Chapter 36 - Sugou Nobuyuki, Devoured and Killed

Stepping into the room of the middle school girl, Eto Yoshimura, Hiro glanced around.

The room was unexpectedly tidy.

It didn't match her unkempt appearance at all.

Noticing his gaze, a mischievous smile crept onto Eto Yoshimura's face.

"Surprised? Doesn't it feel a little too neat compared to how I look?"

"It does." Hiro nodded calmly, looking down at her from his slight height advantage.

"I thought it would be even messier than my room."

"Since you can keep your room clean, why not dress yourself properly?" he added.

"It's a waste of a good face."

"Hmm?" Eto Yoshimura raised an eyebrow.

"Praising other girls in front of your girlfriend-young man, are you sure that's okay?"

She led them to a small square table and shot a teasing glance at Asuna.

"Girlfriend or anything like that-Hiro-kun and I aren't that kind of relationship yet~~"

Asuna blushed and tried to weakly refute it.

Eto Yoshimura ignored her and winked at Hiro several times.

The meaning was obvious.

No need to hide it. I already know.

You know? You know what?

Hiro rolled his eyes.

He had met her parents, sure, but it really wasn't like that.

Eto Yoshimura sat cross-legged across from them. Asuna sat to Hiro's left.

In front of each of them was a steaming cup of coffee.

"These are the coffees you ordered earlier. Dad asked Kaya-nee to bring them up."

Straight to her room...

How did old man Yoshimura come up with that?

Pure intuition?

Hiro glanced at the coffee, curiosity flickering.

"Asuna-san," Eto Yoshimura said, turning her head slightly, "when you're at home, does Mikan ever mention my name? How does she describe me?"

"Yes." Asuna nodded gently.

"When she talks about school, Mikan often mentions 'Eto.' She says you're petite and cute, really bad at dressing yourself, and that your family runs a coffee shop."

She smiled faintly.

But she never mentioned your surname.

Asuna kept that thought to herself.

Otherwise, she wouldn't have drawn a complete blank when Hiro mentioned "Manager Yoshimura."

Even in Japan, "Yoshimura" wasn't a common surname.

If Mikan had said it even once, Asuna was certain she would remember.

But she hadn't.

Not even once.

"That's all?" Eto Yoshimura asked, visibly surprised.

"Nothing else?"

"Hmm..." Asuna tilted her head, thought for a moment, then shook it.

"That's all. The rest were just small things that happened between you two at school."

"..."

Eto Yoshimura fell silent.

The surprise on her face didn't fade.

Seeing this, Hiro's thoughts clicked into place.

So that's it.

Eto had assumed Asuna already knew her ghoul identity.

Probably through Mikan.

But she didn't.

The atmosphere stiffened noticeably.

Asuna sensed the change and felt slightly awkward, thinking she might have said something wrong.

But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't recall any further descriptions of Eto from her sister.

At most...

A hidden large-bust attribute?

Asuna instinctively glanced at Eto's figure.

Then gave up on the thought.

Eto wasn't more endowed than her.

Adding that would just look like provocation.

"Eto," Hiro spoke up at the right moment, breaking the silence.

"Have you run into anything recently? I feel like you've... changed a bit."

"Changed?" Eto looked down at herself, puzzled.

"I haven't run into anything major. I don't really know what kind of change you mean, but... there is something that's been bothering me."

Bothering her?

So that's why the number above her head changed.

Hiro raised an eyebrow.

"If you don't mind, want to talk about it?"

"Hiro, isn't that a bit inappropriate?" Asuna hesitated softly, trying to stop him.

She clearly felt it wasn't right to pry into someone's wounds.

"It's fine." Eto waved it off casually.

"I've already accepted it."

"About half a month ago, when I was wandering around, I ran into a guy named Arima Kishou. We had a bit of a conflict."

"I fought him. And in the end, I lost."

Fought?

Asuna's expression turned awkward.

So... she's a delinquent?

Should she tell Mikan?

What if Mikan got influenced badly?

After hearing the full explanation, Hiro nodded.

Now it made sense.

Eto Yoshimura-the One-Eyed King, a half-ghoul-had been defeated by Arima Kishou, the half-human "new One-Eyed King."

So her loss had been absorbed by Arima.

While Hiro and Asuna continued talking with Eto Yoshimura, twilight settled over the city.

Yuuki Kyouko and Sugou Nobuyuki left Anteiku and drove off in their private car.

"Sugou, don't be angry." Yuuki Kyouko spoke softly, apologetic.

"Asuna is a bit ignorant. I'll talk to your Uncle Shouzou and persuade her. Just wait a little longer."

"I understand, Kyouko-obasan." Sugou smiled faintly.

"I'm still young. Waiting a few more years isn't a problem."

Then-

Bang!

A black-and-red cylindrical object, coiled like a python, pierced straight through the front bulletproof glass.

It didn't slow down.

It went cleanly through Sugou Nobuyuki's brain.

Then vanished.

Thump-

With the screech of tires, red-and-white viscous liquid splattered onto Yuuki Kyouko's stunned face.

Bang!

Another explosive sound.

The black-and-red object flashed past again.

Crash-!

The car, now driverless, slammed straight into the building ahead.

Yuuki Kyouko felt a sharp pain in her head.

Then everything went dark.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

"Fainted already?" A masked ghoul approached the wreck and glanced inside.

"How useless."

He dragged the two male corpses out of the car.

Then began to feed.
