Bella's POV
My body shook uncontrollably as I sat in that suffocating room. Toby and I had been prisoners here since the night before, trapped behind drawn curtains that blocked out any hint of daylight. My skull felt like it was splitting in two from lack of sleep, and every nerve in my body screamed with exhaustion. The only sounds breaking the oppressive silence were Toby's labored breathing and his soft whimpers that cut through me like knives. When I pressed my palm against his forehead, the heat radiating from his skin made my stomach drop. His fever was getting worse.
Dear God, how was I supposed to handle this? What came next in this nightmare?
I ran my fingers through his damp hair and kissed his burning forehead, my throat constricting with panic. He was so hot to the touch. My eyes swept across our prison - bare walls that seemed to close in on us, a worn couch, a rickety table, and that cursed door with its unyielding lock mocking our captivity.
