Jamie kept his eyes on the sky.
Like if he looked at Jett, the words would crawl back down his throat and hide.
"Mason was…." he exhaled slowly, searching for the right word. "Perfect, at first."
A humorless smile touched his lips. "Or maybe he wasn't. Maybe I just really wanted him to be."
Jett didn't interrupt, he just stared at the side of his face and listened quietly.
"He knew exactly what to say. Exactly how to look at me, he made me feel…. chosen." Jamie's fingers twisted in the grass. "Like I was special, like I was lucky he even noticed me."
His jaw tightened. "I thought that was love." He said softly and looked into Jett's eyes.
Jett could see the pain in them, the regret, but he didn't say anything. He just waited for Jamie to continue.
"A year in, things started to feel different. It was small things at first. He didn't like my friends, he said they were a bad influence. That they didn't understand me the way he did." Jamie swallowed.
