Chapter 57 - Vacation

Lunch winds down and the conversation drifts to what everyone wants to do next.

[Takeshi] "I'm definitely hitting the hot springs first. The hottest one."

[Yuki] "I want to try the Glacierwake Pool. And maybe alternate between hot and cold like Madame Therys suggested."

[Aiko] "That sounds fun! Let's do it together."

Snow buzzes around Yuki's shoulder, her wings leaving tiny frost patterns as if chiming in.

[Liora] "I'd like to visit the Mistveil Grottos. The herb-infused steam sounds wonderful for meditation."

[Eldrin] "I'll join you. A peaceful session sounds ideal after all the traveling."

[Lucien] "Seraphina and I will explore the pools at our own pace."

He gives her a meaningful look. She smiles back.

[Seraphina] "A private soak sounds perfect."

[Sylphaeris] "I'm going to check out everything! The whole inn!"

She's already floating toward the door, eager to explore.

[Vesper] "I'm getting that massage. The Leywarmed Stone one."

[Eldrin] "Good choice. You could use some relaxation."

[Vesper] "And then I'm taking a nap in the Stillwind Sanctuaries. And then another massage. And then—"

[Eldrin] "We understand."

[Wright] "I'll wander around and try different things. See you all later."

The group disperses, heading off to their chosen activities. I get ready and make my way to the hot springs first, wanting to experience what all the excitement is about.

The communal bathing area is just as impressive as it was during the tour. I pick one of the medium-sized pools, not too hot, not too cool. The moment I sink in, I understand the appeal. The heat seeps into my muscles, releasing tension I didn't even know I was carrying. The minerals in the water leave my skin feeling different, smoother.

The view from the pool is spectacular. Through the enchanted glass ceiling, the mountains rise in the distance, peaks still capped with snow. The city of Luminara spreads below, steam curling up from various points throughout the streets.

[Takeshi] "This is amazing!"

I turn to see the kids entering the bathing area. Takeshi heads straight for one of the hottest pools, sinking in with a satisfied groan.

[Takeshi] "Oh yeah. This is exactly what I needed after all that training."

[Yuki] "Don't stay in too long. We're supposed to try the cold pool too."

[Aiko] "The view is incredible! Look at the mountains!"

She's already in a nearby pool, leaning back against the edge with her eyes closed.

Snow hovers above the water, occasionally dipping down to touch the surface with her tiny legs before zipping back up. Umbra has found a shadowy corner near the pools and curled up there. Ignatia perches on the edge of Yuki's chosen pool, peering at the water with clear disappointment.

[Ignatia] "This is barely warm. You call this a hot spring?"

[Yuki] "It's supposed to be relaxing, not scalding."

[Ignatia] "I prefer magma. This is tepid at best."

[Yuki] "Well, they don't have a magma pool, so this will have to do."

I soak for a while longer, listening to the kids chat about their dungeon experiences and training progress. It's nice seeing them so relaxed.

After a good soak, I decide to try the temperature contrast everyone keeps mentioning. I make my way to the Glacierwake Pool.

The water looks deceptively calm, only a faint bluish tint hinting that it's different from the others. I brace myself and step in.

Cold doesn't quite cover it.

It's like being dunked in liquid ice. Every nerve fires at once. My breath catches and for a moment I genuinely consider just getting right back out.

But then something shifts. The initial shock fades and what's left is... invigorating. Sharp. Clarifying. My mind feels clearer, my body more alert.

[Yuki] "Wright! You're trying it too!"

She's already in the pool, looking far more comfortable than I feel.

[Yuki] "The trick is to not think about it. Just get in all at once."

[Wright] "I think I'm past that point."

[Takeshi] "It's intense, right? But in a good way."

He's in the pool too, keeping his movements minimal.

[Aiko] "I can only stay in for a few minutes at a time. Then I have to go back to the hot pool."

[Yuki] "That's the whole point. The contrast is what makes it work."

We spend some time alternating between hot and cold. She's right. The hot feels hotter after the cold, and the cold hits harder after the heat. Both experiences become something else entirely.

Ignatia watches from the poolside, unmoved.

[Ignatia] "This seems unnecessarily extreme. Surely one temperature would suffice."

[Yuki] "You should try it."

[Ignatia] "I absolutely should not."

After the pools, I try the Sunstone Heat Chamber. The dry heat is different from the wet heat of the springs. It goes deeper, reaching into bone. I can feel the runed stones at work, warmth spreading evenly through every part of my body.

[Liora] "Wright. I didn't expect to see you here."

She's seated on one of the benches, completely at ease with the heat.

[Eldrin] "We finished our session in the Mistveil Grottos and thought we'd try this next."

[Wright] "How was it?"

[Liora] "Wonderful. The herbs were perfectly balanced and the cleansing magic was subtle but effective. Very restorative."

[Eldrin] "I feel more refreshed than I have in months. This inn truly lives up to its reputation."

[Wright] "The heat here is something else."

[Eldrin] "The rune work is exceptional. I can feel how evenly distributed the warmth is. No hot spots, no cold spots. Masterful enchanting."

We sit in comfortable silence, letting the heat do its work. It's meditative in its own way, different from the activity of the pools.

After I've had enough of the dry heat, I decide to try one of the treatments Madame Therys mentioned. The Highland Herb Cocoon sounds interesting.

The treatment room is quiet and dim. A demon woman with kind eyes guides me through the process. She wrap in cloths soaked in warm herbal preparations, then cocoons me in soft blankets. The herbs smell earthy and faintly sweet.

I close my eyes. The treatment is incredibly relaxing. The herbs warm my skin, and the cocoon effect makes me feel completely enveloped in comfort.

[Sylphaeris] "Oh! Wright! You're getting the herb treatment too?"

I open my eyes to see her floating near the ceiling of the treatment room, looking down at me with an amused expression.

[Sylphaeris] "You look like a very comfortable caterpillar."

[Wright] "I feel like one too."

[Sylphaeris] "I just finished the same treatment. My whole body feels like it's glowing."

She does look particularly radiant, shimmering more than usual.

[Sylphaeris] "I tried everything. The pools, the grottos, the heat chamber, this. Everything! This inn is incredible. I can see why Demon Lord Kaelith was so proud of it."

[Wright] "Found any favorites?"

[Sylphaeris] "The Stillwind Sanctuaries are fascinating. The enchantment work is so sophisticated. But honestly, the pools are probably my favorite. Something about soaking in hot water while looking at the mountains that's just... perfect."

[Wright] "The view is pretty spectacular."

[Sylphaeris] "Jyne's in the Stillwind Sanctuaries right now, by the way. I peeked in earlier. She looked so peaceful. I think this vacation is exactly what she needed."

We chat while the herb treatment runs its course. Sylphaeris tells me about every pool she tried, the temperature combinations she tested, and her theories about the enchantments in the Sanctuaries.

Eventually, the treatment ends. The staff member helps me out of the cocoon and provides warm towels. My skin feels amazing, soft and refreshed.

I decide to visit the Stillwind Sanctuaries next. After all the heat and activity, quiet sounds exactly right.

The moment I step through the doorway, silence envelops me. It's profound. No water, no voices, nothing. Just stillness.

Jyne is here, settled on one of the lounges, eyes closed, body still. She looks more relaxed than I've seen her in... well, in a very long time.

She opens her eyes before I reach her.

[Jyne] "Wright! I didn't hear you coming."

[Wright] "The noise suppression must work in a radius around each person."

[Jyne] "Apparently so. I couldn't sense anything until you got close."

I settle onto a nearby lounge. The enchantments immediately adjust the temperature and lighting to my preference. It's subtle but noticeable.

[Wright] "Are you able to unwind?"

[Jyne] "Yes. The hot spring was amazing."

A small smile crosses her face.

[Jyne] "Even though I can't feel the water through this wooden body, just being there was enough. Watching the steam rise, looking at the mountains... it was exactly what I needed."

[Wright] "The view is definitely one of the biggest highlights while soaking."

[Jyne] "It really is."

She goes quiet for a moment, then looks at me.

[Jyne] "How are you enjoying the world? Living as you do now?"

[Wright] "It's fun. Interesting."

[Jyne] "What's it like? Being mortal, I mean."

I consider the question. It's something I've thought about but never really put into words.

[Wright] "It was an adjustment at first, but now it's just normal. It's strange though. Ever since I was reincarnated, I've kept my memories, but I know I haven't kept all of them. It seems impossible to cram all of it into a mortal vessel."

[Jyne] "You've been around since the beginning of time itself. It's definitely not possible to remember everything in a mortal body. I'm impressed Caelum, Nyx, and Lysandra managed to preserve as much as they did."

[Wright] "I still remember when we first met. You were a young god, newly awakened to divinity, working on your first world."

Jyne's expression shifts to embarrassment.

[Jyne] "Please don't remind me. I was so overeager back then. Everything had to be perfect, every detail exactly right. I must have redone that world a dozen times."

[Wright] "You've grown a lot since then."

[Jyne] "I'd like to think so. But I've always appreciated your advice. Even when I was too stubborn to admit it at the time."

We sit in comfortable silence for a while. The Sanctuaries live up to their name. The peace here is different from the peace of the hot springs. This is silence, stillness, a complete absence of distraction.

[Jyne] "How long are you going to continue like this? Living as a mortal?"

[Wright] "I don't know."

[Jyne] "You don't know?"

[Wright] "I don't know a lot of things anymore. And that feeling is refreshing. Not knowing, after knowing everything for so long... it feels liberating. Plus, there are so many things I still want to do."

Jyne studies my face, something like wonder flickering in her deep blue eyes. At their center, a faint yellow glow burns softly.

[Jyne] "I've known you for a long time. This is the first time I've seen you genuinely excited."

[Wright] "Is it?"

[Jyne] "Yes. You always seemed content, but never excited. Never... alive like this."

She leans back.

[Jyne] "Maybe you're on to something. Maybe all gods should try living as mortals for a while. It could be a nice vacation."

We both laugh at that.

[Jyne] "Can you imagine? The entire pantheon trying to figure out mortal life. It would be chaos."

[Wright] "Complete chaos."

The conversation flows easily after that, wandering from topic to topic. It's nice. No divine responsibilities, no crises. Just two old friends enjoying each other's company in a peaceful, serene atmosphere.

Eventually we make our way back to my suite. The sun is setting, casting warm golden light through the windows. Several people are already sprawled across the seating areas, thoroughly relaxed.

Yuki and the other girls from the shared suite arrive shortly after, but something's off. Yuki is dragging Ignatia into the room and Sylphaeris looks genuinely irritated.

[Wright] "What's wrong?"

[Yuki] "Ignatia received word from her Spirit Queen. Aethra."

[Wright] "Word?"

[Yuki] "Well, not word exactly. More like... whining and complaints."

Ignatia's small form hunches with embarrassment.

[Ignatia] "My apologies. The Spirit Queen has been... persistent."

[Yuki] "Apparently Aethra wanted to join the trip, but when she heard Goddess Jyne was here, she got torn between coming and risking getting yelled at, or staying home and missing out. She's been sending Ignatia constant messages about it."

[Sylphaeris] "CONSTANT. Messages. It's been driving Ignatia crazy, and when Ignatia gets agitated, Yuki feels it through the taming bond."

[Yuki] "So I figured she should just come. I wanted to check with you first though, since it's your vacation too."

[Wright] "I don't really mind. There are plenty of rooms. It's not like it's too crowded or anything."

Jyne, however, looks perturbed. Her fingers tap against her arm.

[Jyne] "The other Spirit Kings and Queens are observing. If Aethra comes, all of them will want to join."

Sylphaeris nods vigorously, her usual playfulness gone.

[Wright] "But it's bothering Ignatia and Yuki. And there's plenty of room. What's the big deal?"

Jyne lets out a long, weary sigh.

[Jyne] "Fine. FINE. But I'm not responsible for what happens next."

The words barely leave her mouth.

The shadows in the corner deepen and ripple. A figure steps out of the darkness like walking through a doorway. Nocturna, the Spirit Queen of Darkness, emerges with quiet grace.

A flame orb near the ceiling flares brilliant white, growing brighter and brighter until the light beams in every direction. Luminor, the Spirit King of Light, materializes at its center.

The air goes humid. Moisture condenses rapidly, pooling on the floor before rising and taking shape. The Spirit Queen of Water steps forward, her form still trailing mist.

Another orb burns hotter, then bursts in a shower of sparks. The flames spiral into a vortex and compress. Aethra, the Spirit Queen of Fire, appears in a burst of heat and light, looking both thrilled and nervous at once.

The floor trembles. Stone and earth rise like liquid, hardening as they take shape. The Spirit King of Earth forms from the very foundation of the building, solid and still.

The room, which had felt spacious moments ago, suddenly feels very crowded.

Everyone stares at the five newly arrived Spirit Kings and Queens.

[Jyne] "I told you."
