Julian didn't return to the hotel until well past midnight.
The long hallway was quiet, the sound of his own footsteps echoing against the marble floor. The dim lights stretched his shadow longer than usual, or maybe that was just how heavy everything felt tonight.
As soon as the door opened, Jane, who had been asleep, turned toward him.
"You're finally back," she said softly.
"Jonathan's been waiting downstairs. You should head home, Jane."
"Alright." Jane, Julian's assistant, got up and left right away.
Scarlett was still fast asleep, her hair slightly messy on the pillow. Her beautiful face looked calm, as if the world wasn't buzzing with her name at all.
"If anything happens, call me," Jane said before leaving.
The door closed quietly.
Silence filled the room again.
