Chapter 10 - Almost Ugly for a Lifetime

So all the trouble she'd gone through all these years had been for nothing, hadn't it?

Ye Wanwan felt like dying.

Thank goodness she'd figured it out in time this time—otherwise, she would've stayed ugly for the rest of her life.

"What? Something wrong?"

"N-Nothing!" Ye Wanwan replied, her face twisted with grievance.

"Heh..." A low chuckle rumbled beside her ear.

Ye Wanwan jolted, turning to stare at the man in shock.

Gone was the usual eerie coldness, the violent darkness, the vacant indifference from his dazzlingly handsome face—Si Yehan was actually smiling...

She'd noticed it earlier; the man seemed to be in an unusually good mood today.

Was it because he'd slept well last night?

In truth, Si Yehan's irascible, short-tempered nature had a lot to do with his insomnia. No one could stand being unable to sleep properly for such a long time.

A thought sparked in Ye Wanwan's mind.

Should she take advantage of Si Yehan's rare good mood to beg for her freedom?

After she'd nearly escaped, Si Yehan had flown into a rage and locked her up at home, forbidding her from even going to school.

Before she'd come downstairs just now, she'd received a text from her class monitor, telling her to come back to school. If she kept skipping classes like this, she might get disciplined—or even expelled.

She'd already repeated her junior year twice because of her terrible grades, which was why she was still a senior in high school at twenty.

She remembered that in her previous life, there was only one thing she'd been obsessed with every day: Gu Yueze.

Before she'd met Si Yehan, she'd been infatuated with Gu Yueze; after meeting Si Yehan, she'd only wanted to run back to Gu Yueze. She'd never had the heart to study, and later, she couldn't even go to school at all, missing her college entrance exam entirely.

This time, she couldn't repeat the mistakes of her past life—couldn't give up on herself, couldn't watch as Ye Yiyi and Gu Yueze took everything that belonged to the Ye family.

True, she'd angered Si Yehan by trying to run away, but she hadn't actually gone with Gu Yueze in the end. So their relationship wasn't beyond repair yet—she should at least try to fight for it.

Ye Wanwan took a deep breath and tentatively spoke up. "Um, Si Yehan... The college entrance exam is coming up soon. I need to cram for it. Can I... go back to school?"

The second the words left her mouth, the air in the room turned frigid in an instant. The cold, menacing look returned to the man's face, as if it had never left.

Ye Wanwan's heart sank. So it really was a no-go.

It was no surprise, though. How could Si Yehan possibly believe she wanted to go back to study? He'd probably think she was still harboring the same old escape plan.

She'd known it wouldn't be easy, but disappointment still washed over her. Her expression dimmed, and even the steamed buns—her favorite—suddenly lost their appeal. She mumbled softly, "It's fine if you don't want me to go."

But instead of softening, Si Yehan's expression seemed to darken even further.

Ye Wanwan didn't want to ruin the fragile truce they'd reached, so she quickly added, "I was just saying it casually!"

Si Yehan didn't say a word. He just stared at the girl's suddenly downcast eyes, at the panicked surrender on her face, watching as the bright, lively spark in her expression faded back to the dullness he was used to seeing. An uncontrollable wave of irritation surged through him...

Ye Wanwan sighed inwardly. This man was truly impossible to please. She'd already backed down—so why did he still look like he wanted to kill someone?
