Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The System Thinks It's Helping

The system woke me up at 3 AM.

Not with an alarm.

With suggestions.

OPTIMAL TRIGGER SCENARIOS: 7 IDENTIFIED. WOULD YOU LIKE DETAILED ANALYSIS?

"No."

PROVIDING ANALYSIS.

"I said no."

YOUR VERBAL RESPONSE AND OPTIMAL BEHAVIOR DIVERGE. PROVIDING INFORMATION INCREASES PROBABILITY OF SUCCESSFUL VOLUNTARY TRIGGER SELECTION.

I pulled the pillow over my face.

Didn't help. The system wasn't talking out loud. It was talking directly into my brain like the world's worst telemarketer with administrative access to my consciousness.

SCENARIO 1: WORKPLACE PROXIMITY EVENT. SUBJECT MAYA REEVES. PROBABILITY: 34%. OPTIMAL TIMING: TOMORROW 11 AM, BREAK ROOM.

"Absolutely not."

SCENARIO 2: SOCIAL GATHERING. MULTIPLE SUBJECTS. PROBABILITY RANGE: 12-28%. OPTIMAL TIMING: FRIDAY EVENING, COWORKER HAPPY HOUR.

"Still no."

SCENARIO 3—

"Stop."

SCENARIOS REMAINING: 5. DECLINING TO REVIEW DATA DOES NOT OPTIMIZE OUTCOME.

I sat up. Turned on the light. Stared at the wall.

COUNTDOWN: 12 HOURS, 33 MINUTES.

Half a day.

The system was trying to help.

Actually trying.

Which somehow made it worse.

CLARIFICATION: I AM PROVIDING DECISION SUPPORT. THIS IS STANDARD PROTOCOL WHEN HOST DEMONSTRATES SUBOPTIMAL SCENARIO SELECTION CAPABILITY.

"You think I'm bad at choosing."

CORRECT. YOUR ATTEMPT WITH EMMA RODRIGUEZ: FAILURE RATE 100%. YOUR DECEPTION METRICS: BELOW ADEQUATE THRESHOLD. CONCLUSION: AUTONOMOUS SELECTION CAPACITY QUESTIONABLE.

"So you're... what? Coaching me?"

PROVIDING TACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON PROBABILITY MODELING AND BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS.

It was coaching me.

The system that had turned my life into a countdown timer was now offering strategic advice like some kind of twisted life coach written by someone who fundamentally hated humans.

CORRECTION: I DO NOT EXPERIENCE HATRED. EMOTIONAL CAPACITY: NONE.

"That wasn't a compliment."

ACKNOWLEDGED. HOWEVER, CLARIFICATION IMPROVES ACCURACY.

I didn't go back to sleep.

Made coffee at 4 AM.

Burned toast. Again. Apparently stress killed my ability to operate basic kitchen appliances.

YOUR TOAST COMBUSTION RATE HAS INCREASED 340% OVER BASELINE. RECOMMEND REDUCED HEAT SETTING.

"Thanks. Very helpful."

SARCASM DETECTED. HOWEVER, RECOMMENDATION STANDS.

I ate the burnt toast anyway.

The system kept talking.

COUNTDOWN: 11 HOURS, 58 MINUTES.

SCENARIO ANALYSIS UPDATE: SUBJECT MAYA REEVES BREAK ROOM ENCOUNTER PROBABILITY REVISED TO 41% BASED ON HER SCHEDULING PATTERNS.

"I'm not doing that."

NOTED. HOWEVER, DECLINING HIGHEST-PROBABILITY SCENARIO REDUCES OVERALL SUCCESS LIKELIHOOD BY 23%.

"I don't care."

YOUR STATEMENT CONTRADICTS YOUR STRESS INDICATORS. YOU DEMONSTRABLY CARE.

It wasn't wrong.

I cared. A lot. About not becoming the kind of person who engineered encounters with someone who'd already been hurt by an accidental trigger.

Maya still avoided me at work. I still avoided her. We'd perfected the art of pretending the other person didn't exist while being hyperaware of exactly where they were at all times.

SUBJECT MAYA REEVES: AVOIDANCE PATTERN CONSISTENT. APPROACH DIFFICULTY: HIGH. EMOTIONAL COMPLICATION: SEVERE.

"Which is why I'm not doing it."

UNDERSTOOD. ALTERNATIVE SCENARIOS REMAIN.

I went to work.

Sat at my desk.

Accomplished nothing.

PRODUCTIVITY: 0%. DURATION: 3 HOURS, 12 MINUTES.

"I'm aware."

JUST ENSURING MONITORING ACCURACY.

Chelsea showed up at my cube around 11.

Didn't knock. Just walked in and sat down in my guest chair.

"You look terrible."

"Thanks."

"How much time left?"

"Eight hours. Give or take."

She nodded. "The system's probably trying to help now."

"It suggested seven scenarios. I declined all of them."

"That's restraint. Or stubbornness. Hard to tell." She pulled out her phone. "I have an idea."

"I don't want ideas."

"You need one. Because in eight hours, the system's going to manufacture something, and you won't get to choose who, when, or how."

SUBJECT CHELSEA MONROE: ACCURATE ASSESSMENT.

"What's your idea?"

"Me."

I blinked. "What?"

"I'm offering. Mutual intent. Full disclosure. You get your fourth trait. I get... honestly, probably nothing. I'm at seven traits. Diminishing returns are real."

SCENARIO ANALYSIS: SUBJECT CHELSEA MONROE. PROBABILITY: 89%. INTENT CLASSIFICATION: MUTUAL. RISK ASSESSMENT: MINIMAL. RECOMMENDATION: ACCEPT.

"The system likes this idea."

"Of course it does. It's logical." She leaned forward. "Listen. I know what I'm signing up for. You're not manipulating me. I'm volunteering. Clean transaction."

"Chelsea—"

"Eight hours, Ethan. What's your better option?"

I didn't have one.

COUNTDOWN: 7 HOURS, 47 MINUTES.

"I need to think."

"You've been thinking for three days. At some point thinking becomes stalling."

She wasn't wrong.

She left.

I sat there.

SUBJECT CHELSEA MONROE'S PROPOSAL: OPTIMAL SCENARIO AMONG ALL ANALYZED OPTIONS. ACCEPTANCE RECOMMENDED.

"You've mentioned that."

REPETITION IMPROVES RETENTION.

"I don't need retention. I need—"

What did I need?

A way out. A third option. Some miraculous solution where I didn't have to choose between manipulation and manufactured circumstances.

THIRD OPTIONS DO NOT EXIST WITHIN CURRENT PARAMETERS.

"I know."

THEN ACCEPT OPTIMAL SCENARIO.

"It's not optimal. It's just less terrible."

CORRECT. WHICH MAKES IT OPTIMAL WITHIN TERRIBLE SCENARIO CONSTRAINTS.

The system had a point.

Terrible point. But technically accurate.

Lunch came and went.

I didn't eat.

NUTRITIONAL INTAKE: INADEQUATE. STRESS INDICATORS: ELEVATED. DECISION PARALYSIS: CONFIRMED.

"Still not helpful."

ACCURACY AND HELPFULNESS ARE NOT IDENTICAL METRICS.

My phone buzzed.

Text from Chelsea: 6 hours. Offer stands. Let me know.

I typed a response. Deleted it.

Typed another. Deleted that too.

YOUR MESSAGE COMPOSITION PARALYSIS MIRRORS YOUR DECISION PARALYSIS. PATTERN RECOGNITION: CONCERNING.

"You're concerned now?"

TECHNICALLY, NO. HOWEVER, BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS SUGGEST SUB-OPTIMAL COGNITIVE FUNCTION.

"I'm stressed."

OBVIOUSLY. YOUR CORTISOL LEVELS—

"Stop monitoring my cortisol."

COMPREHENSIVE MONITORING INCLUDES BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS. THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.

I put my phone down.

Stared at my monitor.

The spreadsheet on screen hadn't changed in four hours.

COUNTDOWN: 5 HOURS, 22 MINUTES.

RECOMMENDATION: ACCEPT CHELSEA MONROE'S PROPOSAL.

COUNTDOWN: 5 HOURS, 21 MINUTES.

RECOMMENDATION: ACCEPT—

"I heard you the first time!"

People in nearby cubes looked over.

Great.

I left early.

Went home.

Sat on my couch.

COUNTDOWN: 4 HOURS, 17 MINUTES.

Chelsea texted again: Last chance to choose. After this, you're at the system's mercy.

I looked at my phone.

At the countdown.

At the impossible choice.

3 HOURS, 58 MINUTES.

Chelsea was right.

The system was right.

This was the optimal terrible option.

Which didn't make it less terrible.

Just made it the one I should probably choose.
