Chapter 14 - The Madness of Truth

"Oh, it's such a relief to have the transition go so smoothly," I heard Phoebe trill to Cassandra. "Vivienne was so instrumental. We really couldn't have done it without her 'insider knowledge' of the building's weaknesses."

 

Cassandra burst into laughter. "Oh, she is so gullible, Mother. Now we don't have any issues with the land anymore."

 

I clenched my fists tightly, watching as they mocked me. They were right; I had been gullible enough to believe that Phoebe would ever like me or even have my best interests at heart.

 

"Phoebe!" I screamed out loud, unable to take it anymore. I came out from my hiding spot and headed straight toward her.

 

The laughter stopped instantly. A dozen heads turned, their eyes widening as they took in my disheveled state. My hair was falling out of its pins, and my eyes were red and swollen from crying.
