don't you want to rest here?" he asked, worried.

So he is worried about me?

"Who do you think I am? It's not going to kill me. Anyway, this is the time I have left here—I want to enjoy it," I said seriously.

"Yes, but…" he murmured, still worried.

"If you're that worried, then I'm personally requisitioning you to accompany me in all my activities," I said as my heart started pounding from the nonsense coming out of my mouth.

"Hmmm… If I refused, it would be because you might not keep up with my pace. But fine, I'm in," he said with a faint smile.

And then time flew by so quickly—first hours, then days, and finally months passed at incredible speed.

I spent most of those three months with him, Tom, Rose, and Arthur, his best friend.

I had a lot of fun. Léon is really a strange person—he spends his time making others laugh and acting like a clown, but he's also very knowledgeable and someone I love talking to. Tom is a kid who dreams a lot—he wants to become a doctor like Léon one day. I think he should admire someone better, but even I approve of his choice now. Rose is a gentle and absolutely adorable young woman—I feel like I can tell her anything and she'll always understand. And Arthur is a really great guy—I love him. He's tall and strong, but above all, he's an amazing friend.

I didn't know you could enjoy other people's company this much. Maybe I was too focused on wanting to leave a mark on history.

Anyway, the three months are almost over, and it was fun. I especially loved the time we played a boys‑vs‑girls volleyball match and we crushed them—the look on Léon's face was unforgettable. I also loved the day we replanted the garden—poor Tom fell into a hole, and Léon even decided to bury him a little to scare him. I loved the day we visited Arthur's family for his birthday. But Rose's wedding was the best—I especially loved the moment when Léon invited me to dance… It was a good moment.

Tomorrow is my last day at the hospital before going home, and I insisted on going to the amusement park with Léon and the others. I've almost finished preparing their gifts.

Who would have thought that all I needed was to live normally, surrounded by people I love, to achieve my goal…
