Chapter 26 - The Inner Circle

Alisha POV

The elevator ride felt endless.

Alex stood behind me, silent, his presence radiating control. My fingers brushed against his, brushing against the reassurance I craved without admitting it. He didn't hold my hand this time—not yet. He wanted me to know that closeness came with consequence.

The doors opened to a room bathed in muted gold light. Faces turned toward us immediately—sharp, assessing, all wearing the kind of calm that masked lethal intent. The inner circle. Alex's people. The ones who measured loyalty in seconds, in silences, in the weight of choices.

They studied me. Some with curiosity, some with something colder, evaluating whether I was threat, weakness, or… distraction.

Alex's hand found mine at last, subtly, grounding me as he stepped forward. "They know why you're here," he murmured. "Stay close. Listen."

I nodded, though every nerve screamed that nothing in this room was simple.

A man seated at the head of the table stood—tall, imposing, the kind of presence that made the air thicken. "So," he said smoothly, voice precise, "you're the one he chose."

I met his gaze. Didn't flinch. Couldn't. Not with Alex at my side.

"Interesting," he said, a faint smile playing across his lips. "Most don't survive even the first hour."

I swallowed, letting my pulse steady. "I'm not most."

Alex's jaw tightened. His hand squeezed mine, just enough to remind me he was here—and that any misstep would be met with consequence.

"You've seen enough of his world to know what staying costs," he murmured softly, lips near my ear. "Don't pretend you don't feel it."

"I do," I whispered. "And I still choose him."

A subtle shift ran through the circle. Eyes flicked between us, calculating, testing. Some curiosity, some something darker—jealousy, perhaps. A few studied Alex too closely, and I realized I wasn't the only one whose choice would be questioned.

Alex's voice cut low and smooth, a predator's rumble beneath calm. "I didn't bring her here for you to doubt her. Or to test me. She stays because she chooses to. End of discussion."

The words weren't loud, but they carried weight. A warning. A promise.

I felt heat rise in my chest—not from the tension, but from the way he said it. Protectiveness. Ownership. Desire that didn't need to be spoken aloud.

One of the circle, a woman with piercing eyes, leaned forward. "And if she can't handle it?"

Alex's hand tightened over mine. "Then she leaves. But she hasn't faltered. Not once."

I looked up at him. His eyes, dark and stormy, softened just slightly when they met mine. The storm wasn't gone. It would never be gone. But there was… trust there now.

Another man, younger, shifted uneasily. "You risk everything for her."

Alex shrugged lightly. Not arrogance. Not bravado. Resignation. "Some risks are worth it."

The air hummed with quiet threat, tension, and… something I didn't expect. Desire. The way he looked at me, not as a liability, not as a weakness—but as something vital. Something worth fighting for.

When the meeting ended, we were left alone in the hallway.

Alex pressed me lightly against the wall, a warning and a claim. "You see now," he murmured. "Being here… being with me… it's dangerous. You could leave at any time and still survive. But if you stay…"

"I stay," I said firmly.

His lips brushed my temple. "Then you know the cost."

I shivered—not from fear, but from the way his closeness set every nerve alight.

And I knew, with absolute certainty, that whatever storms came next, we would face them together.

Because leaving him wasn't an option. Not now. Not ever.
