The desert night was biting cold. A pale moon hung against the indigo sky, spilling wan light across the endless sea of sand and illuminating a hidden nook sheltered by an enormous rock on the edge of Team Sayo's makeshift camp.

Sayo sat cross-legged on the ground, a complex energy-circuit blueprint spread before him. Scattered around were odd materials: off-cuts of the Divine Tree (Shinju) gleaned from ancient ruins, still faintly pulsing with a rhythmic, alien energy; a tough, chakra-conductive metal discovered in the shattered tool-pouch of an Iwa elite Jōnin; and rare ores and timber he'd bartered—using mission pay and the profits from selling his "Spider" puppets—through his father's connections.

The hunt for the Third Kazekage had dragged on for months without a clue, the team blundering like headless flies along the vast border. Grueling battles and monotonous reconnaissance had driven many to the brink of exhaustion. Yet for Sayo, the grind was a laboratory. Every post-battle sweep was a chance to harvest the high-level components needed for the grand blueprint in his mind.

His past life as a mechanical engineer gave him insights into material stress and energy conversion rates that were centuries ahead of the current era. Combined with the sealing lore from Bunpuku and the puppet sciences of the Sand, he was ready to bridge the gap between magic and machinery.

"A chakra-powered 'body tempering furnace' is still too inefficient," Sayo whispered, tracing a finger over the label marked Core Module. The original core was a simple transducer—it converted raw chakra into a faintly Yang-tinted energy to nourish his cells, but the conversion loss was staggering, making his meridian repair agonizingly slow.

The acquisition of the Divine Tree shard changed the math. Shukaku's ramblings about Natural Energy (Senjutsu) had provided the missing variable. Natural energy was omnipresent and vast, but direct absorption was fatal—a shortcut to becoming a stone statue. Sayo's engineering solution: use the Divine Tree shard as a semiconductor and filter. He would craft a Natural Energy Puppet Core that could draw and "pre-tame" the world's energy, using it as the primary fuel for the furnace.

This required precision calculations. While his teammates slept, worn down by the desert sun, Sayo sat solving equations by the light of a chakra-conductive brush. In his mind, the circuit boards of his past life overlapped with the tenketsu diagrams of the present, sparking a unique technological synthesis.

Several days later, back in his secret workshop in Sunagakure, the upgrade reached its climax. Behind perception-blocking barriers, Sayo worked with the steadiness of a master surgeon. He ground the smallest Divine Tree shard into a fine, humming powder, mixing it with conductive ores to inscribe microscopic sealing arrays onto an adamantine base. Holding his breath, he released hair-thin chakra threads, activating every node with pinpoint accuracy.

When the final rune flared with a gentle, life-rich pulse, Sayo exhaled. The filtering module was complete. He integrated it with the conversion unit, housing it in the Iwa-metal chassis. The result was the Natural Energy Puppet Core (Prototype)—a palm-sized device that rippled with soft, iridescent light.

He then iterated the furnace itself. He rerouted the internal flow to handle the higher-purity Nature-tempered stream. The new furnace was smaller, more efficient, and significantly safer. Nor did he forget his tactical partner: the Ōgumo received refined joints for heavier loads, and Sayo applied his nascent Magnet Release to etch Magnetic-Levitation Runes into its feet. It couldn't fly, but its weight on the sand was halved, drastically increasing its speed while cutting fuel consumption.

When the squad set out once more, a quiet transformation had begun. Each night, Sayo activated the furnace. It no longer relied solely on his father's energy; it "breathed," drawing wisps of natural energy from the surrounding desert.

The results were immediate and visible. His frame filled out with lean, powerful muscle; his ashen complexion turned robust. Most striking was his chakra pool: the bottleneck that had stalled him below Chūnin level shattered. While he wasn't a Jōnin yet, the speed and volume of his chakra extraction were now on an entirely different plane.

Under the desert moon, Sayo clenched his fist, feeling a smoothness in his energy flow he had never known. The upgrade was the bedrock of his dream—to realize a future where he wasn't just surviving the war, but rebuilding the world.
