Chapter 56 - Cinderwell Springs

The interior is stunning. The main hall has high ceilings supported by dark wooden beams carved with flowing patterns. The floor is polished stone in deep grays and blacks, shot through with veins of red crystal that glow faintly from within. Large windows let in natural light, supplemented by floating orbs of contained flame that hover near the ceiling, casting warm illumination without smoke or heat.

The furniture is a mix of low seating areas with plush cushions in deep reds and blacks, and taller chairs arranged around tables of dark wood. Decorative screens carved from volcanic glass separate different sections of the space, creating areas for privacy while maintaining an open feel.

Plants grow in large ceramic pots, their dark leaves and bright flowers adding life to the space. The air smells faintly of minerals and jasmine.

[Vesper] "Finally! A place worthy of a proper rest."

She immediately flops onto one of the cushioned seating areas, sprawling across it without any sense of decorum.

[Eldrin] "Vesper, we haven't even been shown to our rooms yet."

[Vesper] "This is my room now."

[Therys] "I'm afraid those seats are for general use, but I assure you the beds in your accommodations are far more comfortable."

Madame Therys' tone is polite but firm. Vesper groans but gets up, trailing after the group as we continue deeper into the inn.

The corridor we enter is just as beautifully appointed as the main hall. Paintings of dramatic volcanic landscapes and serene hot spring scenes line the walls, lit by the same floating flame orbs that cast everything in warm, welcoming light.

[Therys] "We offer a variety of massage, facial, and body treatment services for our guests. If you're interested, please ask any of our staff to schedule an appointment. I particularly recommend the Leywarmed Stone Alignment massage and the Highland Herb Cocoon body treatments. Both are exclusive to Luminara, as the materials can only be found here."

[Aiko] "Those sound wonderful! We should definitely try them."

[Yuki] "They both sound really relaxing."

We pass several guest rooms, each with heavy wooden doors carved with unique designs. Then the corridor widens, and the temperature rises noticeably as we approach the bathing area.

The hot springs section is breathtaking.

The moment we step inside, the space opens up dramatically. Multiple pools of varying sizes are carved directly into the volcanic stone, their edges smoothed and refined while maintaining their natural, organic shapes. Steam rises from the crystal-clear water in gentle, hypnotic curls. The largest pools could easily accommodate a dozen people, while smaller alcoves offer more intimate settings.

Above us, the ceiling is partially open to the sky, though sections of enchanted glass maintain the warmth while letting in natural sunlight. The light filters through the steam, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Plants thrive in the humid environment, adapted to the volcanic soil in carefully placed arrangements around the pools.

The dark stone walls are carved with flowing patterns that seem to shift and move in the wavering steam. Privacy screens of carved wood and frosted glass stand ready to be positioned wherever guests want them. The lighting here is softer, more ambient, and the constant sound of water flowing through connecting channels between the pools creates a soothing, meditative backdrop.

[Therys] "Each suite and room has access to private bathing areas, but these communal spaces are also available for your use. The water is naturally heated by volcanic activity and contains minerals beneficial for health and relaxation."

She guides us along a path that winds between the pools, gesturing to different sections as we walk.

[Therys] "We have pools of varying temperatures to suit different preferences. The hottest are here, along the inner wall where the volcanic heat is strongest. The cooler pools are toward the outer edge."

She indicates a pool set slightly apart from the others. Unlike the rest, this one produces almost no steam, and the water has an almost crystalline clarity with a faint bluish tint.

[Therys] "That's one of our Glacierwake Pools. The water comes from ice-fed springs in the northern mountains. It delivers quite a bracing shock that sharpens the senses and strengthens the body. Many guests use it as a cold plunge, alternating between hot and cold for circulation benefits."

[Yuki] "This is incredible! I can't wait to try it!"

[Takeshi] "The pools look amazing. I bet they're perfect after all that training we've been doing."

He's already eyeing the hottest pools with obvious interest.

[Aiko] "The minerals must be really good for the skin. Look how clear the water is!"

Ignatia, still in her small form on Yuki's shoulder, peers at the various pools with interest. Her golden eyes take in the hot springs, then the Glacierwake Pool.

[Ignatia] "Hot and cold. What an interesting and novel idea."

It's impressive, all of it. The thoughtful design, the careful execution, the attention paid to creating spaces that can serve both groups and individuals seeking solitude.

Madame Therys continues the tour, leading us through a doorway that connects to adjacent facilities. The transition is seamless. The same volcanic stone, the same aesthetic, but the purpose shifts from bathing to other forms of relaxation and treatment.

[Therys] "Beyond the pools, we have several specialized treatment rooms."

She opens a door to reveal a chamber lined with smooth, dark stones that emit a gentle, steady warmth. The moment I step inside, I feel the heat penetrating deep without being overwhelming. It's different from the surface heat of the pools. This goes deeper, reaching into muscles and bones.

[Therys] "Our Sunstone Heat Chamber. The stones are runed to emit steady, penetrating warmth that reaches the body's core without overwhelming heat. Excellent for releasing deep muscle tension."

She closes that door and opens the next. Immediately, fragrant steam billows out. The scent is herbal, clean, with notes of eucalyptus and something else I can't quite identify. It's almost medicinal but in a pleasant, soothing way.

[Therys] "The Mistveil Grottos. Herb-scented steam infused with cleansing magic clears the lungs and quiets the mind. Very popular with travelers who've been on the road."

[Liora] "The herbs are locally sourced?"

[Therys] "From the mountain valleys, yes. Our herbalists harvest them specifically for the grottos."

The final rooms Madame Therys shows us are different from the others. The moment we step through the doorway, something shifts. The ambient noise from the rest of the inn disappears completely. The silence is profound but not uncomfortable. It's peaceful, like being wrapped in soft cotton.

The chambers themselves are simple but elegant. Comfortable lounges, soft lighting, minimal decoration. The air feels perfectly comfortable, though I realize I can't quite pin down the temperature. It's just... right.

[Therys] "Our Stillwind Sanctuaries. These serene lounges are warded against noise, with enchantments that subtly adjust temperature, lighting, and scent to suit each guest. Perfect for meditation or simply resting in complete peace."

Seraphina steps further into the room, her eyes narrowing slightly as she examines the space with professional interest.

[Seraphina] "Remarkable. The warding is so subtle I barely noticed it engaging."

Vesper, who had been half-asleep on her feet for most of the tour, suddenly perks up. She moves around the room, her hands outstretched, fingers twitching slightly as if feeling for something invisible.

[Vesper] "Wait. This is layered. Multiple enchantments working in concert."

[Therys] "Our enchanters take great pride in their work."

[Vesper] "They should. This is sophisticated. The noise dampening alone would be tricky, but to integrate the environmental adjustments without interference..."

She traces a finger along the wall, then the doorframe, her dark indigo eyes sharp and focused for the first time since we arrived.

[Vesper] "The anchoring points are distributed evenly. Not centralized. Smart. Prevents magical dead zones."

[Seraphina] "And the transition threshold at the doorway is seamless. No jarring sensation when the wards engage or disengage."

[Vesper] "Exactly. That's the hard part. Most enchanters can create powerful wards, but smooth transitions? That takes real skill."

The two of them are circling the room now, examining different aspects of the enchantment work with genuine fascination.

[Vesper] "Do you know who designed this? I'd like to study their technique."

[Therys] "Our head enchanter would be happy to discuss their work. I can arrange an introduction if you're interested."

[Vesper] "Yes. Definitely yes."

She sounds more awake than she has all day.

We leave the Stillwind Sanctuaries, though Vesper keeps glancing back at them. Madame Therys leads us through another corridor to where the guest accommodations are located. The transition from the spa facilities to the residential wing is marked by a subtle change in decoration. The volcanic stone remains, but here it's complemented by more wood, more textiles, creating a warmer, more intimate atmosphere.

[Therys] "We have prepared two grand suites and individual rooms for your party."

She stops at a large door near the end of the hallway. The wood is dark and beautifully carved with intricate patterns of flames and flowing water intertwining.

[Therys] "This is the first suite."

She opens the door to reveal a spacious room that's somehow both grand and inviting. The main area is large, with comfortable seating arranged near floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the city and the mountains beyond. A low table of dark wood sits in the center, already set with an elegant tea service. The floor is covered in thick woven rugs in deep colors that complement the volcanic stone. Decorative screens provide areas of privacy without making the space feel closed off.

Through one door, I can see a separate bedroom with a bed that looks absurdly comfortable. Another door opens to a private bathing area where steam rises from a personal hot spring pool built directly into the floor.

[Therys] "For you, Wright."

[Wright] "Me? This is incredible. Thank you."

I step inside to get a better look. The private hot spring catches my eye immediately. The pool is built into the floor, surrounded by natural stone that's been polished smooth. Steam rises invitingly from the surface. The water is so clear I can see all the way to the bottom, where more of those red crystals are embedded in the stone, glowing softly and casting rippling light across the ceiling.

She shows Jyne to an identical suite nearby. Jyne mentions that she won't be staying overnight. She plans to relax for the day and return to the divine realm tonight. Busy as always, even on vacation.

Madame Therys doesn't even blink at the casual mention of divinity.

[Therys] "Since the whole inn has been rented, you are free to choose any rooms. Chancellor Velira instructed that Wright is an honored guest and should be given one of the suites, while Demon Lord Kaelith informed me earlier that the Goddess was with your party, so I assumed the other suite should go to her."

She gestures down the hallway where more doors line both sides.

[Therys] "The remaining rooms are all available for your group to choose from."

She leads us along, opening doors to show us the options. Each room is well-appointed, smaller than the suites but still comfortable and elegant. They come in both one-bed and two-bed arrangements, all decorated in the same style of volcanic stone, dark wood, warm textiles, soft lighting. The kids are absolutely delighted, already excitedly planning which pools to try first and debating the best order to experience the different facilities.

The room assignments are decided quickly. Takeshi and Eldrin choose to have their own rooms. Sylphaeris, Liora, Vesper, Aiko, and Yuki want to room together and will share the second suite. Yuki's familiars will room there as well.

[Therys] "I'll arrange for additional beds to be delivered to the suite to accommodate everyone comfortably."

[Aiko] "Thank you so much! This is wonderful."

Now that's hospitality. No wonder this place is the best inn in Luminara.

Lucien and Seraphina will share a room, treating this chance as a romantic getaway. I offer my suite for them since I don't really need such a large room by myself, but they flatly refuse.

[Seraphina] "Nonsense. You're the honored guest. Besides, your suite can serve as a gathering spot for everyone."

I relent. She's probably right about the gathering spot.

As we're finalizing the arrangements, Takeshi glances at Lucien and Seraphina with what looks like genuine concern.

[Takeshi] "You sure you're okay sharing a room with Lucien, Seraphina? He snores pretty loud."

There's a brief pause. Seraphina looks genuinely puzzled.

[Seraphina] "Does he? I haven't noticed in all these years."

I blink. How is that possible? His snoring when we visited the dungeon was legendary.

[Lucien] "See? I don't snore."

He sounds vindicated.

[Wright, Sylphaeris, Takeshi, Aiko] "You do!"

[Seraphina] "Perhaps I sleep too deeply to notice."

She says it with such casual certainty that the matter seems settled in her mind. Lucien looks quite pleased with this explanation.

Once everyone is settled into their accommodations and has had a chance to drop off their belongings, Madame Therys leads us back to my suite. The main room has been transformed in our absence. Where there was just a simple tea service before, the low table is now laden with an elaborate spread of dishes.

Grilled cuts of meat with a dark, savory glaze are arranged on plates of dark ceramic. Bowls of soup with a rich, clear broth contain vegetables and what looks like seafood. Rice is served in individual bowls, each grain perfectly cooked. Pickled vegetables in various colors are arranged artfully on small dishes. Grilled fish with crispy skin releases aromatic steam. Small plates hold delicate items that look similar to dumplings, filled with seasoned meat and vegetables.

Everything is presented beautifully, each dish placed with obvious care. The food smells incredible. A mix of savory, sweet, and umami flavors that makes my stomach remind me how long it's been since breakfast.

[Therys] "We prepared lunch for your arrival. Please, enjoy."

[Wright] "This looks wonderful. Thank you."

I was planning to use the bentos I made this morning, but this is already here. Oh well, those can be used for lunch another time.

Everyone settles around the table, finding spots on the cushions and floor seating. The atmosphere is relaxed, the stress of travel and dramatic arrivals finally fading. We start eating, and the food is as good as it looks. The flavors are complex and well-balanced, each dish complementing the others.

[Yuki] "This is amazing!"

She's already reached for a second helping of the dumplings.

[Takeshi] "Everything is so good. I didn't realize how hungry I was."

[Aiko] "The fish is perfectly cooked. And these pickled vegetables are delicious."

She passes a dish to Yuki, who accepts it gratefully.

[Seraphina] "The quality is exceptional. I'm impressed."

She takes another bite of the grilled meat, savoring it with obvious appreciation.

[Liora] "The presentation alone is worthy of praise, but the taste exceeds even that."

[Eldrin] "Demon cuisine has always been underappreciated. This is a fine example of their culinary traditions."

[Lucien] "Indeed. The balance of flavors is masterful."

Vesper is already on her third helping, eating with obvious enjoyment.

Ignatia has her own small plate, carefully portioned. She eats delicately, though I notice her glancing at Jyne every few bites, as if still processing the reality of dining with the Goddess.

Snow hovers near Yuki, landing occasionally on her shoulder to receive tiny pieces of fish that Yuki offers her. Her wings create little patterns of ice crystals in the air with each movement.

Umbra has curled up near Yuki's cushion, his sleek black form almost invisible in the shadow cast by the table. Occasionally, a piece of meat disappears from Yuki's plate, teleporting the short distance to where he waits. His blue gem glows softly each time.

[Yuki] "Umbra, I can see you, you know."

The shadow carbuncle's gem flickers, which I'm pretty sure is his version of looking innocent.

Jyne herself seems more relaxed. She's savoring the serene atmosphere, her usual divine composure softened. The tension that's been present in her shoulders since we started this trip has finally eased.

[Jyne] "Mmm."

A small smile plays at the corners of her mouth.
