Chapter 6 - Energy

[Jyne] "You can't just come here and use Creation Magic like it's a hobby! You're breaking the world I built!"

I freeze.

The air around me tightens, and I can feel Donny shift beside me. His shell trembles slightly, not from fear, but from the sudden spike of tension in the air. He chuffs once, a low sound that feels like a question.

[Jyne] "You are taking from the world's energy directly and not returning anything!"

She glares at me.

[Jyne] "You're disrupting the balance! The world will break at this rate!"

I stare at her, confusion and guilt mixing together.

[Wright] "Breaking the world?"

Her eyes burn with fury.

[Wright] "I... didn't know."

My voice comes out quiet, almost broken.

[Wright] "I thought this was how it worked here. I thought magic was... just magic."

The words feel inadequate. Hollow.

[Wright] "I'm sorry."

The words come out smaller than I intend, but I mean them.

[Jyne] "You don't understand what you've done."

[Wright] "I know. And I'm sorry." I pause. "I've been using Creation Magic a lot, haven't I?"

Jyne's anger flares, but she doesn't respond immediately. She just watches me, jaw tight.

[Wright] "I'll stop. Of course I will. But... it's very useful."

[Jyne] "Then figure something else out."

[Wright] "Is it only Creation Magic that's a problem?"

Jyne blinks, her anger faltering slightly.

[Wright] "What about my other skills?"

Jyne's expression goes stiff. She watches me carefully, assessing.

[Jyne] "What other skills do you have? Explain."

[Wright] "I'll show you."

I step back and raise my hands. I form a small ball of elemental energy and toss it into the air. It explodes into a harmless burst of fire.

Jyne's eyes narrow, analyzing the action.

[Wright] "Elemental Magic."

Jyne exhales slowly. Relief eases over her face.

[Jyne] "That uses mana from within your body. It doesn't drain the world. Everyone uses it to some degree."

I nod slowly.

[Wright] "So this is fine?"

[Jyne] "Yes. But..." She pauses, studying me. "Your mana pool is far too large. You'll produce far more miasma than a normal being."

I frown.

[Wright] "Magic produces miasma?"

Jyne looks at me, incredulous.

[Jyne] "Yes. It's a byproduct of casting. When you transform mana into an element, not all of it converts cleanly. The remainder becomes miasma. Demons do the opposite. They transform miasma into an element and the remainder becomes mana. Both being helps release mana and miasma into the world, fueling the world with energy that you took!"

Donny's head turns slightly toward the goddess. His eyes narrow, and he gives a low, suspicious churr. He doesn't move, but the shift in his posture tells me he's on alert.

I lean forward, thinking. I cast another small fire spell in my hand and hold it, observing closely. My eyes light up with sudden understanding.

[Wright] "So magic transforms mana into elements. Miasma is what's left behind—like ash from a fire."

I pause, watching the flame flicker.

[Wright] "It looks like only about half the mana fully converts, and the rest becomes miasma."

I stare at the dissipating magic, thinking.

[Wright] "Wait. If miasma is spent mana... and demons can use miasma as their source..."

I look up at Jyne.

[Wright] "Can I do the same? Use miasma as the source instead of mana?"

Jyne's eyes widen slightly.

[Jyne] "That's... yes. It's just a different approach to magic."

[Wright] "So if I can learn how they do it..."

I close my eyes and focus. I've cast enough spells to understand the flow—how mana moves through the body, how it shapes into intent, how it manifests as an element. The pattern is clear in my mind.

Now I just need to reverse it. But first, I need miasma inside my body.

I deliberately cast a small spell internally—not outward, but contained within my mana pool. I transform a portion of my mana, letting it convert incompletely on purpose. Miasma forms inside me. It feels unstable, like introducing smoke into clean air.

Now comes the hard part.

Instead of drawing from pure mana, I pull from the miasma instead. I guide it through the same pathways a spell would normally take, but inversely.

The flow reverses. A darker flame appears in my palm.

I open my eyes.

[Wright] "It works. If I alternate between mana-based and miasma-based magic, I can balance the cycle myself."

I look at Jyne.

[Wright] "Use mana, produce miasma. Use miasma, produce mana."

Jyne stares at me, stunned.

[Jyne] "That... that should be impossible for a human body."

[Wright] "I analyzed the flow. Once you understand the pattern, it's just a matter of reversing it. Demon magic isn't that different from human magic—it's the same process, just inverted."

Jyne is silent for a long moment. Then she exhales slowly, and some of the tension bleeds from her shoulders.

[Jyne] "You realize what you just did, don't you?"

[Wright] "Found a workaround?"

[Jyne] "You essentially became a hybrid. Human and demon magic in one body." She rubs her temples. "This is going to complicate things."

[Wright] "But it won't break your world?"

[Jyne] "No. It won't break my world." Her voice softens slightly. "You... you actually respect what I built."

[Wright] "Of course I do. You designed an elegant system. I just need to work within it instead of around it."

For the first time since arriving, Jyne's expression shifts from anger to something else. Gratitude? Relief? Maybe just exhaustion.

Donny's posture relaxes slightly, though he still doesn't approach. His shell shifts with a quiet scrape against the floor.

[Wright] "Alright. Let me test the other skills too. Just to make sure."

I hold up a wooden stick and activate my Crafting skill, molding it into a simple spoon.

Jyne watches carefully.

[Wright] "Crafting doesn't create anything. It just molds and shapes objects according to my vision. I still need the base materials."

Jyne nods.

[Jyne] "That's acceptable. You're working with what already exists."

I nod.

[Wright] "Good. Now Alchemy. I haven't used this one yet."

Jyne's eyes narrow slightly, watching. I reach for a rock and activate my Alchemy skill.

The rock doesn't just crumble—it responds to my will. The skill lets me see its composition: mostly silica and clay, with trace iron oxide mixed throughout. I focus on separating the components.

The rock breaks apart. Sand and dirt fall away while tiny specks of iron float in the air, drawn together by the skill's guidance. I compress and purify them until they form a small, pure iron ingot.

I hold it up.

[Wright] "Alchemy lets me break down materials and recombine them. It doesn't create anything new—just reorganizes what's already there."

Jyne stares at the ingot for a moment, then nods slowly.

[Jyne] "That's... actually impressive. And yes, it's acceptable. You're still working within the world's existing materials."

I smile.

[Wright] "So I can use Crafting to shape and build."

I look at her, eyes brightening.

[Wright] "And Alchemy to make complex materials from natural ones."

Jyne's mouth opens slightly, then closes. She doesn't speak for a moment. She simply stares. Then she sighs.

[Wright] "So everything is fine now?"

Jyne finally responds, her voice low but genuine.

[Jyne] "Yes. As long as you stop using Creation Magic and stick to these methods, the world will be fine. Even if you make those solar panels through Crafting and Alchemy, you're technically developing them from materials that already exist in this world."

Relief washes over me.

[Wright] "Good. I plan to enjoy a long, relaxing life here."

I gesture toward the cabin.

[Wright] "Since you're here, want to come inside? I can only offer you water, but once we get the farm up and running, we'll have fruits and vegetables aplenty."

Jyne's eye twitches.

She's already busy enough managing an entire world without having to descend and lecture retired gods about proper magic usage. But here I am, completely unbothered, inviting her to stay for a meal. She stares at me for a long moment.

Then, despite herself, a small, tired smile tugs at the corner of her mouth.

[Jyne] "You're impossible."

[Wright] "I've been told that before."

She sighs, but the anger has drained away completely.

[Jyne] "Fine. But I need to return soon."

I grin and step aside, gesturing for her to enter. Donny edges cautiously toward the corner, still wary but no longer trembling.

And for the first time since she arrived, the air feels lighter.
