Jamie pushed through the glass doors of the faculty building and walked out slowly, his backpack hung off one shoulder. His steps were slow and careless. The usual calm he carried around campus was gone. He looked smaller somehow, folded in on himself.
Jett saw it immediately Jamie walked out.
He had been leaning against the hood of his car across the walkway, arms crossed, pretending to scroll through his phone while actually watching the entrance like a hawk. The moment Jamie appeared, Jett straightened.
Something in his chest tightened at the way Jamie walked.
"Jamie."
Jamie blinked, like he had just come back to his body, then looked up. He tried to smile but it didn't reach his eyes. "Hey."
Jett pushed off the car and walked toward him. "How was it?"
Jamie exhaled through his nose, he looked so defeated and tired. "Not good. Apparently I didn't follow the instructions given." He shifted the strap of his bag higher. "So I have to retake the course next semester."
