As soon as Karrien recognized me standing there, his face paled instantly. "Elwyn... Miss Elwyn?" His voice trembled, and his wide eyes reflected shock, as though he couldn't believe what he was seeing. I could see the panic spreading across his face, as if my presence had shattered any remaining confidence he held. His hands shook, and he instinctively took a step back, as though the mere sight of me had demolished all the self-assurance he once had.
My return had clearly rattled Karrien. I had disappeared from their lives after divorcing Alian, and now, my sudden reappearance felt like a sharp blow to his psyche. "Wh-what are you doing here?" Karrien stammered, his gaze darting between me, Alian, and Jackie. He was completely lost, unsure how to react to this unexpected situation.
