Chapter 24 - 023: Bulma and Videl

"Isn't that Young Miss Bulma from Capsule Corporation?"

The moment she saw Bulma, Videl recognized her.

Videl wasn't living under a rock.

Of course she knew a celebrity like Bulma.

Although Bulma was already in her forties, she took great care of herself and looked like a woman in her early thirties.

Videl took a deep breath and walked toward Bulma.

She greeted her. "Hello, Young Miss Bulma."

"Well, hello."

Bulma studied her carefully. After confirming she didn't know her, she asked, "Is something the matter?"

Videl answered honestly, "It's like this—Son Gohan told me to come here. Does he live here?"

"Gohan?" Bulma's eyes lit up. She looked Videl over again, her expression growing livelier.

"Yes, yes! You must be Gohan's girlfriend. Didn't expect the kid to hide it so well. Come inside."

Bulma enthusiastically took Videl's arm and pulled her into the house.

Stumbling along, Videl tried to explain, "Ah, Young Miss Bulma, I think you've misunderstood. I'm not Gohan's girlfriend. He promised to teach me martial arts, so I came to find him."

"I get it, I get it. And don't call me Young Miss Bulma. Gohan calls me Aunt, so you can too." Bulma chuckled and steered Videl onto the sofa.

"Wait here. I'll go get Gohan. He's probably Cultivating in the gravity room," Bulma said.

"O-okay." Videl was bewildered by her warmth.

Young Miss Bulma didn't seem as cold as the rumors said.

Not only not cold, but extremely warm.

Nothing like the stories.

Under Videl's gaze, Bulma hurried off, but returned after just over a minute.

She sat beside Videl. "Gohan was indeed Cultivating. I've told him you're here. He's taking a shower and should be out soon."

Videl sat ramrod-straight, hands braced on her knees.

Facing the legendary president of Capsule Corporation, she couldn't help feeling nervous.

After all, to an ordinary Earthling, Bulma's halo was enormous.

"Mm-hmm, I'll wait here," Videl said.

Bulma said, "Don't be so tense. I'm not some strict elder. Let's chat casually—treat me like a friend."

"Yes, Young Miss Bulma." Videl agreed, but remained stiff.

"Hey, I told you to call me Aunt like Gohan does. Why are you still saying that?" Bulma complained.

"Ah, o-okay, Aunt Bulma."

"Mm, that's better. Here, have some fruit."

"Thank you."

The two of them chatted on the sofa.

Bulma began singing Gohan's praises: "I watched Gohan grow up. Our families go way back—very close. That kid's been smart since he was little, learns everything fast, an outstanding boy. You could say he's Earth's number-one catch..."

"Mm-hmm." Videl's head buzzed; she felt like she was sitting on pins and needles.

Bulma continued, "Right, I haven't asked your name yet. What is it?"

Videl shot to her feet, body ramrod-straight, almost saluting.

"My name is Videl. I'm from East City, currently working at the East Capital Police Bureau, born in age 757, never dated—pleased to meet you, Aunt."

"Uh..." Bulma was stunned by the spiel.

Look how nervous the kid is.

Two seconds of silence.

Bulma finally said, "Sit, sit down. Don't stand while talking."

Videl sat back down.

"Didn't expect you to be a police officer. That's great. age 757—what a coincidence! Gohan was also born in age 757."

Videl hadn't realized they were the same age. "Really? That's amazing."

"Hey, so you two should talk more. Young people need to communicate to build feelings."

"..."

Just then, Son Gohan walked in wearing casual clothes.

"Videl, let's go."

He made a fist and jerked his thumb toward the door.

"Ah, okay." Videl quickly stood.

She said to Bulma, "Aunt Bulma, I'll head out. Let's chat again when we're free."

"Mm, off you go on your date." Bulma turned to Gohan. "Gohan, don't bully her."

"Got it," Gohan replied helplessly.

Videl followed Gohan, cheeks slightly flushed.

The two arrived at the back garden of Capsule Corporation.

"Right here." Gohan pointed to a stretch of lush green lawn.

"Mm-hmm." Videl nodded.

They stepped onto the grass.

"Sit cross-legged." Gohan indicated the spot opposite him.

Today Videl wore jeans, so sitting cross-legged wasn't a problem.

She nodded obediently and sat down opposite him, looking well-behaved.

She studied his face and asked curiously, "Gohan, were you really born in age 757?"

"Yep, why?" Gohan said.

"No reason. Aunt Bulma said you're from 757, so I got curious. I'm also from 757—May 9. When's your birthday?"

Gohan: "..."

"Can't say?" Videl pressed.

Gohan laughed wryly. "You weren't like this in front of Aunt Bulma. Aren't you scared of me?"

Videl smiled. "She's an elder. We're peers, so no need to be stiff."

"So when is your birthday?"

"May 8," Gohan said helplessly.

"Really?" Videl's eyes widened.

"Why would I lie?" Gohan said.

"You're only one day older than me—how cool!" Videl beamed.

"So why did you come today?" Gohan asked deliberately, brow furrowed.

"Uh, to learn Bukujutsu from you. We agreed yesterday," Videl said.

Gohan said, "Then what are you doing now?"

Videl pouted. "Gossiping. Okay, okay, I'm wrong. Please teach me Bukujutsu, Gohan-kun."

"Mm, stop talking then," Gohan said flatly.

Videl: "..."

Gohan wasn't new to teaching.

He had taught Trunks for over a decade and was very experienced.

He collected his thoughts. "To learn Bukujutsu, you must first learn to use your Qi. Once you can control the Qi inside your body, Bukujutsu will come naturally."

"Qi? What's that? If I don't have Qi, can't I learn it?" Videl asked nervously.

"Relax—everyone has Qi; they just don't know how to use it."

"Qi is a kind of energy hidden inside our bodies."

"Ordinary people find it hard to tap into, but for us martial artists it's simple—we can easily sense, control, and use Qi."

"I know you've studied martial arts, so mastering Qi won't be difficult."

Gohan spoke confidently, rattling off knowledge Videl only half understood.

To Videl it might as well have been celestial script.

"Watch carefully." Gohan raised his right hand, palm up, and gripped the empty air.

Videl stared unblinkingly at his hand.

At that moment—

A swirl of air rose from Gohan's palm, cold light flickering as a sphere of energy formed.

"W-what is that?" Videl's eyes nearly popped.

Gohan said, "This is Qi."

With a flick of his wrist, he hurled the energy sphere; it shot out and smashed into a distant boulder.

With a boom the huge rock was instantly pulverized, the blast whipping Videl's long hair upward.

"I—I really have something like that inside me?"

Videl was stunned stiff.
