Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

A Chance Meeting

Audrey stepped out of Mrs. Edith's house, the autumn air brushing softly against her cheeks. Today, she told herself, she would take a walk through Rosewood's streets—not just to explore, but to remind herself that life could still feel gentle, even after betrayal.

The town smelled faintly of fresh bread and rain, the sunlight spilling over cobblestones and warming the small cafés that lined the street. Audrey let her fingers graze the wooden fence as she walked, grounding herself in the simple beauty of her new home.

Ahead, a young man struggled with a large cardboard box, its contents threatening to tumble over. He cursed under his breath, shifting it awkwardly. Audrey hesitated for a moment. Part of her wanted to ignore him and keep walking—after all, strangers weren't supposed to matter—but something tugged at her.

"Do you… need a hand?" she asked softly.

He looked up, surprise flashing in his deep brown eyes. For a heartbeat, he didn't respond, as if he wasn't sure she was real. Then, relief softened his expression.

"Yeah… actually, that would help. Thanks," he said, his voice calm but edged with fatigue.

Together, they managed to lift the box and set it safely on the sidewalk. Audrey's heart beat faster than she expected—not from exertion, but from the brief contact and the intensity of his gaze.

"I'm Alex," he said, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. There was a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips, hesitant but genuine.

"I'm Audrey," she replied, feeling a curious flutter in her chest—a mix of intrigue, warmth, and something unnameable. Why does he feel familiar already? she wondered.

A moment of silence stretched between them, comfortable yet charged, as if the world had slowed down just to give them this meeting. The box now secure, Alex adjusted it once more.

"Thanks… really," he said, looking at her intently. "I hope we… run into each other again."

Audrey returned his gaze, words catching in her throat. She wanted to say something clever or witty, but all that came out was a soft, honest:

"I think we will."

As he walked away, she felt her chest tighten and release at the same time. Who was this stranger? And why did it feel as though Rosewood had finally delivered the possibility of something new—someone who might change her life?

Audrey exhaled, letting the breeze carry away the remnants of Ashford's shadows. Today, she realized, wasn't just the start of a new town—it was the start of a story that was entirely hers.

That evening, Audrey decided she deserved a small escape. She entered a nearby bar, the warm lights and soft music wrapping around her like a temporary shield from her worries. One drink led to another, and soon, the room spun in ways that made her stomach churn.

Voices became louder, laughter sharper, and a group of men she hadn't noticed began closing in, blocking her path. Panic gripped her chest as fear and intoxication combined into a dizzying whirl.

Suddenly, a familiar voice called: "Audrey!"

Alex was there in an instant, his presence steady and commanding. "Hey! Step back!" he barked, his eyes scanning the men, his voice sharp enough to make them pause.

With swift, decisive movements, he guided Audrey toward the door, placing himself between her and the threatening group. Audrey clung to him, trembling, her heart racing as he steered her through the chaos. Outside, the cool night air hit her, bringing a sobering clarity.

"I… I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here," she whispered, voice shaky, tears brimming.

"You're safe now," Alex said softly, giving her a reassuring squeeze. "I've got you."

Audrey's chest swelled with gratitude and something new—a quiet trust she hadn't felt in months. For the first time since leaving Ashford, she realized she wasn't entirely alone in this town. Someone—maybe even the stranger she had helped with the box earlier—could actually be on her side.

As Alex led her to a safe corner and checked that she was steady, she couldn't help but feel that this chance encounter might be the start of something that could c

hange her life forever.
