Chapter 29: The Pocket-Deep Betrayal

[System Notification: Stealth Failed — 'The Secret is Out' | Drama Level: Redline]

The discharge day was supposed to be a celebration. I was finally leaving the hospital, my concussion cleared, and Ishaan had gone above and beyond. He had filled the car with my favorite snacks and even brought a soft cushion for my head.

But the universe—and Ananya's laundry habits—had other plans.

As we stood at the hospital entrance waiting for the valet, Ananya reached into the pocket of her oversized denim jacket to find her car keys. Instead, she pulled out a crumpled, ivory-colored card. It fell to the floor, landing face-up right at Ishaan's feet.

Time seemed to slow down. Ishaan leaned over, his brow furrowed, and picked it up before Ananya could even gasp.

"What's this?" he asked, his voice neutral. But as his eyes scanned the elegant script and the embossed compass seal, his face transformed. The warmth evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.

"'See you at the premiere'?" Ishaan read aloud, his voice trembling with a new kind of fury. "'M'? The same 'M' from the blue poppies?"

"Ishaan, it's not what it looks like," Ananya stammered, reaching for the card.

Ishaan stepped back, holding the card out of reach. He looked at Ananya, then turned his gaze to me. It was the look of a man who had just realized he was the only person in the room not in on a joke.

"You knew," he said to me, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "The flowers. The card. You knew it wasn't some random admirer. You knew who this was."

"I... I didn't know at first," I said, my voice shaking. "Ananya recognized the handwriting. It's Madhavan Rao, Ishaan. My old mentor."

"Madhavan Rao?" Ishaan let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "The man involved in the Hong Kong scandal? The man whose name is synonymous with high-level corporate shadow-play? That's who you're keeping secrets with now?"

"We weren't keeping secrets with him!" Ananya interjected. "We were keeping it from you so you wouldn't overreact!"

"Overreact?" Ishaan stepped toward me, the card clutched in his fist. "Meera, I almost lost my career for you. I almost lost you on that highway. We promised—right there in that hospital bed—no more secrets. And the first thing you do is hide a message from a billionaire ghost who's 'watching' your project?"

"It was to protect you!" I shouted, the stress of the secret finally breaking. "Ananya said you'd go on another warpath! I didn't want you risking anything else for me!"

"Protect me?" Ishaan's eyes flashed with a hurt so deep it made my chest ache. "Is that what we're calling it now? I thought we were building a life together, Meera. But a life built on 'protective lies' is just a prettier version of what Julian was doing."

The Breaking Point

He shoved the card into my hand.

"I'm going back to the hospital," he said, his voice flat. "I have a double shift. Don't wait up."

"Ishaan, wait!" I grabbed his arm, but he pulled away.

"No, Meera. You want to open a bakery with the help of a shadow mentor? Fine. You want to play the 'Big Architect' game? Go ahead. But don't ask me to be the foundation when you're still building on top of secrets."

He didn't look back. He walked away, his white coat fluttering in the wind, leaving me and Ananya standing in the drizzle.

The Blue Shutter Patisserie was glowing. The paint was dry, the sourdough was proofing, and the rare blue poppies were arranged in the center of every table. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever designed.

But as the VIP guests began to arrive, there was a gaping hole in the room.

Ananya walked up to me, wearing a stunning silk saree, but her eyes were worried. "He hasn't answered my texts, Meera. Not one."

"He's not coming," I said, staring at the entrance. "I built this for us, Ananya. But right now, it feels like I just built a very expensive cage."

Suddenly, a black limousine with tinted windows pulled up to the curb. The crowd went silent. The door opened, and a man stepped out. He wasn't young, but he moved with a gravity that commanded the entire street.

Madhavan Rao had arrived.

But as he walked toward me, his eyes weren't on the building. He was looking past me, toward a dark SUV that had just pulled up behind his limo.

The door of the SUV opened. Ishaan stepped out. He wasn't wearing a suit. He was wearing his scrubs, looking like he hadn't slept in days. In his hand, he wasn't holding a gift.

He was holding a legal folder.
