Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Dumbledore the Old Father

Magic cannot be controlled, but emotions can.

Looking at Adelaide, who was devouring chocolate ice cream in front of him, Dumbledore sighed in his heart more than once: this girl's monstrous talent was something even he and Gellert felt inferior to.

A four-year-old child had actually learned to stabilize her own emotions within a year!

Adelaide had been in Britain for nearly a year, and during this time, there hadn't been another magic riot; her emotions were more stable than many teenagers.

Alas, it seemed Adelaide was destined not to be in Gryffindor. Dumbledore now only hoped she wouldn't end up in Slytherin.

What Dumbledore didn't know was that Adelaide's four-year-old body held a mature soul of nearly thirty. Combined with mental strength far exceeding ordinary people brought by her transmigration, she normally wouldn't trigger a magic riot at all. The previous riots had been forced out by mathematics and bratty kids.

Taking advantage of the gap after Adelaide finished her ice cream and moved on to the sweet buns, Dumbledore said as if casually:

"While Young Wizards from established British wizarding families receive their literacy education at home before age eleven, considering you've lived in a Muggle family before, I've handled the enrollment procedures for a private primary school in London to help you adapt to the British environment as quickly as possible."

Adelaide raised an eyebrow and put down the handkerchief she used to wipe her mouth.

She had been in Britain for a year; did she still need to adapt to the environment?

She didn't want to go to school with a bunch of noisy brats!

Adelaide refused righteously, "I think I've already adapted to the environment in Britain. Besides, Bru has taught me to read and write English. I don't need to attend primary school."

Dumbledore sighed helplessly. If Adelaide had truly adapted to the environment in Britain, he wouldn't have had to go to such great lengths.

His initial idea was to let Adelaide make a few friends of the same age from White Wizard families. To this end, he hadn't hesitated to spend a large sum of money to renovate the old house in Godrics Hollow.

After all, this was considered the largest semi-Wizard settlement in Britain. There were plenty of children around Adelaide's age with all sorts of personalities, allowing her to pick her friends freely.

Since Dumbledore was usually busy with official duties, he also arranged for an experienced House-elf, Bru, to take care of her daily life.

In Dumbledore's plan, it wouldn't take more than a few years for Adelaide to form her own bonds in Godrics Hollow.

But the other's degree of reclusiveness far exceeded Dumbledore's imagination.

In a year, the number of times she left the house could be counted on one hand!

The first time Adelaide went out was during the Christmas holidays.

Having been busy for several months, Dumbledore returned to the valley and asked the House-elf about Adelaide's recent situation. He was told she had been staying home watching TV and reading comic books, not going out to play at all.

Dumbledore felt this couldn't go on, but he couldn't force the child to go out either, as that would only have the opposite effect. He had to take it step by step.

He found Adelaide and said kindly that he wanted to take her out to play during the holiday, asking where she wanted to go.

Adelaide didn't refuse Dumbledore's kindness and requested that he take her to visit Blenheim Palace.

Everything was perfect at first, until they were walking in High Park and Adelaide was unfortunately hit on the head by a branch from a strange old oak tree.

Although it only took Dumbledore two seconds to heal the small wound on Adelaide's forehead, she still insisted she had a concussion from being hit by the branch and needed to rest at home.

She even brought the culprit home on the grounds that'such a straight branch is rarely seen.'

Adelaide's 'rest' lasted until the summer vacation.

As a 24k pure homebody, if you wanted her to go out and run around with those Little Brats in diapers, it was simply a dream.

Dumbledore, having finished his school affairs for the summer, returned to the valley again only to find that Adelaide's progress in making friends was still zero. He was starting to lose his composure.

Is there something wrong with my educational philosophy?

Dumbledore began to doubt his life choices.

Is being a guardian in this world really this difficult?

If Gellert and I had a child... Dumbledore shook his head, pulling his thoughts back to Adelaide. He planned to have a heart-to-heart talk between a guardian and a child.

He wanted to ask Adelaide what exactly it would take for her to be willing to go out and make more friends.

Adelaide was prepared for this. She claimed she was unwilling to go out because she was shy, and hoped Dumbledore would let her start by getting close to animals, slowly gathering the courage to face strangers.

Of course, this was a lie.

Adelaide's true purpose was only to get close to that Phoenix named Fawkes.

Dumbledore stroked his beard, thinking Adelaide's words made sense.

If starting with animals... the clever and gentle Fawkes was the perfect choice.

That afternoon, Fawkes appeared in Godrics Hollow.

The effect was very significant; Adelaide quickly became familiar with Fawkes through various snacks.

For the first few days, Adelaide pestered Dumbledore every day after breakfast to cast Transfiguration on Fawkes to turn him into a Scarlet Macaw, then the person and bird would go out and play happily in the valley.

Dumbledore felt he could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Everything was on the right track—

Until half a month ago.

Adelaide maxed out Fawkes's favorability, and he gave her one of his tail feathers.

With her goal achieved, Adelaide returned to her homebody life.

She even brought Fawkes along in her laziness. After breakfast, she would nestle on the sofa, holding Fawkes and feeding him snacks while watching BBC animal documentaries.

After ten days, Fawkes had gained several rounds of weight.

Dumbledore felt that if this continued, Fawkes might turn into a fat ground chicken.

Most importantly, Hogwarts was about to start. Fawkes had many uses, and Dumbledore couldn't leave him at home. Wouldn't Adelaide just return to her previous homebody state then... This wouldn't do!

He began to invite old friends to bring their granddaughters and great-granddaughters over as guests, but Adelaide acted indifferent to these children of her age, making it impossible to make friends effectively.

The old father Dumbledore fell into sorrow once again.

He thought it over and finally could only think of sending Adelaide to a Muggle primary school. At least this would force her to have more contact with peers.

If Adelaide could make a few Muggle friends, Dumbledore wouldn't have to fear her following the old paths of Gellert and Lord Voldemort in the future.

The idea was beautiful, but the actual operation wasn't that simple.

Enrollment procedures and such were minor matters in his eyes. The difficulty was that the private primary school he had carefully selected was located in London.

To have Adelaide move to central London, just one House-elf like Bru wouldn't be enough.

Dumbledore had to find at least one reliable adult to take care of Adelaide on the surface.

Just as Dumbledore was worrying about the candidate, another unexpected event occurred.
