Chapter 12 - 12. Shift (2)

The shout of guard was met by silence, followed by immediate panic. The guards scrambled to close the city gate, while the people outside the city tried their best to get inside.

Seeing this, the guard captain hesitated for a few seconds, but duty and instincts of survival overcame his compassion. "Ready the bows, shoot all those who approach the gates."

The guards readying the bows naturally noticed the fact that their captain ordered fire on those who approached, not mentioning attackers from Ruth. However, they still steeled their hearts and fired upon their own people, comforting themselves that the ones outside the walls were only commoners, not nobles like themselves.

The fire elementals below watched in despair as their own people rained death onto them, while the gate of Turk closed, blocking their hopes of Survival.

Some, who had been crushed by despair, sat weakly on the ground, queitly awaiting death as the pristine white City gate of Turk turned orange from their blood (think blood similar to lava).

Some, who wished to survive, tried begging the guards to open the gate, but when their pleas were met with arrows to the head, they ran towards the army of Ruth, hoping to join them and be granted a chance to live. A foolish choice as this only changed their way of dying from arrows to swords and spears.

Some, who still had loyalty in their hearts, took out whatever could be considered as a weapon, including obsidian knives, sticks, rocks or even using bare fists, they charged towards the army of Ruth. Their end no much different than those who betrayed, only more honorable.

The army of Ruth quickly surrounded the city of Turk, blocking any chance of escape from the seige.

By this time, the news of the seige had already reached the ears of Helios Frandel. He quickly brought his clan warriors to the city walls, inspecting the siege.

After a moment of analysis, Helios experienced confusion,"They do not bring ladders or any other way to scale or break the walls. Perhaps due to time constraints, however....how do they plan to bring down my Turk without entering it?"

Helios's confusion was well founded, he clearly knew that Ruth planned to use the opportunity granted to them by the coronation of the new emperor and the death of the old one, hence, making sense why they would refuse to bring weapons of seige, sacrificing equipment for speed.

However, without seige equipments, they would not be able to bring down Turk, that much was certain. Not to mention, if they are not quick enough, then the news of Turk being besieged would soon find its way to the new emperor.

Although Helios believed the new emperor to be not as good as his father, who dared to raise the flag of rebellion against King Zeroth, he is still quite capable. Upon the learning of this news, he would surely launch an attack on the besieging army in order to cement his influence and declare his capabilities to old times like them. Then the army of Ruth would be the one surrounded, attacked from two sides, leading to its annihlation.

Just as Helios was pondering how the army of Ruth planned to enter Turk, a squad quickly detached from the main army, charging towards Turk's city walls.

The squad consisted of ten men, all highly trained jusging from the way they were doing arrows.

Helios frowned at the sight, leading to more arrows being fired and only half the squad reaching the city walls alive.

The cold calculation and detachment in his eyes was quickly replaced by shock and anger, as he watched the five members of that squad plant some seeds on the ground while channeling their energy into them. In the few seconds the seeds quickly sprouted, growing into tilted trees, reaching the walls.

"Spineless Dogs of Ruth, how dare you?!?! How dare your defile the sacred Feir with that parasitic Nuir!?!??!"

As he shouted, hundred of fire balls materialised behind him, shooting towards the army of Ruth, killing many.

The army quickly reacted, charging towards Turk's city walls, using to tilted trees to scale the walls, starting the brutal battle for the city walls, while Helios stood on the city gate, continuously shooting fire balls through one hand, while cutting down all those who tired to take control for he city gate, with a obsidian sword in the other.

This was destined to be long seige.

Author's note

Thanks for the support, I was gone for a marriage of a relative, hence the absence of chapters in the past few days. Here I would like to answer a question that i have seen someone ask. I will asnwers it with a bit of lore.

The world of Rhombus has a special way of giving gifts or powers, though actions.

Think of it like a video game, if you kill a lot of goblins, you will get a goblin slayer title which will boost your damage for goblins.

The world of Rhombus operates on a similar principle, except that here, titles are not shown, and their powers are tremendous.

This is why Zeroth is so powerful, because he has been granted a lot of titles.

Similarly, races also have titles.

For example, Ruth is loyal, proud and vengeful, causing them to hate traitors to the bone, and be intent on restoring their Honor.

On the contrary, Caldan is traditionalist, defiant of unrecognised authority, and full of fighting spirit against what they perceive as tyrants.

The reason for this is to promote the world's development, powerful beings would subconsciously (not consciously) try to get new titles, like emperor, leader, king, making them tied to their civilization, while also cultivating more powerful warriors.

If any of you think they there is something that I have yet to make clear, or if something needs more refinement, of if you simply don't understand, then comment, and I will be sure to respond.
