Chapter 12 - chapter 12

~Mabel~

I walked up to see a crying Estella over Cassidy's lifeless body, and Asher Sharpe sprawled awkwardly on the ground around a tree. I kneeled beside Estella, and my eyes widened. Her tears flowed down on Cassidy, steadily soaking her shirt. Somehow, her chest was glowing.

Estella didn't notice, so I didn't say anything. But this was old magic.

The golden light spread from Cass's chest down her arms, legs, and up to her cradled head. Something big was happening. I couldn't hide my shock when I stared at Estella, slightly frightened, slightly awed. Once the glowing subsided, Estella opened her eyes, and I wiped my face of the look that I was uncontrollably spearing her with.

"The Queen wishes to speak with you in the Headmistress's office, Estella. I'll take care of Cass and Asher." I murmured to her.

Estella slowly untangled herself from Cassidy and stood up, looking hollow.

"You're right, thank you." Her eyes and voice were dead and cold.

She walked away stiffly, and I watched her disappear through the trees. The wind whistled, and the trees swayed. 'It was oddly windy today. It didn't feel normal. Is that part of her power, too? What exactly is she?

I waved my hand at Asher and he woke up. "Help me bring Cassidy to the back of the infirmary. I don't think she's dead." I said tightly, not wanting to reveal too much especially if I'm wrong.

Asher groaned as he sat up, when he saw me he scrambled to explain. "Save it Loverboy I don't think you killed her. Now, get up and help me as I said." I huffed impatiently.

Asher rushed to my side apologizing, my god, is he like this with Estella all the time? I rolled my eyes but kept my mouth shut as we carried her to the infirmary.

We gently set her down on one of the hospital beds and pulled the blanket over her cold body.

"We should tell Estella." Asher whispered, trying not to wake the sleeping girl before us.

"No, we should wait to see if she even wakes up. We shouldn't get her hopes up and… there's something I think you should know." I said tentatively, setting up wards around the little area so that no one could hear.

"What do I need to know?" Asher said as he watched me work.

I took a deep breath and ripped off the band aid. "Cassidy was dead."

"Dead dead? Like not supposed to come back dead?" Asher asked incredulously.

"Yeah, dead dead." I said just above a whisper.

"What do you think happened?" He asked worriedly.

"I think Estella brought her back but she doesn't know, don't bring it up to her." I said sternly, pointing a finger at him.

"She doesn't wanna talk to me anyway. She thinks I killed her best friend, remember?" He rolled his eyes but I could see the hurt and heartbreak under the surface of his mostly closed off face.
