Chapter 28 - Chapter Twenty-Seven — Return of a Tyrant

The darkness...

Shuddered.

A low, resonant hum rippled through the Sovereign Hall, vibrating the obsidian pillars and sending the floating mana orbs flickering like dying stars. Lira stood frozen at the base of her throne, her pulse hammering in her ears as the crack in reality widened, spilling cold, silver light across the floor.

Eli stepped in front of her instantly, mana flaring around him in a protective arc.

Cael moved to her right, blades of pure energy forming in his hands.

Arienne drifted closer, her spectral form trembling.

Riven's expression sharpened, all traces of their usual calm gone.

And then—

A figure stepped through the crack.

Tall.

Regal.

Wrapped in a cloak of shimmering black and silver that moved like liquid shadow. Their hair was long and pale, their eyes glowing with a cold, ancient brilliance that made the air itself recoil.

The former sovereign.

The one sealed away.

The one the cycle had held back.

The one Lira had unknowingly freed.

They smiled.

It was not a kind smile.

"Ah," the figure said, voice smooth as silk and sharp as broken glass. "My successor."

Lira's breath caught. "Who are you?"

The figure tilted their head. "Names are for the living. But if you insist… I was once called Veylor."

The hall trembled at the name.

Eli stepped forward. "You're not welcome here."

Veylor's smile widened. "And yet here I stand."

Cael's blades brightened. "You were sealed for a reason."

"Yes," Veylor said, eyes gleaming. "Because I dared to reshape the world. Because I saw what the council refused to see. Because I reached for the power they feared."

Their gaze slid to Lira.

"And now you sit on the throne I once claimed."

Lira lifted her chin. "I earned it."

"Oh, I know," Veylor said. "I watched your little test. Quite the spectacle. Painful. Wasteful. Admirable."

Lira's stomach twisted. "You saw the cycle?"

"I felt it," Veylor said. "Every loop. Every death. Every rebirth. You tore down the system that held me prisoner. And for that—"

They bowed their head slightly.

"—I thank you."

The hall fell silent.

Too silent.

Riven stepped forward, cloak swirling. "Veylor. You shouldn't be here."

Veylor's eyes narrowed. "Ah. The stray. The one who refused to kneel."

Riven didn't flinch. "I don't kneel to tyrants."

Veylor's smile sharpened. "Still dramatic, I see."

The air crackled.

Mana currents twisted violently, spiraling around Veylor like a storm. The hall groaned under the pressure, runes flickering, pillars shaking.

Arienne gasped. "Lira—he's drawing from the world's core!"

Lira stepped forward. "Stop."

Veylor looked at her with something like amusement. "You command me?"

"I'm the sovereign now."

"Are you?" Veylor asked softly. "Or are you simply the girl who survived her own spell?"

Lira's jaw tightened. "I broke the cycle."

"Yes," Veylor said. "But breaking is easy. Ruling is not."

The mana storm intensified.

Eli braced himself. "Lira, we need to move."

Cael grabbed her arm. "He's destabilizing the hall."

Riven's voice cut through the chaos. "He's testing you."

Lira froze.

Veylor's eyes gleamed. "Very good, stray. You always did understand me."

The crack behind Veylor widened, spilling more silver light into the hall.

The air grew colder.

The mana currents twisted into violent spirals.

Arienne's voice trembled. "He's opening a rift."

"To where?" Eli demanded.

Veylor answered with a soft, chilling smile.

"To the place I was sealed."

The hall shook violently.

A gust of freezing wind swept through, extinguishing half the mana orbs. Shadows crawled across the floor, reaching toward Lira like grasping hands.

Cael stepped in front of her. "You're not taking her."

Veylor raised a hand.

Cael was thrown across the hall.

"CAEL!" Lira shouted.

Eli lunged forward, but Veylor flicked their wrist and Eli was slammed into a pillar, mana shield shattering.

Arienne rushed toward Lira, spectral form flickering. "You have to run!"

"No," Lira said, voice shaking but firm. "I won't run from him."

Veylor's smile softened. "Good. You'll need that courage."

The rift behind him pulsed, growing larger, brighter, hungrier.

Riven stepped between Lira and Veylor, cloak flaring with power. "You're not touching her."

Veylor's eyes narrowed. "Ah. So you choose a side."

"I choose her," Riven said.

The hall went still.

Veylor's expression shifted—surprise, then amusement, then something darker.

"How quaint."

He raised his hand.

The rift exploded outward.

The hall shattered.

Lira was thrown backward, the throne dissolving beneath her. The world twisted, warped, fractured. She reached out blindly—

"LIRA!"

Eli's voice.

Cael's voice.

Arienne's cry.

Riven's shout.

And then—

A hand grabbed hers.

Not Eli's.

Not Cael's.

Not Riven's.

Serin.

They materialized beside her in a burst of violet light, cloak whipping in the storm.

"Hold on!" Serin shouted.

Lira clung to him as the rift swallowed the hall, the world, everything.

Serin's eyes glowed fiercely.

"I told you," he said, voice shaking with effort, "the rules have changed."

The rift roared.

The world collapsed.

And everything went black.
