Chapter 49 - Chapter 46 The storm and the swarm

"Move!" Alex yelled over the gale, shielding his eyes from the lightning 🌩️ that was getting too bright.

He didn't run toward the jungle as the trees were acting as lightning rods, catching the erratic, sickly bolts of the storm so he led the team along the rocky terrain, scanning the cliff face.

There half-buried under decades of creeping vines and mud was a square slab of grey concrete with a rusted steel door, embossed with a faded 'R', hung slightly off its hinges. An old coastal observation pillbox from the early days of the island's occupation.

Alex grabbed the heavy iron handle and braced his boots against the concrete and pulled, the hinges snapped off entirely, and the heavy door fell inward with a heavy thud.

The inside smelled nasty and was barely ten feet by ten feet.

"Inside.... Now."

Skorupi scuttled in first, hating the water while Clefairy drifted in right after, humming loudly over the thunder. Aron trotted in, immediately sniffing the rusted door frame for loose iron flakes.

Alex turned to the massive purple shape behind him.

"You don't fit in, King," Alex said, pulling the ball. "So rest up."

A red beam absorbed Nidoking and as soon as the poison type vanished, a loud, panicked screech echoed from the doorway.

Elekid had just run into the bunker and it looked frantically around the small, dark room then it looked at Alex's belt and pointed at the Pokéball.

Eleeeee! Kiiiiiiiid! it demanded, stomping its foot, sparks flew from its fists, it wanted the boss back as it wanted to fight something with the boss.

"Sit down," Alex snapped, pulling a glowstick from his pack and cracking it as sickly green light filled the concrete box. "He's asleep and you should do the same, you're bleeding."

It was true, the recoil from the Volt Tackle had bruised the Elekid's ribs, and it had a nasty scrape on its shoulder but Elekid didn't care as it had too much energy.

The ambient static from the storm outside was feeding its Motor Drive, making its muscles twitch and it started pacing the tiny room, jogging in tight circles, throwing rapid-fire shadow jabs at the concrete walls.

Pop-pop-pop..... Its tiny fists cracked against the stone.

Skorupi, who had curled up in the driest corner of the bunker, cracked open one, It valued patience and silence and Elekid was neither.

The yellow gremlin jogged backward, throwing a hook, and accidentally stepped right on the tip of Skorupi's tail.

Skorupi didn't make a sound but it was pissed, It just moved and in a fraction of a second, the purple bug whipped around, its massive pincers snapping shut a millimeter from Elekid's nose, a drop of highly lethal, concentrated toxin dripped from the stinger, sizzling a hole into the concrete floor.

Elekid froze as it crossed its eyes to look at the pincers and then, it grinned.

It raised its fists, electricity crackling between its antennae, fully ready to brawl the scorpion.

"Stop," Alex's voice was cold.

"Skorupi, stand down he's new and Elekid, lower your hands, if you discharge in here, you'll fry all of us."

Skorupi hissed softly, retracting the stinger, and crawled up the wall to hang from the ceiling, away from the idiot.

Elekid looked disappointed as it dropped its hands and looked around for something else to do.

It noticed Clefairy, the pink puffball had found a rusted piece of rebar and was using it to meticulously sweep the dirt floor, humming that same tune it had earlier.

Clefairy stopped sweeping and looked at Elekid, It reached into its fur, pulled out a rusted bottle cap, and held it out.

Gift?

Elekid smacked the bottle cap out of Clefairy's hanf, Clefairy stared at the floor where the cap fell but it didn't look angry as It just slowly floated upside down and began sweeping the ceiling instead.

Alex rubbed his temples.

"I am running a fucking circus," he muttered.

Before he could organize the chaotic roster, a sound drifted through the open doorway, cutting through the heavy rain. It was a high-pitched, echoing chatter, dozens of them.

Alex killed the glowstick instantly and the bunker plunged into darkness.

"Quiet," Alex hissed.

He edged toward the doorway, peering out into the storm, the sky was dark, but lightning flashed, illuminating the jungle.

Hanging upside down from the thick mangrove branches, seeking refuge from the torrential rain, was a massive colony of Golbat. They were large, aggressive, and their massive mouths were lined with razor-sharp teeth designed to drink blood.

One of them dropped from the branch and flapped its leathery wings, catching the scent emanating from the open pillbox.

It shrieked.... a sonar ping that echoed right into the concrete box and the entire colony detached from the trees.

"Incoming guys," Alex barked. He saw the doorway which was only three feet wide.

"Aron! Plug the door!"

The little metal pokemon scrambled forward, planting its heavy feet in the mud right at the entrance as its body glowed silver..... IronDefense. The first three Golbats slammed into the doorway and bit down blindly in the dark.

CRUNCH...

Fangs met tempered steel and the Golbats shrieked in pain, their teeth cracking against Aron's armored shell. Aron just grunted, using Metal Claw to swipe at the fluttering wings, tearing one to shreds.

More bats poured in, trying to squeeze past the steel wall. They were crawling over each other, a writhing mass of blue wings and fangs.

Seeing all this Elekid lit up, Its antennae sparked violently and wound up its arm, the golden sphere of a Volt Tackle forming around its body as it was going to charge the door.

Alex grabbed the Elekid by the scruff of its neck, lifting the little bugger off the ground, the static shocked Alex's glove, numbing his fingers, but he held tight.

"No," Alex commanded, glaring into the wild black eyes. "You don't do that in a hallway or else you'll collapse the roof so do exactly what I say."

He dropped the Elekid and pointed at the puddle of rainwater accumulating outside of Aron's feet, right where the Golbats were stepping to get inside.

"Thunder Shock.....Constant stream into the water, fry the puddle."

Elekid blinked as it looked at the puddle and then grinned, it planted its hands on the wet concrete.

ZAP..... ... ..... Zap..... ....

The Golbats stepping into the puddle seized violently and dropped to the floor, twitching and smoking.

A few smarter Golbats tried to fly over Aron, aiming for the ceiling but they didn't make it.

Duskull, hiding in the darkest corner of the bunker, extended its shadow as the black tendrils shot across the ceiling, grabbing the Golbats by their own shadows and violently slamming them against the concrete.

As they fell, three glowing white needles shot from the darkness. Skorupi, hanging upside down next to Clefairy, sniped the falling targets with perfect precision, pinning them to the walls.

In less than two minutes, the chattering stopped and the only sound was the heavy rain outside.

Alex cracked another glowstick, the doorway was choked with fainted and paralyzed Golbats and Aron was sitting on top of the pile, casually chewing on a piece of a bat's dropped fang and spitting it out with a gag.

Elekid was panting, its fur standing on end, it looked at the pile of bodies and then looked at Alex. It didn't punch the wall this time but gave Alex a sharp, jerky nod of respect..... Good fight.

Alex let out a slow breath, wiping a drop of sweat from his chin.

"Everyone back to your corners," Alex ordered. "We hold here until sunrise."

He leaned against the cold concrete wall, looking at the weird, lethal group of Pokemon he had assembled. They were chaotic, violent, and completely unhinged but as he watched Clefairy float over and offer a paralyzed Golbat a small pebble, Alex had to admit one thing.

They were absolutely fucking effective.
