But the hallway was on the way to his room. He just happened to be walking past slowly.
Very slowly.
"Check for monsters," Lily was saying.
The sound of Kael getting up. Opening the closet. Theatrical sounds of investigation. "No monsters."
"Under the bed."
More investigation sounds. "None under the bed either."
"What about the bathroom?"
"Lily." Kael's voice was patient. "We checked the bathroom last night."
"Monsters move around."
"That's not—" A pause. "Okay. Fair point."
"Bathroom is completely monster-free," Kael reported. "I have checked every possible monster location in this room and there are none. You are completely safe."
"What if there's one we didn't think of?"
"Then I'll fight it."
"You're not scared of monsters?"
"I'm a little scared of your Fer-daddy when he finds flour on the ceiling," Kael said. "But not monsters."
Lily giggled. "Fer-daddy's not scary."
"You haven't seen him at the dishwasher."
More giggling. Then settling sounds. Blankets.
