CHAPTER 1 — The Enemy in a Billionaire's Suit

Zara Cole did not come back for closure.

She came back to end something.

The city greeted her like it always had — with glass towers that scraped the sky and men in tailored suits who ruled from above. From the outside, everything still looked clean. Powerful. Untouchable.

She knew better now.

Five years ago, she had been in love with Alexander Cross.

Not the billionaire CEO the world worshipped today.

Not the heir to a ruthless corporate empire.

Just Alex — the man who once held her hand on fire escapes and promised her he would never choose money over her.

Three weeks later, he stood in front of cameras and announced his engagement to another woman.

And Zara learned the cost of loving someone born into power.

Now she stood in the lobby of Cross Industries, heels clicking against marble floors that reflected the woman she had become — sharper, colder, no longer naïve enough to believe love was protection.

She wasn't here as the girl he betrayed.

She was here as the investigator hired to expose him.

The elevator carried her to the top floor where men decided the fate of cities. Her reflection stared back at her — eyes steady, jaw set.

You are not here for him.

You are here for justice.

The boardroom doors opened.

And there he was.

Alexander Cross stood at the head of the table, commanding the room without raising his voice. His presence alone silenced men twice his age. Power had shaped him — sharpened his features, cooled his gaze, wrapped him in an authority that once would have intimidated her.

Now it only angered her.

Their eyes met.

For one second, the billionaire mask slipped.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But Zara did.

Because she had once loved the man behind it.

"Ms. Cole," Alexander said, his voice steady but lower than necessary. "Welcome to Cross Industries."

She smiled — slow, dangerous.

"I'm not here to admire the view, Mr. Cross. I'm here to ask questions you've avoided for years."

The boardroom stiffened.

She took her seat across from him, opening her file with deliberate calm.

For the next hour, she dismantled him professionally.

Shell companies. Offshore accounts. Political leverage. Every move Cross Industries had buried under luxury and silence — she dragged into daylight.

Alexander countered with legal polish and corporate charm.

But beneath it all, tension burned.

Not sexual yet.

Not tender.

Just raw history screaming beneath every word.

After the meeting adjourned, Zara gathered her files and headed for the door.

"Zara."

His voice stopped her.

Not "Ms. Cole."

Not "Investigator."

Zara.

She turned slowly. "We're not on first-name terms."

"We were once."

"That was before you chose a boardroom over me."

A muscle jumped in his jaw. "You don't know what I chose."

"I know you walked away."

"No," he said quietly. "I was pushed."

She laughed — bitter. "Save it. I'm not the girl you left behind."

She walked out before he could say more.

But the truth followed her.

Because Alexander Cross had never stopped loving her.

And he had never forgiven himself.

As Zara stepped into the elevator, her phone buzzed.

UNKNOWN NUMBER:

If you think destroying me will heal you, do it. But don't pretend you don't still feel this too.

Her breath caught.

She didn't need to ask who sent it.

For the first time since returning, fear replaced confidence.

Because revenge was easy.

Facing the man who once owned her heart?

That was dangerous.

She stared at the message longer than she wanted to admit.

She typed back.

ZARA:

You don't get to rewrite what you did to me.

ALEXANDER:

No. But I'll spend the rest of my life proving why I did it.

Her heart betrayed her before her pride could stop it.

Outside her hotel, a black car idled.

Alexander watched from the back seat, jaw clenched.

He had lost her once.

He would chase her back — even if it meant burning everything he built.
