Chapter 7 - 7: Want to Save Your Comrades?

The American defeat came faster than Jeno expected.

After hurriedly dumping a pile of corpses and howling wounded, the remaining troops retreated as if they wished for extra legs.

Back at the American base,

Jeno stood with his hands clasped behind his back, watching the bedraggled, defeated army.

Major William also stood at the base's edge. Watching his forces retreat in disarray once more, his face turned a livid shade of green.

A captain ran up to Major William, reporting frantically, "Sir! Some of our men are still on the island! They haven't evacuated!"

"Sigh."

William closed his eyes, sighing. "There's nothing we can do. Those damned Japanese are devils. We are powerless."

The captain angrily tore off his helmet, shouting at William, "Those are our countrymen! Are we just going to leave them there to die?!"

William glared coldly at the captain. "Watch your tone, Captain! I am also grieved. But there's no way. We cannot risk another landing just for them."

"Fuck!"

The captain swore, glaring at William, inwardly cursing him as an incompetent commander. This fool had already sent so many soldiers to their deaths on that island.

William snorted coldly. "All officers with the rank of captain and above, attend the briefing."

He intended to organize another offensive.

William led the officers away, leaving the captain alone.

"Sigh."

The captain slumped to the ground, defeated. Those on the island were his brothers-in-arms, men he'd lived and fought alongside. Now, William had left them there to die.

Thinking of the cruel, food-starved Japanese possibly using his comrades as sustenance, the captain couldn't hold back his tears. I'm useless!

From a distance, Jeno heard every word of their conversation. A slight smile touched his lips. "Logan, Victor, with me."

The two brothers, who had been squatting nearby, quickly stood up.

Jeno led them to the weeping captain.

"Captain, do you want to rescue your comrades?"

Sniffle, cough. " W-who are you? "The captain, choking on his own snot, opened his tear-filled eyes to look at Jeno.

"We are 'The Boys.'"

Jeno once again produced the document he'd shown William and handed it to the captain.

"I'm Captain Charlie." Charlie took the file. Reading about the superhuman squad, a glimmer of hope rekindled in his previously despondent eyes. "You... you can really save the men on the island?"

Logan quickly added, "Our captain alone could wipe out all the Japanese on that island!"

Charlie gritted his teeth, making a decision. "Alright. If you can really do it, I'll go with you!"

He pointed to the ships guarded by soldiers. "But the base is on lockdown now. How do we get over there?"

"Ships?" Jeno smiled faintly. "We don't need ships."

Hearing Jeno's words, Logan's face changed drastically.

"Wait! Captain, I can swim on my own—"

Before Logan could finish, Jeno said nonchalantly, "We'll fly."

With that, Jeno grabbed all three men and leaped into the air. Instantly, they were airborne.

"Ahhhh!"

"Boss, slow down! I... I'm gonna puke!" Victor's face turned pale. He finally understood why Logan had been vomiting earlier.

"You... you can fly, Lieutenant Jeno?"

Charlie watched the ground recede, struggling to believe it.

"Of course."

Jeno nodded. Against the howling wind, he flew towards Peleliu Island, holding them by their collars.

His speed was tremendous, parting the clouds like a cannonball streaking toward the island.

BOOM!

The earth trembled upon impact.

Jeno landed. The surrounding sand and soil couldn't withstand the immense force, exploding outward.

Urgh!

The violent disorientation from the landing made Logan, Victor, and Charlie kneel simultaneously.

The Japanese soldiers on the island were startled. Many rubbed their eyes. They were starving, emaciated, wondering if they were hallucinating from hunger. They couldn't believe the scene before them.

Four Americans fell from the sky? What kind of black magic is this?

"Kill them!"

A Japanese officer hurriedly drew his katana. A group of soldiers cocked their rifles and fired at Jeno.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Countless bullets flew towards the group. Jeno, arms crossed, instantly placed himself in front of the other three.

The dense barrage of bullets struck his steely body, sparking harmlessly.

"Th-this man! He's a monster!"

"He's a demon (Yasha)! He can't be killed!"

The Japanese soldiers stared in terror at Jeno, completely unscathed. Someone who can withstand bullets? This guy is definitely a devil!

"Tsk. Everyone done shooting?"

Jeno lowered his arms. The bullets didn't hurt, but a few hitting his eyes felt a bit itchy.

"If you're done, then it's my turn!"

Under everyone's gaze, Jeno slowly rose into the air. His eyes began to glow with a red light.

ZAP!

Searing Heat Vision swept across the island. It passed over the ground, the trenches. Everywhere it touched, the earth was cleaved in two, leaving a long, smoking fissure.

With his X-ray vision, even Japanese soldiers hiding in tunnels were precisely targeted and incinerated by Jeno's Heat Vision.

The scorching lasers pierced bodies, leaving lines of charred wounds. Blood and flesh fell to the earth, raising clouds of dust.

This was a one-sided massacre. And the enemy of the Japanese soldiers was just one man.

"My... my God!"

Captain Charlie wiped the vomit from his mouth, staring dumbfoundedly at Jeno wreaking havoc in the sky.

The red lasers shooting from his eyes were like the scythe of Death himself, relentlessly harvesting Japanese lives.

"Superman... He's Superman!"

Those words instinctively popped into Charlie's mind.

Beside him, Logan and Victor also stared up at Jeno. They felt like mascots—they'd come all this way and done nothing but watch Jeno go on a killing spree.

The terrifying Heat Vision continuously swept across every part of the island. With each movement, it claimed swathes of lives.

The smell of charred flesh filled the air.

Fwoosh!

As the Heat Vision pierced the last soldier's body, Jeno deactivated it. He rubbed his slightly stinging eyes and slowly descended to the ground.

The once trench-filled island was now littered with severed limbs and bodies.

The horrific Heat Vision had not only killed the Japanese soldiers but also scorched the very earth.

Charlie was plunged into deep existential doubt.

The formidable fortress that the American military couldn't capture in months... was destroyed this easily by one man?

Then, a wave of anger filled his heart. That damn Major William! He's a pig! His brain is pig-brained too!

Jeno is this powerful. Why didn't he send Jeno to the front lines, instead ordering soldiers to die for nothing?!

Jeno walked over to Charlie and patted his shoulder. Charlie's face was red with anger.

"Captain Charlie, go find your comrades. They are all still alive."

While using his Heat Vision, Jeno had deliberately avoided the survivors, so the wounded Americans were still alive.

"Y-yes, sir!"

Charlie instinctively obeyed Jeno's words, walking towards the scorched battlefield to search for survivors.

Jeno put on a bright, cheerful smile, turning to Logan and Victor. "You two, go help as well."

"Our mission in 'The Boys' is to save lives and aid the wounded!"

He puffed out his chest, striking a noble and righteous pose.

If one ignored the field of corpses around them, his words might have carried a shred of credibility.

"Yes, Boss! Right away, Boss!"

Logan and Victor spoke in unison, hurrying off towards the battlefield to search for American casualties.
