Chapter 2 - The Silent Cortex

It was a cold and stormy night on the Carthiane world of New Valeris where Jade stood on a balcony looking over the lifeful city that seemed to never sleep.

This city was full of life as ships flew by the balcony only a few feet away from the balcony. Jade watched as the lights and sounds of the ships flew past her and it caused her short blonde hair to slightly blow due to the force of the ships as the made it past her.

Jade wanted for this night to last forever, but this night would not last forever. No matter what she did when the morning came Jade would be taken from her family who were of the warrior caste and become part of some new covert branch of The Carthiane Empire called The Silent Cortex.

The only thing that Jade was told during The Klitron process was that she would be brought to a new branch of The Carthiane Empire that was going to be used to make a major difference in the war against The Fulkore Collective since they had declared war on us by blowing away a planet and turning it into an active wormhole.

Jade saw the first sunlight of the early morning come across the sky, and Jade let out a loud sigh of depression because while she knew that after she went through The Klitron that she most likely not be a member of the warrior caste like her parents, but she did not think that she had to be part of some branch of the Carthiane Empire that no one had ever even heard of.

It was a very similar lifestyle that her parents had lived while their world was part of The Terran Collective, but after The Terran Collective signed a non-aggression pact and then entered an alliance with The Vordonian Empire everything shifted.

Some of the key systems that were under the control of The Terran Collective broke away because they believed that it was our duty to exterminate all non-Terran life from this galaxy.

The main difference between them was that The Carthiane Empire absorbed liquified Paradisus and they got their natural Terran talents, but some were able to obtain psionic powers as well.

She walked back into the house and saw her pregnant mother who was about seven months through her pregnancy sitting in a couch.

"Mom it is not fair. I want to stay here and be with you when my brother gets here." Jade said in a very upset voice making it clear to her mother that she did not want to go away from her family.

"Jade, you must consider it an honor for the glory of The Carthiane Empire to be a part a new caste. That is a blessing that your father and I never had. We would have given anything to be a part of something so important." She said to her daughter as she rubbed her stomach.

"You still do not understand, I want to stay with you until you have your baby. Then after that I will go and give my all to this new program." Jade told her mother as she set down on the couch.

"Jade you must understand now that you are an adult now that you have gone through The Klitron. You are going to have to make sacrifices for the greater good. We all work for The Carthane Empire and we must put the needs of the community is paid for without question."

Then after a few more minutes of sitting down beside her mother, Jade heard a knock at the front door.

"Well, it seems that it is time for you to go." She said to Jade as soon as the door was knocked on again, but this time it was louder.

Jade got off the couch and made her way to the door knowing that this would change everything because her life as a normal citizen of The Carthiane Empire would be officially over as she knew it the closer that she got to the door.

As Jade opened the door, she saw a pair of men that were wearing a matching set of battle armor that was dark red with a white eagle logo on both shoulder areas.

The only difference that she noticed between the two of them is that the one to her left had a set of three bars on the left side of the front of his body armor. The first two were silver bars, and under them I saw that he had one red bar.

"Jade it is time for you to go. Your new life as a new member of The Silent Cortex is going to begin the moment that you walk out of this door with us." The first man said to her.

"Good luck Jade. I want to wish you luck with your new life. Remember that your father and I are always so proud of you as our daughter". Jade's mom said as she slowly rose to her feet from the couch and made it to where Jade was standing.

Then Jade made it to her mother so that she did not have to go as far.

"I have to say that I will accept this new life that I have been given for father's sake, your sake, and for sake of my unborn sibling". Jade said to her mother before she started to walk out of the house.

"Good to know that you will take you new job as part of The Carthiane Empire my daughter". Jade's mother said as she watched her daughter walk out of the house for what was most likely going to be the last time.

As Jade made it out of the front door, she saw a simple vehicle of transport that had two main sections to it. The front section was for the driver and their bodyguard. The back section of the ship was a simple cube shaped section that only hade two windows on it.

"Get yourself in the back of the transport and you will be transported to the new section of the city that has been recently built for your training." The leader of the two warriors said to Jade as they approached the transport.

When Jade opened the door, she saw that there were two rows of seats against the walls of the transport. Then she stepped into the vehicle and set down in the only seat that was not occupied.

It was when Jade set down that the ship began to fly up into the sky and began to move.

"So, you were chosen as the final person of this batch for the government's little test on us." A very fat man that was sitting beside Jade said to her as she set in the last vacant chair.

"Yes, and if you are part of the competition that I will have to surpass to become this new section of The Carthiane Empire, then I will have one less obstacle to worry about in my path to the top." Jade said in a very condescending tone towards the fat man that had just spoken.

As soon as Jade made her statement of wanting to be at the top of the Carthainians that were going to be part of this new branch of their society everyone stared at her with glares of annoyance as if she had just made enemies of everyone that was on the transport ship.

There was a young man that was tall and muscular with short and wavy brown hair that was loosely fit around his head. This was the only person on the transport who did not stare at Jade with their eyes like daggers.

"Do you really think that you have what it takes to be the best of all of us here?" the silent man asked me as he rose from in his seat with a very confident tone of voice behind all his words as he stood up on the floor as the transport continued to move.

"Are you challenging me?" Jade asked as she stood up out of her chair to meet this man face to face without being afraid.

"If you think that you have want it takes to take me on in a fight we can settle this as soon as the transport ship lands in this new section of the city." He said in a cocky voice to Jade.

"Then we will settle this and I will prove to you that I am more then just talk." Jade said as she confidently set back down in her seat with aa grin on her face.

Jade could not wait to put this man in his place. He did not have any idea as to the level of potential that Jade possessed.

She knew that fighting him was going to be a breeze because of the combat training that both of her parents had put her through would give her a huge advantage against someone that was so cocky.

Would this fight be as easy as Jade thought, or would she end up eating dirt and regretting her cocky urge to fight someone on the first day.
