Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Faithful Companion

The chirping of birds and ticks of insects, the customary sounds to wake up to when living out in the woods. The rustling and shifting of feathers followed by a thud as an angel falls out of bed. Rolling around on the ground with a groan Sarah awakens from a night of restless sleep. Groggily grabbing a pillow she drags it along the ground as she makes her way out of the bedroom down the hallway and into the living room. Raising her arm she took aim and launched the pillow directly at a sleeping Cyrus.

" Hurry up and get a new bed."

Being woken up by a pillow hitting his face Cyrus simply grabs it and tosses it to the side and rolls back over. " Find the money to afford one and I'll buy it."

Sarah furrowed her brow. " No, that's not my job, and what kinda guy makes a girl sleep in such a condition for a week anyways."

" The guy who is being nice enough to sleep on the couch." He'd yawn and start to sit up. " Plus we're not gonna be staying here anymore."

" Yeah, it took you long enough to get ready."

" It would've gone quicker if your magic wasn't so useless."

Her face turned a slight shade of red as she started to blow up. " It's not my fault this body isn't channeling my mana properly."

" Yeah, Yeah mana channeling and all that."- He waves her off as he gets up and starts to make his way to the bedroom- " We're leaving once I'm done getting ready."

" Okay hurry up I'm tired of living in this shack."

He rolled his eyes as he walked past her and into his room. Getting into his room he threw on his hunting equipment, his skin tight black bodysuit, throwing his cyan and indigo cloak on over top before pulling up his matching hip guards. Getting fully clothed he walked over to a dresser and opened up the top drawer, grabbing out an ornate dagger. Its scabbard resembled a snake head with the hilt ending in a sharp pointed tail. Raising it up to his lips he kisses it before attaching it to the back of his waist. As he did there'd be a sigh from the entrance to his room.

" You love that dagger way too much."

" Oh shut it, I saved up a lot to buy this thing. Besides, until a few days ago all I had was my magic. It feels good to have one again."

She rolls her eyes. " And it makes no sense how you managed that, you don't even know how the flow of mana works."

" Who needs to know that, I think about lightning and it happens."

 " I can't tell if you're a prodigy or just an idiot."

Cyrus would give a little chuckle before grabbing a small brown leather backpack from the same drawer and closing it. Heading out of his room with Sarah in tow Henry would waddle up to him from the kitchen. Cyrus smiling and crouching down, taking the little backpack and starting to put it on him. Sarah rolling her eyes and letting out a heavy sigh.

" Are we really bringing the duck?"

" Yes, I wouldn't leave him here alone, who knows how long we'll be gone. Plus he's saved my life countless times."

Sarah glares down at Henry only to be met with the duck glaring right back. The two stare at each other in silence as Cyrus continues to attach the bag onto his back. Her sky blue eyes staring into the very depths of the grounded bird's eyes and in return the duck's emerald eyes stare right back, the vast blank mental state of a duck evident in his eyes.

 " Quack."

" Yep, I'm done you're both idiots." She throws her hands up and breaks her gaze.

"Quack." With his backpack now securely fastened onto his back he waddles off to get ready in a way only a duck could.

After watching Sarah lose a stare down to his trusty companion Cyrus let out a laugh. Standing back up he makes his way around his entire house. Checking each room before inevitably making his way back to the living room and to the front door. With the final sweep of his home complete there was nothing else holding him back from leaving. A week ago Cyrus was living his normal life in the forest and with one fateful encounter he was being thrust out of his normal routine. A mysterious pseudo core had merged with his body and with Sarah as his guide he was embarking out into the world on a mission he knew nothing about.
