Chapter 11 - Chapter 11. A Ghost Who Could Not Protect Her

Adrian desperately wanted to protect Elowen, but right now he could not even knock over an ordinary person. How was he supposed to help her take revenge on those vile people?

He knew his strength was slowly returning. At the moment, he could already make the living shudder with fear and interact with physical objects, but it was still far too slow. He was terrified that the fragile girl would be killed by those lunatics before he could do anything.

Adrian did not know that his chance had already arrived. The ambulance sped straight to the hospital, and Elowen was rushed into the emergency room. Lucien sat waiting outside. He did not look worried at all. His expression was cold and detached, his eyes completely devoid of emotion.

"Is she dead?"

Suddenly, Lucien muttered under his breath. The corner of his lips curled upward, his eyes wide in a way that made him look no different from a madman.

"How could you die? I have not had enough fun with you yet. You are not allowed to die. You cannot die."

Lucien raked his hands through his hair. His pupils turned hollow, his mouth hanging open as he muttered nonstop. If anyone had seen him like this, they would have been terrified by his manic state.

He walked up to the emergency room door, grinding his teeth, then raised both hands and clawed at the wall. His fingernails scraped against the cement, leaving long chalky white streaks behind.

After a while, the emergency room lights went out and the door opened. Lucien immediately returned to his usual calm and gentle demeanor and asked the doctor, "How is she?"

The doctor glanced at the uniform Lucien was wearing, which looked similar to the girl's, and seemed to guess something. He sighed. "She has a mild concussion, but it is not too serious. With some rest, she will recover. But young man, if possible, you should call her parents and have them come to the hospital. She was beaten this badly, and the school will not ignore it. School bullying has to be dealt with at the root, or her future school life will only get worse."

The doctor assumed Elowen was a victim of school bullying. Looking at her condition, even a stranger like him felt heartache. A pretty girl like Elowen should never have to endure such unreasonable harm.

Lucien lowered his gaze and nodded. "I know."

After that, Elowen was moved to a regular ward. Lucien stood there watching her for a long time. Only after confirming that she was not dead did he finally turn and leave.

Earlier, Adrian had followed Elowen all the way into the emergency room, so he had not seen Lucien's deranged behavior. Now, seeing him leave, Adrian clenched his teeth and cursed, "That bastard. Can you not see Elowen is all alone? And you just walk away?"

Even so, Adrian did not actually want Lucien to stay. He knew very well that Lucien was a pervert. More than anything, Adrian wished Lucien would stay as far away from Elowen as possible.

Adrian gently stroked Elowen's face. Her eyelashes trembled, and a painful sob escaped her throat.

"Be good. You have to hold on. Do not give up. Once I find my body, I will never let you suffer like this again."

Adrian did not know how many times he had made these promises. Even though he knew she could not hear him, he kept saying them anyway, because they were also what kept him from becoming a real ghost.

Suddenly, Adrian's attention was drawn to a figure passing through the hospital corridor. His pupils shook, and he hurriedly flew after that person.

"Oliver. Oliver. Can you hear me? Take me to my body. Hurry up."

Adrian was crazed with joy when he saw his assistant. But the man named Oliver only shivered slightly, as if he had felt a sudden chill, then indifferently walked straight through Adrian's body.

Adrian called out to Oliver, but he did not hear him. He even quickened his pace, as if the chill curling around his neck was urging him on.

"This hospital really feels haunted. I have no idea why it gives me the creeps."

Oliver quickly put about ten meters between himself and the emergency ward. Adrian wanted to chase after him, but an invisible force dragged him back. He could not stray far from Elowan. As uncomfortable as it was, Adrian could only watch his assistant disappear from sight.

"Damn it!"

He cursed under his breath, yet there was nothing he could do. Right now, he was nothing more than a ghost.

"If Oliver showed up here, then my body must be somewhere nearby. Judging by the direction he went, I am probably lying in the VIP wing. But how am I supposed to get Elowen over there?"

Feeling drained, Adrian drifted back to Elowen's hospital room. She was awake now. There were three other people inside, two younger ones and an older one, all dressed elegantly. Their attitude was not exactly respectful, more like gentle and coaxing, as if they were asking for a favor. By the time Adrian arrived, they were already getting up to leave.

Adrian frowned. After staying by Elowen's side for three months, he knew perfectly well that she was not some Rothschild heiress. She was just the daughter of a nurse. Those people were definitely not from the Rothschild family, nor were they related to her in any way. So why had they come looking for her?

What bothered him even more was how pale and lifeless Elowen looked. Had something happened in the short time he was gone?

Adrian lightly brushed the back of Elowen's hand to let her know he was there. She immediately brightened, smiling wide. "Where did you go just now? I thought you disappeared."

When she had first woken up, she had called out to her ghost friend but got no response, and it had frightened her badly. It had taken so long for her to finally have someone who cared about her and listened to her. She did not want to go back to the lonely life she had before.
