Beyond had played him.

Muhiel had helped.

The ruins were no longer a place worth staying. Kakin itself had stopped offering reasons to go back. Isaac Netero, Chairman of the Hunter Association, was a different matter. That meeting was worth making.

There was more than one road to the Dark Continent. Riding Kakin's black ship was only the loudest. Ronin had no interest in the Succession War and even less in sitting inside Beyond's design. Some of it would find him anyway. What he wanted to see was how Beyond planned to chain him to the Black Whale once the thing launched. Kurapika's earlier intelligence had already confirmed the secret shipyard. That vessel would carry the succession fight and a slice of Beyond's conspiracy across the water.

He was also weighing whether to tell Netero that the Chimera Ants would surface in NGL, inside the Mitene Union. The other option was simpler. Go there first, stay dark, and erase the nest the moment it dropped. He was curious what plan Beyond would still have for killing his father if the old man never had to leave Lake Mobius.

That would count as a reply.

The contact with Beyond had been enough. The man was the one behind the ants.

Thirteen pairs of Scarlet Eyes had come out of Pektaro's pack. One pair belonged to Pairo. Ronin fused the other twelve.

It was not enough for the Eternal Mangekyō. It was enough to repair the damage from Chrollo and Beyond, and the jump in ocular power was obvious. The last step, he suspected, was quality rather than count. Pairo's eyes had sold for a fortune and been called the king of the Scarlet Eyes. Those were still with Kurapika. Short term, they stayed there. Pairo had been his closest friend. Ronin could wait.

The eyes did more than feed the Sharingan. Each pair added a steady five thousand to his aura. Before the twelve he had already climbed past sixty thousand through training and earlier fusions. Afterward the potential sat above one hundred and twenty thousand.

He felt it when he shaped ninjutsu. Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation still was not Madara's. It was close enough to recognize the silhouette.

Digesting a jump that size would take real time.

They left the ruins, went back to Battera, and stepped into the game.

Ronin treated Greed Island as a quiet way to move. Board a ship with a pass and it would put them in any of two hundred ports around Lake Mobius. The A-rank and B-rank monsters were decent tools for sharpening Nen. He also wanted Razor. If he and a clone could win that dodgeball match, the new output would finally be settled into his body.

Kurapika did not come.

He stayed outside the game and took Impure World Pairo back to Kurta land. Ronin had no idea how long the reincarnation would hold. He left Kurapika a stack of sealed scrolls. Tear one and a clone would answer. The ugly limit was the same as always. Every use of Impure World Reincarnation needed a living body.

Shizuku, Abachi, and Neon entered the game with him. Abachi was the one who actually wanted to see it. The moment Ronin said they were free to move, she went to the port and joined the fishing contest. Neon headed for Aiai to watch what "sweet romance" looked like from the street. Shizuku had no interest in either. She liked Antokiba and took every bounty the city would give her.

Ronin went into the mountains alone and started hunting the hard bosses.

He did not mind the wilderness. The binder made living off the land cleaner than Owl and the large cloth ever had. The fights pulled more of his potential into usable aura. Enhancement hit harder. His fists were starting to travel the road Uvogin had talked about—punches that wanted to be missiles.

He could copy Gon's Hatsu if he felt like it. He did not. Full-spectrum reinforcement suited him better. Burst work belonged to ninjutsu. Jajanken needed a wind-up to dump everything into one strike. A Super Great Ball Rasengan could carry more than ninety percent of his aura the moment he decided to form it.

So the Enhancement work went into healing. Yin Seal and Creation Rebirth were already there. Stronger regeneration still felt like the safer bet. A man who had died once tended to keep score.

Time moved.

In mid-December of '97 Ronin walked out of the mountains and into Soufrabi.

Thirteen people arrived with him.

Three of them were Shizuku's group. The rest he had paid. Their job was to open the instance and put him in front of the gatekeeper.

Razor.
