Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Interrogation by Evelyn

Dinner was served by a silent, impeccable staff member. It was simple, perfectly cooked sea bass with fresh asparagus—bland, nutritious, and clearly chosen with a sensitive palate in mind. Abby knew Liam had ensured the menu was "safe" for her, a gesture of protective care that made her feel both furious and terribly indebted.

The conversation began professionally. Abby carefully recounted the details of the Han merger crisis, framing it as a professional challenge she met with strategic brilliance. Evelyn listened intently, occasionally interjecting with a sharp, insightful question that demonstrated a deep understanding of corporate finance.

"And you were entirely alone, dear?" Evelyn asked, stirring her tea. "Liam was gone. You had no high-level support?"

"I managed the team, Evelyn. The structure was sound," Abby replied. "The decision had to be mine, but the data was there."

"Nonsense. The guts had to be yours," Evelyn corrected gently. She looked at Liam, who was silent, watching the exchange. "Liam, you should know that Abby called me on your private line for advice. She was afraid to lose the deal, and she correctly identified me as an unconventional resource."

Liam nodded slowly. "I know, Grandma. We discussed the breach of protocol. She explained her reasoning."

Evelyn leaned forward, placing her elbows on the table. Her voice dropped, signaling the shift from corporate review to personal interrogation. "Abby, when you called, you sounded distraught, far beyond the stress of a ten-figure deal. You spoke of fatigue and a deep-seated fear of failure. Now tell me, not as the Director, but as the woman who felt comfortable enough to call a stranger on her boss's private line: what are you truly afraid of?"

The question was a direct hit to her core. Abby's practiced professional scripts vanished. She could feel the sudden, hard lump of emotion in her throat. She had to answer with a truth that wasn't the truth.

"I'm afraid of being dependent," Abby confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm afraid of relying on someone else's stability. My career is my stability. To lose control of my professional life would be to lose control of everything."

She glanced at Liam, who was watching her with an intense, unwavering focus. He wasn't judging; he was absorbing her pain.

Evelyn smiled gently. "A powerful fear, but a common one for women of your caliber. However, dependency is not a weakness, Abigail. It's an opportunity. You let my grandson down his guard and see your humanity when he needed a crisis to distract him from his own grief. That is a gift you gave him, even if you did it accidentally."

Evelyn reached across the table and placed her hand over Abby's. "You don't have to carry the world alone, dear. Not professionally, and certainly not personally. You're a strong woman, but you look like you're battling a ghost."

Abby felt the prickle of tears behind her eyes. You're battling a ghost—the ghost of a life she was trying to create alone, using the biology of the man sitting opposite her. Evelyn's warmth and intuitive insight were dangerously close to breaking her.

Liam finally spoke, his voice low and protective. "That's enough, Grandma. Abby is still recovering from the stress I put her under. We should talk about something less demanding."

But Evelyn ignored him. She simply squeezed Abby's hand. "Tell him, dear. Tell him what he needs to do to help you stop carrying the world alone. He won't listen to me, but he might listen to the woman he calls his fortress."
